Hey, he’s just doin’ what he said he’d do

Posted in:

* Sun-Times

“There are 48 states with a budget. There are two states without a budget: Pennsylvania and Illinois. You know what they both have in common? Both have governors that come from the private sector with no political experience,” [Mayor Rahm Emanuel] said.

“I’m not saying political experience is everything. But knowing how to work with people creating a compromise — there’s a skill that comes with that. It comes with ideas, persuasion, cooperation, trust-building from Day One.”

Ok, point taken. He’s made a ton of rookie mistakes. The other factor here is that Pennsylvania has a liberal Democratic governor and a conservative GOP legislature, the opposite of Illinois. It’s not an easy minefield to navigate without any relevant experience for either man.

* But this impasse is not all about Rauner’s inexperience. Remember this TV ad from the 2014 campaign?

That’s become my favorite ad of the entire year.

In the ad, Rauner predicted he would “drive the career politicians nuts.” Mrs. Rauner rolled her eyes knowingly in the ad and smirked. He laughed and said “I will, I’ll drive ‘em nuts.”

He wasn’t actin’ cuz he’s sure doin’ it now.

  3. Compare that video to the one from the Sangamon County GOP dinner. BIG difference. Maybe he should hire the first crew instead of Proft for future tapings.

  4. That Diana “Bruce has no social agenda” Rauner, President of Ounce of Prevention…

    Laughin’, rollin’ her eyes, gigglin’…

Diana Rauner is complicit in the utter decimstion of Illinois’ social service safety net, trading on her personal capital as Ounce’s president…

… and deafly silent, saying nothing about the man SHE vouched for and enjoyin’ that First Lady title.

I thought Diana Rauner would be embarrassed. Diana Rauner’s personal and complete silence says otherwise.

Social Service providers, advocates, those who lost jibe, those who lost services, look at Diana Rauner laugh. Who is she really laughing at? Ask yourselves, as Diana Rauner silently sits as you all face destruction.

  5. Most Lady Di knew he had no clue what he was talkin’ about…and has proved it.
The only folks goin’ nuts are the GOPies and the
1$ers who are askin’ which $upper$tar drew the “plan” to make Dunk, Gonzo and Benton the first string and wash all that cashola down the drain.

  6. How charming! Isn’t that Diana Rauner adorable? I’d love to see our First Lady out in public more. I’d love to talk to her about her cute ads for her husband, and about what happens to children when their parents lose access to safe, reliable healthcare, and about families who can’t afford to care for their disabled and elderly loved ones. Because gosh, that Diana is just adorbs, and I think she would have many cute, funny things to say.

I mean, it’s not really her problem that her “I’m a Democratic, and I’m voting for my lovable husband” ads helped to elect the worst Illinois governor in my lifetime. It’s not like she’s put herself out there as an advocate for children or anything.

    Amirite?

  7. I just saw on the news that Louisiana’s Governor threatened that if his state does not pass a budget LSU’s football season could be threatened.

Can Bruce threaten the people of Illinois that they would be forced to watch Illini football unless we get a budget?

    It might work.

Comment by HL Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 2:54 pm

  8. I think we should leave Diana Rauner out of it. I mean, she hasn’t covered herself in any fame or fortune or praise. But her husband’s a big enough target for all the well-deserved criticism coming his way.

  12. Yes, it’s hilarious how a vulture capitalist can buy the governorship and destroy the state. I’ll be laughing all the way to the different state I’m moving to in July.

  13. ZC — you did see the ad, right?

Comment by Soccermom Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 3:00 pm

  14. Sorry, Rich. You have to understand that Hulu decided I needed to see that Diana Rauner ad multiple times, every time I watched a show, no matter what it was. My neighbors eventually called the authorities to report a woman screaming uncontrollably at 10-minute intervals…

    Ha ha!

    Goofy smile and knowing laugh!

But he’s going to shake things up!
    Hilarious! He’s such a goof!

Have to love the Rauner sense of humor.

They make me miss the warm hearts and duty to public service of the Blagojevichs.

