Back in the day, and don’t ask me how I know this, “Sugaree” was code amongst certain non-violent drug offenders that meant they wouldn’t snitch when/if caught by the fuzz (like I say, it was back in the day). If you got a call from the jailhouse from a friend who said “Sugaree” in the course of conversation, it meant that your name had not and would not pass his lips. Conversely, if you said “Sugaree” during the course of that conversation, it was a coded plea to keep your name out of things. The song, really, was perfect for this:
“When they come to take you down
When they bring that wagon ’round
When they come to call on you
And drag your poor body down
Just one thing I ask of you,
Just one thing for me
Please forget you know my name, my darling Sugaree
Shake it, shake it sugaree,
Just don’t tell them that you know me”

For the full electric treatment of this, pretty much any 1977 rendition is unbelievable, and readily available
