* I told subscribers about this earlier today…
House Republicans have received a very clear message from their leader over whether to support the override [of the AFSCME “no strike” bill]: “Vote against the governor and there will be consequences,” House minority Republican leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Today’s showdown in Springfield pits Rauner against Madigan like no other battle this year.
“There will be consequences for any of our members who vote against our caucus today,” Durkin said Wednesday. He said “consequences” does not automatically mean expulsion, but they will be discussed among Republican leadership.
“This is my decision. And my decision only,” he said. “I believe this will be cataclysmic if passed.”
Wow.
I’ve never seen anything quite like that before.
The House Republicans have taken caucus positions in the past, but they don’t usually talk about it with the mainstream media, and never this brazenly.
…Adding… As always, keep completely up to date by monitoring our live session coverage post.

===“There will be consequences for any of our members who vote against our caucus today,” Durkin said Wednesday. He said “consequences” does not automatically mean expulsion, but they will be discussed among Republican leadership.===
Kinda makes Speaker Madigan and the legislators he controls seem more like guidelines instead of rules…
I still say Rauner overpaid for the GOP Caucuses.
“This” is what you get for $20 million?
You get “Leader Durkin and the Legislators he controls” being unified… by fear… and retribution… and punishment?
The HGOP Press Shop failed Leader Durkin today;

I’m not sure how I would respond to being publicly threatened by my legislative leadership. Privately threatened is fine — but to do so publicly and make it possible for folks to legitimately accuse me of cowardice?
It might cause me to vote against my leadership out of spite. How dare they publicly assault the dignity of their own members in a last ditch effort to maintain loyalty they clearly don’t deserve.

Comment by The Colossus of Roads Wednesday, Sep 2, 15 @ 1:24 pm
If this passes with the help of a GOP legislator, That individual should start cleaning out their office now. I’m sure AFSCME is promising help with petitions, money and volunteers, but I would take that with a grain of salt. The past eight months they have done nothing to successfully mobilize and promote their cause. They are lucky that the Speaker and themselves have a common enemy. Not to mention very different reasons why they have a mutual enemy who goes by the name of Bruce Rauner.

Seems Poe will have greater chance of re-election by voting against Brucie than w/ him. His constituents will carry him on their shoulders and no one will challenge him for the Dem’s, so the cross-over in the primary, where the battle will be has great potential to trash any puppet opponent.

Durkin has repeatedly stated that an override is a bad vote. That didn’t just come up today. Perhaps stating it as clearly (brazenly?) to the media on the record is more unusual.
As for the Dem side and caucus votes…they have a well oiled system for dispensing advice and discipline and have for years. It doesn’t reflect as directly back on the Speaker, but no one is confused where the official word comes from and how to proceed. To think otherwise is to be willfully compliant in ignorance.
Leader Durkin isn’t carrying the water for anyone with his position on the override. He may be carrying the water on strongly encouraging his caucus to remain united on this vote.
Does anyone get credit for being courageous on the Heroin bill override?

Comment by Slippin' Jimmy Wednesday, Sep 2, 15 @ 1:58 pm
For a long time I’ve heard GOP guys on here complaining about Madigan being heavy fisted but I’ve never heard anything as bad as what Durkin is doing. Democracy in action, if you vote with your constituents you are in trouble, you vote how I tell you too. Poe said yesterday that he’s received by far more phone calls on this bill than any bill since he’s been there. The calls were running 75-80% in favor of the override. Will Poe go with his constituents or the Governor? As someone previously mentioned, there must be a few GOP members considering voting for the override for Durkin to make such a threat. This is obviously a moment of desperation for Durkin, and the man who controls him, the Governor.

While Madigan has said he has the votes necessary, one key Democrat, Rep. Ken Dunkin, is “unavailable,” according to his office. YES
If a GOP member votes against Rauner’s wishes, but is voting for the district, should that member be worried?
SUBJECTIVE, DEPENDING ON THE DISTRICT AND HOW MUCH WE KNOW. IS THERE A SINGLE DISTRICT WHERE PUBLIC EMPLOYEES COMPRISE THE MAJORITY OF VOTERS IN THE DISTRICT? AND…
ARE YOU WILLING TO SUGGEST THE SAME TO ALL OF THOSE COURAGEOUS DEMOCRATS WHO ARE VOTING OUT OF STEP WITH THEIR DISTRICT? WILL WE BE SEEING 68,69, 70 OR 71 DEMOCRATIC VOTES ON THIS BILL? DOES THAT NOT DEMONSTRATE SOME PARTY DISCIPLINE? OR ARE THEY JUST ALL OF ONE MIND ON THIS? THE 2 OR 3 WHO MAY VOTE THEIR DISTRICTS, OR THEIR OWN CONSCIENCE, OR NOT VOTE, DO THEY LACK COURAGE? DON’T THESE APPLICATIONS GO BOTH WAYS?
Rauner owns the GOP GA Caucuses. The stress on Durkin isn’t from his own beliefs, but what Rauner demands.
THEN LEADER DURKIN (WHO YOU ADMIRE, AT LEAST YOU’VE SAID SO) IS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH?

Why even have a representative if they aren’t going to vote on behalf of their constituents? How are their voices being heard? That goes for any piece of legislation that affects them, not just SB 1229.
If you’re healthy and not showing up to vote you should be banned from the job. It defeats the purpose of having an elected representative. Can we all just not show up for a week because some awful job assignments await? This is a travesty.

Is this what they mean by democracy? Who does Durkin think he is? This guy is not only “out of control” but he has to go. Oh, before you complain, I am a Republican from downstate and am fed up with the “holier than God” attitude of the Governor and the ENTIRE General Assembly. You are one hell of a man, Durkin, and I bet your friends and family are certainly PROUD of you. Oh, I forgot……you don’t care. I hope your voters care more than your usual SELF.
