Tyrrell out at CMS

Posted in:

* Until a year ago, Tyrell, 62, was the COO of Rahm Emanuel’s public school system…

Governor Bruce Rauner today announced today the Central Management Services Director Tom Tyrrell will be transitioning out of state government.

Governor Rauner has designated Mike Hoffman as the Acting Director of CMS. Hoffman is the current Chief Operating Officer of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).

  1. Another “superstar” gone within 1 year. The Governor is making it untenable for his superstar leaders to run their agencies. This adminstration is a total disaster.

Why aren’t there more comparisons to Blago? Feels a lot like it. Gridlock. Incompetence. Focus on unachievable goals.

  2. It’s “Tyrrell”.

  3. I actually miss the calm, measured approach of Gov. Blagojevich.

  4. CMS Director (who’s in charge of contract negotiations) departs the same day as the administration declares bargaining impasse? Not good for the Superstar scorecard.

    Meh.

  6. So was Tom not on board with impasse, is it fallout from the break with Rahm, or is it some combination?

  7. More interested on if terranova is out. He’s the head of labor relations and the lead negotiator…

  8. ===or is it some combination? ===

It’s likely more that his personality and the governor’s weren’t, um, meshing.

  9. Fair point, Rich. But why hire him in the first place if he wasn’t up to snuff? It wasn’t like the impasse wasn’t reasonably foreseeable. Then he departs suddenly without the usual “pursuing other opportunities, thank you for service” message. Seems like a lot of turnover in one year, especially the first year (which is typically the honeymoon).

But Mike Hoffman was a Marine too, so…

  11. Well Mike it isn’t like we’re doing a lot of Commerce plus this will be a cakewalk, as CMS isn’t exactly on fire either.

    Very first thing I thought.

This “move” is putting into place the person the Governor feels he needs with the changing and evolving way he, the Governor, wants to move forward with the state and the agency.

    “You’re out, Tom.”

  14. Hoffman will do great things at CMS.

  15. Makes me think that the ‘it doesn’t matter what the Gov’s office says to the press’ line in yesterday’s AFSCME letter was probably something said in negotiations. If you’re own team says things publicly like that, how can they represent you?

  16. ‘Your’ team… Sorry

  17. out of touch, Tom was a point person on the CPS school closings, which Rauner had a pretty big hand in behind the scenes. Guessing that’s why he was hired.

  18. -Hoffman will do great things at CMS.-

Which is fine if you definition of great things is not much at all. Please speak to the accomplishments of DCEO? Franks was right, it should be broken up and redistributed to other agencies. But I don’t know if any way that DCEO was successful. Just like Rauner, a whole year wasted.
