love watching Tim while Dr. P speaks mostly off camera. a fun game might be attributing thought bubbles to him….”I’m glad I wore the purple shirt today, it makes me look more relatable.”

How much do the top Republican staffers in the legislature get paid. I read about the Democratic staffers pay last week.
Comment by Tom Joad Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:14 am
LOL now we have Dr. P watching as Tim speaks.

Tom -
It looks as though Dave Gross (Senate Dem chief of staff) makes about $60,000 or so more than Phil Draves (Senate GOP chief of staff). The compensation for the top Senate Dem and Senate GOP communications staffers is about a push. Patti Schuh makes more than Rikeesha Phelon but John Patterson makes more than Amy Barry. I’m going strictly off the Ledger on Comptroller Munger’s website.

Hope they treat her with courtesy and respect. This isn’t her problem.
Comment by walker Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:22 am
Gee, Purvis answered the question without an insult. Give her brownie points.
Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:22 am
I’m guessing Purvis knows the only way to rehab her own is image is if she does it herself.
After all the heat she’s taken, going snarky keeps the heat on her.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:25 am
Durkin uses the it’s been done before. So the Blagoesque end business as usual pledge by Rauner is false.
Also, we’re all looking forward to the sham statement from the Governor’s office that they are not spending as much in the Governor’s office budget.
Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:26 am
Purvis is the walking, breathing contradiction of what Rauber says, and how Rauner does.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:28 am
The Chicago Sun Times ran a series in 2013 detailing the deaths of dozens of children under the care of Pat Quinn’s DCFS and this committee did not hold a hearing or take any other constructive action to remedy that horrible problem. This is disgusting.
Comment by Just Swell Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:36 am
I have direct experience working with Purvis in her new role. While we may disagree regarding some philosophical issues I have found her to be intelligent, thoughtful, and a good listener. All in all a quality professiona.
I say that with the acknowledgement that I was not supportive of the hire. That may have a s much to do with how the governor presented her as anything else.
The issue she is addressing is not of her doing and some have commented that if her image is to be rehabed she is the one to do it. I think that is spot on, and she is very capable of doing so I might add.
Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:43 am
Nuding is a class act. One of the truly superstar staffers. Purvis is hold up well.

What childhood education programs are at DHS? The maternal and childhood health programs have been transferred from DHS to DPH.

Nuding is one of the good ones, period. Rauner’s Crew should be glad they have him.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:47 am
I don’t understand why she makes more than the directors of ISBE or IBHE when she has far less responsibility?

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 11:57 am
In observing how professional and competent Mr. Nuding and Ms. Purvis are, I am really starting to think there are two camps within the Governor’s staff. On one side are the substantive professionals, who, by and large, seem to go about their business in a dignified, competent way. The other side seems to be more interested in antagonizing Democratic legislators and seeing their names on Twitter. I’m not sure who carries more sway, but it does seem like the State would be better served by more staffers following the example of Mr. Nuding and Ms. Purvis rather than what we saw in this committee last week.

Feigenholtz says she ==didn’t think sexism was something we should be talking about in this committee, it was a little off topic==
Then she follows by calling budget cuts ==the biggest act of sexism==.
What a joke.

So listening to Purvis, did she just say I haven’t recommended any changes. I mean you have been here 17 weeks and you aren’t familiar. I thought you were a Supa star

Can’t help but think that if Nuding had Purvis appeared last week, there would have been no hearing called this week. They are very effective in responding to the Dems’ baited questions.
Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:04 pm
- Norseman -, your running commentary has be insightful and helpful. Thanks.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:08 pm
I have to say this has been a very substantive discussion. A shame we couldn’t have that last week and were instead treated to the juvenile snark of Mr Goldberg.
Taking this route the first time would have been much better for the Governor
Comment by ILPundit Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:16 pm
With the right to disagree with any future policy position, I felt that Purvis deserved her superstar staffer status TODAY. Tim Nuding was already there. Today, the embarrassing presentations came from the members of the committee.
Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:42 pm
Norseman - second. Purvis impressed, unlike the committee.
Comment by Formerly Known As... Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:46 pm
Young Mr. Zach Bernard put it very succinctly in his tweet:
“That was cordial and substantive. Impressive display of civility between both sides compared to last week.”

