President Barack Obama will return to his old stomping grounds Feb. 10 and deliver an address to the Illinois General Assembly.
Obama will talk about “what we can do, together, to build a better politics — one that reflects our better selves,” according to a travel advisory from the White House.
The visit will come nine years after Obama announced his candidacy for president, and amid a historic budget impasse between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the General Assembly.

“I look forward to welcoming President Obama to the State Capitol and hearing him speak about finding common ground between Republicans and Democrats. Despite our political differences, the President and I share a passion for improving education, especially for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, a belief in the benefits of term limits and redistricting reform for restoring good government, and a strong desire to see more economic opportunity for all Illinoisans. I know we can achieve great things for Illinois by having mutual respect for one another and focusing on bipartisan compromise to achieve what’s best for the long-term future of our great state.”

I don’t think the President had anything to do with the failure of Democratic voters to turn out to the polls, and the voters that did turn out to the polls seemed to have no problem approving a super majority in the State Senate and State House.
That’s not what a loss looks like, and I don’t think that Quinn can blame the President of the United States of America for their failure to develop and implement a campaign that could renew confidence in their abilities.
You have to at least recognized that you’re responsible for your own failures to learn from them.

I have been greatly disappointed that Obama has not put his thumb on the scale and helped his home state and city address high youth unemployment and violence. It is almost like he has taken a hands off approach to avoid some kind of negative appearance. But common man we need federal help with jobs, housing, and drugs. Maybe this will be the statrt.

In any event, I think Lincoln’s birthday would be as good a time as any reminding Rauner that labor is prior to and independent of capital, that capital is only the fruit of labor and that labor is the superior of capital and thus deserves higher consideration.

This is an event that should be part of at least 8 grade and up as required watching. Wonder what will happen to Bluestream that day! Hopefully we’ll be able to see Rauner’s expression(s) throughout the address. After Pullman… at least this time he’ll be on the “stage” and not behind the rope.

No he will probably lecture us on increasing wages for the middle class(befor you go crazy, I support at least $15/hr min wage). An area he has been horrible at. Or better yet, maybe he will tell us how great TPP is and how China manipulating its currency is KILLING the American steel industry. From a historical perspective this is a big deal. As far as helping break the stalemate in crafting a much needed budget, which should be our biggest priority, I’m not optimistic. I’m sure almost all of the GOP members of the legislature voted for McCain and Romney. Personally I was a little disappointed too how Obama totally stayed out of Illinois politics these past 8 years. He is very accomplished on the law, having taught constitutional law at Harvard. A couple of years ago, when the legislature and Governor wasted all that time crafting an unconstitutional Pension bill it would have been nice if the president would have at least made a comment suggesting that they were on the wrong course.

I’m not a state employee Rich. Most people in the know are claiming that the pension issue is the biggest fiscal problem we face. We threw away 2 years running a fools errand, that’s all.

The President just recently did mention that redrawing Districts in a logical manner instead of the current gerrymandering would be good for democracy. Folks on here from both sides should give him credit for that.

I did not vote for Obama and I personally consider him the worst president in my adult lifetime (I’m 50-something, and no, I don’t want to get into all the reasons why I feel that way).
That said… I agree with Rich. It’s still an historic occasion and I feel you have to respect the office whether you like or agree with the person holding it, or not.

Years from now when his statue adorns our Capitol, he’ll be remembered as one of the greatest leaders Illinois has produced. Not quite Lincoln, but clearly deserving of a permanent place of honor and recognition in that beautiful building. This appearance will cement that.
And for those of you petty and small enough to attempt to minimize his presidency because you don’t share his political beliefs, trust me, when your kids see his statue on their field trip to Springfield someday far in the future, they will think your criticism is silly and unbecoming too.
Let’s all try to rise to the occasion and remember who we are: Illinoisans. He’s one of our own, whether we like it or not.

I look forward to this President Obamas visit, and I fear the significance will be lost on individuals too wrapped up in the politics that they’ll miss how important this really is, regardless of what he says or doesn’t say. Still, reflecting on everything happening in Illinois right now, I’m reminded of something candidate Obama said in 2007: “Understand this: If American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain, when I’m in the White House, I’ll put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself. I’ll walk on that picket line with you, as president of the United States of America. Because workers deserve to know that someone’s standing in their corner.”

While the President was still a state rep, he spoke at an AFSCME rally we had at the capital and the importance of collective bargaining.
Since the budget impasse is largely a result of disagreement over collective bargaining, the President may address that issue. i find it a bit ironic that Blagojevich was governor then, but was afraid to address the rally.

Are state employees categorically more self absorbed than, say, hedge fund managers and other big finance types who spend the majority of their time moving money around solely to increase their own stockpiles?

You seem very confused about what happened in IL in 2014.
The Dems didn’t get stomped. They won almost every race - from Frerichs to every targeted state house race to all but one targeted state senate seat.

