The city of Chicago plans to release the police video of the Laquan McDonald shooting Tuesday afternoon, coinciding with a 4:30 p.m. news conference at Chicago Police Department headquarters, according to sources familiar with the decision.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy will hold the news conference but the video is expected to be released after their remarks.
I’m figuring that WGN will be carrying it live, so click here at the appropriate time.
…Adding… Oy…
The Chicago Police Department has ordered most of its force into uniform and warned them of potentially longer hours and canceled days off as the city prepares to release a video of Officer Jason Van Dyke fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
The plan is not unprecedented, and similar plans have been made in the past when the department expects massive protests or potential for civil unrest.

Why are they advancing the release of this video so it is timed just before sun set tonight instead of after sun rise tomorrow?

FKA, word is that a TV station got ahold of a copy and was planning to air.

What about CPS? Is there school tomorrow?

Rich–understood, but the city should have asked for them to wait for the morning. The McCulloch presser in the evening was horrible timing in Ferguson.
On the up side, it’s fairly cold.

Comment by Sad Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 5:15 pm
Hard to believe a lot of what they’re saying when the cop remained on the payroll for more than a year–no reason the investigation couldn’t have been wrapped up much sooner–and they barred from the press conference the journalist who sued to get the video into the public domain. And the chief says he would have preferred that the video not be released until whatever process he thinks should happen has concluded.
Nothing has changed. How do you spell “secret?” C-h-i-c-a-g-o p-o-l-i-c-e.

Peace to the family of Laquan. they did not want the video released and this must add to their pain. but they should take comfort in knowing that the release of the video will lead to justice and to changes in procedures. may they have some time over this Thanksgiving to share happy memories even as they continue to grieve.

Comment by Zoe Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 6:26 pm
The main problem is that people don’t have trust in the testimony of the officers and for good reason. Here is likely another occasion of 1) what did the official report say - presumably corroborated by other officers at the scene and 2) what did the video show happened? It brings me back to the little blond bartender assaulted by an off duty police officer. Trust can only be rebuilt by a real effort to get the few bad officers off the street. McCarthy can start his “babysitting” by using the database of complaints to identify problem officers. And the police union can stop supporting officers who have obviously not performed their jobs up to standards.
Comment by NoGifts Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 6:35 pm
Is the shooter charged now only because the video was being released? This was clear - how does it take a year to charge him? He should have been charged months ago.

Should this be considered conspiracy? Emanuel is playing politics and is pretending this is all news, he’s part of the problem here.

Alvarez needs to resign asap. She’s either incompetent or lacks the spine to stand up to the ‘powers that be’. But probably both. Get her out of here.
Rahm has gots to go too. The press conference was an absolute disaster and then to go light a Christmas tree afterwards? What was he thinking? How can we trust a single word out of his mouth after all these lies? And sitting on this tape was the kicker… horrendous “leadership”.
Comment by From the 'Dale to HP Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 7:30 pm
And another thing…the times when people are killed is sad. It is the tip of the iceberg - how about people getting “roughed up” and not killed? Way more frequent and also corrosive to relations with the citizens. We pay police to maintain a professional comportment- no matter how bad the person on the other end of the interaction acts or how bad their day was. Like every other profession. That is a part of the job. Maybe the most important part of the job.

Colin normally I would not respond
To those who can only use name calling as a response but in this case I’ll bite.
Point is this when there is a brutally horrible crime committed why does the race of the offender and victim matter.
A white police officer kills a black teen a black teen allegedly kills a white women they are both incredibly horrific crimes
The victims in both cases deserve justice through the legal system. What they don’t deserve is a mob mentality fueled by community activists with there own agenda, politicians whose only agenda is their next election, the media who lord only knows what their agenda is, and pin head Bloggers …
True equality is when victims are looked upon as victims and offenders as offenders regardless of there race
Point being we don’t see riots in Indianapolis after a horrific crime nor should we see riots in chicago after a horrific crime
Try and open up your mind to that thought before going to name calling

Realy, the difference is that in one case you have a criminal killing a person. In the other, you have decades of institutional racism allowing an officer of the law wantonly killing a person on the basis of a whim, who was then protected from any consequences for over a year.
If these things look the same to you, I do not know what to say.
Comment by Groundhog Day Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 8:35 pm
Really, let me be the first to say, ‘harrumph, harrumph.”
Is it your contention that there is “true equality” in the real-life experience of say, black males with the police, and other groups in society with the police?
Would different experiences perhaps evoke different reactions?
Who are these community activists fueling that mob mentality you speak of? Any names of those activists? What “mob mentality” are you witnessing? Walking down the street blocking cars? They don’t make mobs like they used to.
You made a bad joke in poor taste and now are trying to shine it up like the “I have a dream speech.”
Unlike most elements of this horrible story, you are completely transparent.

We’d all prefer you not respond. Your convoluted thoughts aren’t needed. This kid was savagely murdered by a policeman, and that policeman was only charged over a year later when a judge ruled the video had to be released as a public record. That’s this story, your extraneous references have no place in this story.

Things look bad, but let’s all remember the innocent until proven guilty thing. Lincoln Lad, pretty sure of yourself,eh? Lots of that went down in Ferguson, but the legal system, however or whatever you think of it, didn’t agree with public opinion. Not sticking up for bad cops, but gotta give everyone a fair trial. A trial, I might add, this poor kid never had a chance to get.
Comment by Blue dog dem Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 9:41 pm
Overzealous cop kills a kid. Empties the clip into a lifeless body in the street. Authority at all levels goes into damage control. Cops rush in and scrub the Burger King camera footage. Audio on the dash cam video disappears. Everybody keeps the video bottled up. No charges filed. Until public pressure makes it happen. Ain’t the City grand?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 9:59 pm
Blue Dog Dem- you are completely ignoring the reality that in this case the justice system only decided to even bring this police officer under its watchful eye because a video of said officer pumping 16 rounds of lead into the body of a minor was being released publicly. Is Van Dyke going to get his due process? Yes. And he should.
But he made the decision to execute a 17 year old wielding a knife for no other reason than he could. Where is the due process in that?
Comment by Juice Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 10:38 pm
– Media won’t be happy until they start a riot.–
The “media” has been spoon-fed on this story by authorities for weeks, after they were oblivious to it for months, in order to soften the blow of the inevitable court order to release the video.
It would be swell if the media would now play 13 months of catch-up with some independent reporting.
The official story and timeline are ludicrous. Shooting in October. $5 million settlement — no lawsuit filed — to the City Council in April, five days after Emanuel’s re-election. Charges in November only after judge’s order on video release. The cop still on the payroll all this time. And no word on the cops who went into the Burger King.
Like Liz said, the only one with any credibility to date is the Burger King manager.
The spin out of City Hall, the State’s Attorney office and CPD stinks to high heaven.
Obviously, it’s on the Justice Department now to sort all this out.
Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Nov 24, 15 @ 11:33 pm

Still Waters, you are off on one of your election schedules. we are in the midst of a campaign for State’s Attorney right now. the murder was being investigated, both by the SAO and the USAttorney’s Office, never mind the 2 City authorities investigating the police involved. this is not as simple as watch the video and charge the state case. there are federal issues involved, including what the other police were doing, video care, etc.