Two sidebars:
Rep. Gabel’s “questioning” was…interesting. Federal and state contract standards are very different animals.
Director Nuding shows what happens when you combine skill with experience. That is not to take away from Mr. Goldberg’s intelligence or abilities, but Director Nuding clearly exemplified professionalism.
Comment by Team Sleep Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:50 pm
Purvis, today, was top notch and was able to rehab herself very well.
Nuding, the cannoli offer stands. Well done.
So much would have been avoided if these two, last week…
Ugh.

=== Rep. Gabel’s “questioning” was…interesting. Federal and state contract standards are very different animals. ===
Gabel did not impress. She and a couple of other Dem solons were trying to pin Purvis down on reports so they could try to access such reports in the future via FOIA … Clearly, she reports to the Gov and they do not want nor should they want to provide access to confidential policy papers.
Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 12:54 pm
Why didn’t anyone ask Purvis how she felt now knowing she was being paid out of DHS budget? Why didn’t anyone ask to see a copy of her contract? Why didn’t anyone ask if she had met with anyone from DHS involved in early childhood education/related programs? Confused.
Comment by Anon Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 1:11 pm
Anon @ 1:11, did you even listen to the hearing? Even in the brief time I was able to, I heard all your “questions” addressed in one form or another.
Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 1:34 pm
Gee, the governor’s office sent over some grown ups. Made the administration look all reasonable and responsible. How hard was that?
Tne frat boys aren’t doing him any favors.
Comment by Wordslinger Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 1:49 pm
Word - my thoughts exactly.
I really wish that Governor Rauner had hired a former or current GOP legislator to by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Legislative Affairs.
Again - this is nothing personal against Mr. Goldberg. But that would have gone a long way to smoothing over relations with the General Assembly as a whole.
I was not a huge fan of how Senator Lightford “conversed” with Mr. Goldberg during the hearing on May 29th, but she is still the elected official and he is not.
Comment by Team Sleep Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 1:54 pm
Word and Team Sleep - I agree with your comments. I recognize the need to make changes in Springfield. While I side with the Dems, I won’t dismiss approaches proposed by Rauner. However, all the adolescent snarky comments are making me dismiss Rauner completely.
Comment by Chicago Guy Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 2:25 pm
It was totally unclear what if any deliverables Sec Purvis was required to provide to the Governor over any period of time. I think Rep Will Davis tried to get to that several times and there was no real answer.

It was up to her chairman to cool her jets. He didn’t. No one does. That doesn’t mean the Admin (whoever is representing it) needs to sit still like a potted plant and let her spew her venom. She’s an embarrassment to the GA, and hardly the only one. And yes, it’s a bi-partisan club.
Comment by A guy Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 3:03 pm
Anonymous @ 1:34. So how did Sec Purvis feel about her pay being deducted out of DHS budget? Did they present a copy of her contract to the Committee members? Whom did she meet with at DHS? Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to be within the confines of the hearing so I had to catch what I could but after speaking to individuals whom were in the hearing these questions seemed to go unanswered. they may of touched on these subjects but in reality I didn’t hear any straight forward answers. Thank you.

Anon - Rich provided a video link of the meeting at the top of this article.
Comment by Mama Tuesday, Jun 9, 15 @ 7:08 pm
C’mon, Guy. Kim Lightford is not an embarrassment to the GA. At some point hyperbole becomes absurdity. Goldberg more than held his own, so did she, and the chair stepped in before it went too far. He leaned on Goldberg, but that’s understandable, he was defending his committee member. Put the same events in a different forum, you’d likely get the same result, but perhaps with the blame allocated differently.

By the way, Scott, I never heard of them being called a ghost payroller by anybody inside government. “Ghost payroller” is a pejorative and identifies someone who holds a paying position but doesn’t report to work. I doubt that there are any of those left in Illinois state government, but I guess you never know