President Carter addressed the G.A., while a sitting president. The White House used Room 115 as their command center. They were through even putting little pictures of the White House in the center of the phone dialer. Employees, who could not see the president, could view the speech, via close circuit, in Rm 114. I have 8 by 10, black and white photos of President Carter given to me by the House photographer..

February 10th is Ash Wednesday. For Catholics, it begins Lent, the season where we seek forgiveness, and forgive those who are seeking forgiveness. It will be interesting to see if this theme makes it into the speech in any way.

He is a Hawaiian/Illinois president. We should be as proud of him as New Hampshire is of Franklin Pierce, Pennsylvania is of James Buchanan, Vermont is of Chester Arthur and Louisiana is of Zachary Taylor.
If Hillary escapes indictment and gets elected, we’ll have another Illinois hybrid president, an Illinois/Arkansas/New York president.
We should be proud of these historic events!

See how Rauner takes a perfectly decent gubernatorial statement and wrecks it? There is absolutely NO REASON to even mention any political differences. Anyone alive and conscience since 2014 knows that Rauner and Obama have political differences - and it does not need to be said.

DuPage - though I give the President high (if not perfect) marks, I’d have love to have seen President Nixon address the Cali legislature or George W. Bush visit the Texas legislature. He’s the most powerful man on the planet and the most historic figure to come out of Illinois since Lincoln.

Sorry about my first post. All I wanted to say was President Reagan was due to speak one time and the horrible act by a mad man prevented his visit. it was really sad that President Reagan, a native son of state did not address a joint session.

Rich, I am a state employee and find that comment offensive. I normally have great respect for you, but I can’t respect that statement.
For the record, I am thrilled that Obama is coming. I last saw him speaking to us at a labor rally at the State Capitol in support of labor back when he was a State Senator.

Wow! I have a hard time believing much of what I am reading. I voted for the president and am very proud of him. No he has not accomplished as much as I would have liked, but every thing he has accomplished, which is much more than one first thinks, has been accomplished in the face of unparalleled hostility. Just look at some of the lunatics that are in the GOP primary and think of the environment they create. I am extremely proud of Barack Obama.

There’s a terrible lack of respect for the office. You may not have voted for him, but he’s YOUR president and MY president. I was not a fan of W’s policies, but he came to Springfield to open the ALPLM. I went because it was historic. I didn’t whine and pout about it because I disagreed with him on policy issues. Neither has to wait for the other to propose a balanced budget or pass a balanced budget. They can do their jobs, but neither will without the other as a full partner. Everyone else hurts until then.

Interesting development. Why would the President make this move? Is this Barack Obama helping the Party that made him who he is? Is this his big concert in his old high school gymnasium? Is this to bring in the booming sound of Air Force One to thwart a threat to the Democrats? I don’t remember the President speaking to the Wisconsin Legislature in 2011, and I am not sure which scenario that supports more.

I’m going to go slam my hand in a door now. It would be less painful that reading some of the garbage being posted here. Are some of you so tied up with partisanship that you are incapable of making a comments devoid of party politics? It’s as if you can’t speak unless something partisan isn’t said.
The President of the United States is coming to Illinois to address the General Assembly. That should be enough to make anyone happy. Some of you need to take off your partisan blinders and can all of the snarky comments. I’m convinced that some of you have not one original thought in your head and rely on some English to partisan dictionary to say anything at all.

Clearly, if the President is coming to talk about politics, it will be difficult to claim this as “official presidential business”. So, who pays for the gas, etc. for that (those) big airplane(s)? He is coming to one of (if not the) brokest states in the Nation, so IL shouldn’t have to pick up the tab. Gonna have to lay a lot of wreaths, etc. to balance that. And, there is the matter of the as yet unpaid bill for his previous visit.
Yes, it is historic, but having been involved with a few presidential visits and events, it will be an enormous undertaking and the traffic jams will be only a small portion of the disruption.

Good catch on President Carter addressing the GA in ‘78. I honestly don’t recall the visit although my dad would have been there at the time and I’m sure he attended the President’s address.
Regardless of your political leanings anyone who can score access to the gallery for this event would be nuts not to go. This is historical.

For all the people grumbling about how Obama “stiffed” the city of Springfield for a campaign stop, you should talk to municipalities in Ohio, Florida, and Iowa. Presidential candidates require Secret Service protection. Secret Service requires local police for support. No campaign foots the bill for security because the campaign does not ask for it. In some swing states, there are special funds their legislatures establish to help pay for the high number of presidential visits.

Regardless of your political bent, when you step back and take a look, there are a lot of similarities between Rauner and Obama
Both are wealthy
Both believe they have been given mandates
Both have legislatures that oppose them
Both try to govern by fiat and executive orders when they can’t get the needed votes
Both passionately hold their beliefs
Both can give good speeches / have good speech writers but don’t always follow up real well on what they say

SweetLou: Out of curiosity, I did some Googling, and about all I could was a speech in Africa where he says “No one should be President for life” and went on to talk about the party in power in Burundi, and how they shouldn’t change the rules so that they stay in power. I can see how that can be bent into “He supports term limits for State representatives” but I doubt that’s what he had in mind.
