HBO - “Dad’s Home State” - Season 1, Episode 39.
Bruce edits and approves IllinoisGO mailers. Diana edits and approves “Ounce” newsletter. Diana’s state employee tries to stop both mailers. Nuding gives Arduin empty boxes for her office, “ck” looks for Arduin successes for press release. Comedy, 57 minutes.
Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:27 am
I’m sure this is making for strained relations on the home front. But, if Diana is going to remain the head of the Ounce, then she’s got to wear her big girl pants. Her job is to advocate for the populations her agency serves. I believe she has a conflict of interest by remaining the head of that agency.

I would pay money to be a fly on the wall in the Governor’s mansion when the calls start pouring in!!
OW, this would seem to be tailor-made for one of your descriptions of an episode of the ongoing sit-com that is the Governor’s office!

Can the governor rescind the CCAP policy changes, or does the legislature have to rescind the governor’s new policy?

This appears to be an emotional ad to get people to donate money to the Ounce org.. No?
Comment by Mama Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:42 am
Mama- the action item is “Contact Gov. Bruce Rauner today…” (as seen at the end of the Action Alert.) Emotional, yes- but it’s not an ad. It’s a publication that appears to go to subscribers. And, the emotion is well placed.

Rauner: But honey, the kids will be remembered at the country club for their sacrifice to the union busting cause.
Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:47 am
Mama, Rauner’s DHS made the policy changes. In other words, the Governor taketh away, and the Governor can giveth back.
Comment by Linus Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:47 am
Why the assumption that this policy causes a strain in the governor’s personal life? Why not ask whether or not either of the Rauners actually care about what the impact is on the poor? During the election, many people disregarded the campaign spots with the Mrs. Rauner as a cover. This is evidence that they were. Why should this mailer be viewed as anything different?
If he thinks Mrs. Rauner really cares about this, didn’t the Governor bring it up before he approved it? It seems unlikely that an “uncomfortable” discussion is just now taking place in the Rauner home. It either took place weeks ago (and they made a decision and moved forward), or it never did and never will (and they don’t really care).

This is just another attempt by Mike Madigan and the First Ladies he controls to raise taxes and make our economy less competitive…
Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:49 am
Mama: it’s a call-to-action to bombard the governor with phone calls.
To The Post: I’ve heard that staff once keen on Diana Rauner have been chirping about her at the watering holes. Now I think we know why.
That said, is Carville can make it work, so can the governor.
Comment by Juvenal Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:51 am
If Mrs. Rauner can’t even use her special access as First Lady to protect programs such as this why would anyone donate to an organization run by her and expect it to be an effective advocate with this governor?
Comment by hisgirlfriday Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 10:51 am

Stellar.
I earnestly hope that this is having zero repercussions in the Rauners’ personal lives. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, just because we may disagree about politics or religion or philosophy is no reason to not be friends with one another.

You’re asking the wrong question.
The question needing asking is “Ounce” to Mrs. Rauner;
“Can you, or can’t you, help with your husband?”
As “bad” as Diana may look for Bruce, you can make a case Bruce is making Diana seem… ineffective.

To OW’s point:
Board members and CEOs are expected to leverage their personal relationships.
Perhaps board member Ms. Helen Zell could make a few calls…one to her husband, one to ILGO?
Comment by Juvenal Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 11:42 am
I’m still wondering…is there conflict, or is it political cover. “Gosh, I’m doing all I can.”
Comment by Pot calling kettle Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 11:43 am
- Pot calling kettle -,
If it’s just window dressing that the First Lady is ineffective because the Governor won’t fall victim to conflicts, why would “Ounce” … want… to be a “prop” for Gov. Rauner and his integrity?
The point the First Lady wanted to stay shouldn’t be to give my husband “conflict of interest cover at the cost of a group I advocate for… for free.”
The crux of this all is;
Is it worth it for “Ounce”, the Governor, and Mrs. Rauner to dance around the relationships and influences as “Ounce” actually faces real problems from a real Administration?
It’s hubris and ego… and math… all at play.

I just can’t figure how Diana rationalizes her Ounce position statements with accepting a $100,000 / yr chief of staff paid on the state’s dime. Couldn’t that money be put to better use at places like OPF?
For that matter, does anyone know what duties her CoS actually performs?

Yes, the organization “speaks” but the President stays silent. How is it tenable for the Board of Directors to allow her to hide when any other president would have an obligation to speak out? And, if she can’t play an active, visible role at the time of the organization’s greatest need, why is she in that position? Best to go back to smiling and vouching for Bruce in adorable, feel-good TV spots and dreaming of the White House (or at least Naval Observatory).
Comment by Willie Stark Thursday, Aug 27, 15 @ 12:40 pm
From that HBO special- Finally, a frustrated Bruce tells Diana a hard truth he thinks she needs to hear: “Ounce is important, yes,” he says, referring to the Ounce of Prevention Fund, the foundation she runs, “but it doesn’t come close to what we’re trying to accomplish.”

From: Bruce Rauner, Governor
To: All department heads
Subject: Appointments for Friday, August 28, 2015
Governor Bruce Rauner today announced he has appointed Donna Arduin as the new First Lady of the State of Illinois.
“Donna is a superstar and brings a unique set of qualifications and record of great successes in states like Kansas to the office of First Lady,” said Governor Rauner. “Together, we will Turnaround Illinois for job creators and wrest the stranglehold away from Speaker Madigan and the politicians he controls.”
Arduin most recently served as the governor’s budget guru. She replaces Diana Rauner, who has served in the role of First Lady since January 2015. Governor Rauner wishes Diana all the best in her future endeavors. She will continue in her role as Governor Rauner’s wife from a remote hamlet in the Appalachians.