Comment by Gooner Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 3:05 pm

  16. Driving career politicians nuts isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the means he is using toward that end is destroying many of the states basic institutions, has a terrible human cost, and will ultimately leave us with higher financial costs as well. Look in the mirror, if you live in and care about Illinois, you are who Rauner is willing to destroy to drive Madigan crazy.

Comment by AC Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 3:05 pm

  17. Rahm was so concerned about the State and City budget crisis that he left for Cabo today.

Comment by Quincy Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 3:06 pm

  18. Rich,

Obviously I’m not seeing comments that are being held for moderation or just straight up deleted but Diana Rauner is fair game as far as her role in getting Bruce Rauner elected, her silence on the issues that Ounce of Prevention should care about, etc. right?

She’s a public figure. She’s got a chief of staff. She chose to be in those commercials.

Your place, your rules and sometimes you’ve got to send a message. Can’t have people teeing of on someone’s wife. I get it. Just seems unbalanced for Diana to be out front when it’s time to humanize her husband or whatever the consultants call it and then declare her off limits after that.

    She suited up.

  28. I think the title of this post is EXACTLY why I am really angry at all my fellow citizens who voted for Rauner. He told us what he was going to do. He has done it. It has been predictably disastrous for the poor, the elderly, the disabled, students and prospective students, etc. I am angry at you, my Rauner-voting fellow Illinoisans. Look what you have done to us. Allowed Bruce Rauner to do what he threatened to do.

  30. Rewatching the ad, and reflecting on the past year in Illinois it reminds me that a politician without a specific plan is dangerous. There’s nothing in and of itself about driving your political adversaries nuts, if there is a means to that end. Prior to the election details from Rauner were sketchy, we knew he’d “shake up Springfield ” but not how. As it turns out, that was the plan, not the means to the end but the end itself.

And I think The First Lady who should not be mentioned was too hard on Rauner’s shirt, it’s the real innocent bystander in this whole mess.

Comment by AC Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 3:26 pm

  31. Rauner the Bruce is only drivin’ himself nuts. He’s walked onto the battlefield, fully armed with hostages gagged and bound. But, his opponent patiently waits for constituents to weigh in. Afterall, 1/3, at full strength, is still 33%. 33% is a loser. 33% is a landslide defeat. All is lost. And, hostages will be rescued. Injured, weakened, and thirsty, the hostages will NEVER forget. The battlefield will be joined. The memories will fuel an attack not expected and mercy will not be considered. In science, every action meets an equal and opposite reaction. So be it.

  34. Rich, your point is well taken. Focus on the real issue. 10-4.

All the giggling in the add seems all that much more repugnant in retrospect given what is happening in Illinois.

Bruce Rauner has not sacrificed anything but has plenty of sacrificial lambs out there. The weakest of our society being front and center. It is shameful. But the giggling only serves to rub salt in the wounds of those actually hurting.

I am embarrassed that I have dared to complain about the state of education given the suffering of so many in this state. Public education is my chief interest and area of expertise. It is a path to success and provides hope for the future. Social services are the safety net that provide for support for families in need so that they can take advantage of what public education has to offer. For other those social services are a lifeline or the only way that folks can participate in our society.

Bruce Rauner and his compatriots has no compunction about sacrificing something that hurts the most vulnerable.

But hey, he is driving the career politicians nuts tee hee hee! And he is wearing a bad shirt, tee hee hee! /s

  35. Yes she campaigned for him, but she’s basically been a non-combatant since. Not judging those who feel otherwise, everyone will set their own rules here.

Comment by ZC Friday, Feb 12, 16 @ 4:06 pm

  36. Are you kidding me? This ain’t some kids game about “driving people nuts.”

That’s just shallow TV-spot talk. It has nothing to do with anything.

The real objectives are the results that we see now from the actions to date: Enormous deficits coupled zeroed out funding for core responsibilities.

    That combination is unprecedented.

That means, by necessity, going forward, a greatly reduced baseline, for everything. That was the goal, not some silly “personality conflict.”

It also means junk bond status is a foregone conclusion, and around the corner, but I’m sure the governor knew that when he embarked on this course.

The governor ain’t an idiot. After eight months, there are no unfortunate accidents. This is the “squeeze the beast” plan to advance the “shakeout.”

In other words, full-Darwin. He’ll do business, later, with those who survive, on his terms.
