Last and final warning

Posted in:

* Hyperpartisan Democrats have been occasionally suggesting in comments that Gov. Rauner be recalled by voters. We’ve had even more today, so I feel I need to “front page” this topic.

Like all hyperpartisans, these recall enthusiasts are clueless.

* From the Illinois Constitution, with emphasis added

The recall of the Governor may be proposed by a petition signed by a number of electors equal in number to at least 15% of the total votes cast for Governor in the preceding gubernatorial election, with at least 100 signatures from each of at least 25 separate counties.

15 percent of 3,627,690 total votes cast last year would be 544,154 signatures. That’s a whole lot, not to mention the 25 county requirement.

* But before you can even pass a petition you’ll need an affidavit

A petition shall have been signed by the petitioning electors not more than 150 days after an affidavit has been filed with the State Board of Elections providing notice of intent to circulate a petition to recall the Governor. The affidavit may be filed no sooner than 6 months after the beginning of the Governor’s term of office. The affidavit shall have been signed by the proponent of the recall petition, at least 20 members of the House of Representatives, and at least 10 members of the Senate, with no more than half of the signatures of members of each chamber from the same established political party.

Can anybody out there name 10 House Republicans and 5 Senate Republicans who would sign such an affidavit?

Ain’t. Gonna. Happen.

* Don’t clog up our comment section here with your goofy recall rants. You’ll be banned for life and forced to flee to a newspaper website, where nobody cares.

That is all.

  4. I have two words for those who think Rauner should be recalled or impeached:

    Evelyn Sanguinetti.

My personal hope is that neither Madigan nor Cullerton get so tough on him that he decides to quit mid-term.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:40 pm

  5. LOL, ryan!

Actually “impeach” is a banned word here. I had to manually approve your comment (and 47th’s above). So, no door was left open.

“Recall” isn’t an easy word to ban because it’s so often used in other contexts. Too much work freeing up too many comments from the holding pen.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:40 pm

  6. The amendment relating to recall of the governor was written in such a way that Illinois can say we have a procedure to recall the governor. That’s the theory. The practice is the way it was written is that it will never happen. If that many members of the GA would sign the affidavit that governor is probably going to get impeached before the voters get a shot at recall.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:42 pm

  7. Agree Rich, I’ve told people before who have brought this up that things are going to have to get a whole lot worse than they are now before you can get the required number of GOP signatures to get a recall. These Democrats need to take a deep breath.

Comment by The Dude Abides Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:43 pm

  8. what are the banned words - is there a link?

Comment by zonz Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:44 pm

  9. Also irrational, as the Dems should be just thrilled that the evil mogul Rauner’s there. Did they want to take all the blame for a resolution of the state’s budget mess. Cuts and tax increases-no matter what percentage of which, that’s going to generate some, er, resentment on the part of voters. Nice to have an evil mogul there to take at least some of the blame for the pain.

Comment by Cassandra Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:45 pm

  10. lol, Slip and Sue, the insurance policy.

My fear is that Gov. Rauner will be a prolific fundraising bundler for the GOP Nominee that if the Republican does win, a Cabinet spot is offered, or even sweeter for a retired multi-millionaire, be offered an Ambassadorship (*cough* paid vacation) to some incredible country with no worry of actual work (Switzerland for one).

Then, like the hedge funder he is, Rsuber cuts his loses, gets a new title, and we get…

    Oh, man…

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jun 19, 15 @ 1:47 pm

  11. Sorry about using a banned word. Wasn’t applying it to any particular person, just in general. Didn’t mean to be a nope.

  20. ==with no more than half of the signatures of members of each chamber from the same established political party==

So if the GOP membership sinks much lower in either chamber, the chances of recall will fall from “winning the lottery 5 times in a row” range to “zero.”

  22. Since we are now in permanent campaign mode, if you want a change you should recruit an opposing Gov candidate and start the campaign now. I’m thinking Doc Walls but if you favor another candidate, get them to commit and start campaigning. How much does it cost to issue a press release every day? Seriously.

To all the stuff I’ve posted before
Half of it, a painful bore
I’m glad its off my chest
Oft told, to give it a rest
To all the stuff I’ve posted before

To all the crap I once believed
I’ll just confess, I’d been deceived
I thought I knew the truth
But it was just my youth
To all the crap I once believed

The winds of change in this windy state
Sometimes blows hot and full of hate
You’d think that Chicago was used to it
So I found it odd, when I was told to quit

To all the songs that I enhance
Each Friday when I get a chance
No matter how clever they are
Some say I go too far
But CapFax folks like to dance!

To Rich Miller who cares for us
When we fight, and when we fuss
He’ll always be in our hearts
Even when we tears us apart
We’ve felt his spankings when we’re not smart!

  47. Not to hijack the thread, but the idea of a recall has never sat well with me. We get the leaders we deserve. We get the opportunity to recall a governor every four years. In the event of true malfeasance, there is already a process in place to deal with it. One that is arguably much more likely to succeed.

This, here is why I can’t stand that the national political attitudes have invaded Illinois.

An Illinois Rep. was never quite like a national Rep. Conversely, an Illinois Dem. was never quite like a national Dem. MJM is more fiscally conservative than most national R’s. George Ryan got rid of the death penalty.

This tea-party nonsense is destroying Illinois politics. Compromise and horse-trading was an art form in this state forever. Blago broke the rules and he’s gone. Quinn never understood it and he’s gone. I hope Rauner learns real soon how it works, cause he is tearing at the very fabric of what Illinois politics always were.

Hey, I have an idea, let’s be Indiana everybody. No thank you. If I wanted to be irrelevant, I’d move to Indiana. STOP IT PEOPLE!!!
