So candidate Rauner, back in 2012, you sketched out a plan that would have social service spending be held up as a way to prod Democrats to back your plans to weaken government labor unions like SEIU and AFSCME. But Gov. Rauner, didn’t just this week you say it was Democrats who were pressuring you on the budget?
GOV. RAUNER: “They want that kind of pressure. I believe that’s what they’re doing now. They want the pressure of no scholarships for kids. They want the pressure of no childcare as a way to push the process. That’s the only explanation I can give.”
Candidate Rauner?
CANDIDATE RAUNER: “I think we can drive a wedge issue in the Democratic Party on that topic.”

Gov. Rauner, “Candidate Rauner is a sham, but he makes some good points… ”

My change in position is because of Madigan, and the neurons he controls.
Comment by Keyrock Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 2:41 pm
The dirty secret — and not many people will say this, much less agree with it — is that Rauner does not have any kind of mandate.
For every person that voted for him, there was someone who voted for Quinn.
Rauner won, yes — but not by much.
Madigan won, too. As did Cullerton.
I’m not sure Rauner understands that there’s a lot — a lot — of folks that didn’t vote for him.
He’s acting like everybody likes what he’s doing. I suspect hardly anyone likes what he’s doing.

Now we know what he means by “turnaround.” He is turning around from everything he said during his campaign.

Excellent work by Mr. Mackey.
But this piece just conjures up old “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” lines about mendacity for me. Ain’t nothin’ more powerful than the odor of mendacity.

Comment by Anon221 Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 2:54 pm
All you really needed to do was see that Bruce Rauner, candidate created the caricature he felt woukd be “enough” to beat Pat Quinn.
Rauner was an empty vessel, and the media “never asked”, and now that empty vessel is shed like a butterfly leaving a cocoon, and be the different animal before the real animal emerged.
Reality?
Real Rauner begat Caricature Rauner which was abandoned for Real Rauner as soon as Governor Rauner was sworn in.
You can say, now, the only phony in the 2014 Governor’s Race ended up being… Bruce Rauner.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 2:56 pm
FKA- If you listened to the piece, you would have heard the entire quote you posted. I didn’t hear any “cherry picking” on Mr. Mackey’s part.
Comment by Anon221 Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 2:56 pm
I have advocated for some time that the Governor’s adversaries should more often use his own words against him. This is a pretty powerful demonstration of how effective that strategy could be.
Comment by The Captain Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 3:02 pm
The other dirty secret about Governor Rauner not having a mandate…
Those that did vote for him had no idea this is what he meant by “shakin up Springfield” because it was never part of Candidate Rauner’s widely circulated and over-simplistic public narrative.
No mandate claimable on a 50.3% win based on very manipulated messaging.

Joe M is right. I’m not certain that myself or any other hostages will be saved even if the GA agrees to the entire current TAR. I think the bar just gets raised higher.

@Anon221 - thanks. I just listened to the piece. It is clear that Brian edited and shortened that as ==the last word from our debaters==. It is the same statement, edited from the earlier quote.

Paraphrasing Candidate Rauner: “I don’t have a social agenda, just a budget agenda.”
Paraphrasing Gov Rauner: “I will not talk about the budget until you approve my reforms.”
Look, I get that the Governor considers his turnaround agenda to be a financial/budget issue, but it’s very easy to see why some could argue that it’s at most indirectly related to the state’s finances, especially in short term. Based on the cryptic nature of candidate Rauner’s plans, the idea that Gov Rauner has a mandate is pretty silly.

There’s only a budget connection if, as many claim, the Turnaround Agenda leads to pretty sizable pay cuts. No wonder Rauner wants to bob and weave on that.

Rauner gave them what they wanted with his drastic cuts to higher education and child care? How nice of him to help the Democrats push the process!

Was Rauner in fact a “Candidate” when he made that second comment? I thought he declared in 2013, not 2012.
Comment by LarryT Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 4:13 pm
Rauner gave no specifics during his campaign. That was the plan.
And now he wants us to think he ran and won on this stuff?
Baloney.

The Governor’s harmful mendacity is downright creepy.
Comment by Qui Tam Wednesday, Oct 28, 15 @ 4:32 pm
This is so fascinating. I appreciate it as I am so very tired of the Governor presenting himself as a victim in all of this. Especially his comments like: They want no child care. WHO cut the child care eligibility, Gov? It was not the GA. It was you who did that and who put that in play. It wasn’t in play before. Argh. So frustrating. And we all feel so impotent.

As we all discovered back when Rauner said he wasn’t going to make cuts and then did cut some autistic funding, telling the truth is not one of one of his strong suits.

Not so shocked that a politician said one thing in a campaign, and another after election. Am concerned with Rauner’s inability to take any heat.

One point I would have liked to see Mackey make: Governor Rauner, you said that there is a conflict of interest between Unions and politicians. What about your $20 million war chest? Isn’t that the same thing?
Comment by Runaground Agenda Thursday, Oct 29, 15 @ 6:21 am
Rauner is driving a wedge between himself and favorable polling numbers.
I wonder if there will come a time in the future when legislators will have less to fear about Rauner’s money because of his unpopularity, assuming his numbers will remain low or get lower.
Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Oct 29, 15 @ 7:00 am
Gov. Rauner please create a good business climate by eliminating the structural deficit, making sure the budget has solid real spending controls, running the state well by making sure experts in their fields are running the agencies and next election make your case in the legislative races that to do more in the area of non budget reforms I need more republicans.

To Rauner public employee pensions were financial tumors destroying America, except for when his firm managed them and he said it was great for employees and taxpayers.
