* Political Flyer Dredges Up Rep. Dunkin’s Previous Trouble With The Law: He says local Mike Madigan Democrats are out to get him because he’s broken with the House Speaker on some key issues. “It’s unfortunate, but this is the depths that they’ll stoop to because they’re so desperate and so thirsty to discredit me, because I’m my own man,” Dunkin says.

  1. Too many words. Very busy.

Comment by DHSJim Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:32 am

  2. Wow - A+. Written well, designed well, short and sweet with what looks like actual facts versus negative hyperbole.

Comment by Politix Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:33 am

  3. A+

To reconcile his absence to the Aquagrill, with campaign cash, is the kind of full circle audit of actual behavior versus cheap words that is what will save our democracy!

(…a little dramatic I know, but I meant it!!!)

  4. “Failed to show up” sets a very low bar that Ken Dunkin still can’t clear.

    B+

  5. I agree that this is an A+.
The first side makes the case very clearly.
The second provides the details to flesh it out.

This one is going to hit home.

Comment by Gooner Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:38 am

  6. I really like it but it’s designed to appeal to people like me but unfortunately I suspect that DHSJim’s criticism has some merit.

Comment by The Captain Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:39 am

  7. Dunkin failed to show up for Blagojevich’s impeachment vote, too, right?

Man seems to miss critical votes. A coincidence, right?

    Right?

Comment by Macbeth Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:42 am

  8. How may expenditures form Dunkin’s NYC were charged to the campaign? Given his largess through Proft’s PAC you can definitely say Rauner paid for this trip.

Comment by wndycty Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:42 am

  9. C

This is very wordy. Granted, it’s not a walk piece. But it’s still a pretty lengthy read. And why quote a newspaper from Carbondale for a race in Chicago proper? Seems a bit odd/off.

Comment by Team Sleep Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:42 am

  10. Don’t forget, that is the same restaurant he was at when he threw kids to the curb by not voting on SB 570 as well. A+ for the piece.

    Comment by 360 Degree TurnAround Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:44 am

  11. Assuming this is being sent to just his district, why did they include the article from the Southern. Didn’t the Trib, Sun-Times or Daily Defender run similar pieces?

Comment by Bogey Golfer Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:46 am

  12. A+, key messages that union households may respond to - ouch

I hope that lunch was really good Ken.

Comment by siriusly Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:51 am

  13. While a decent % of union households have voted in the past for Scott Walker and Rauner, I think the % of union households votin’ for Dunkin will be VERY small. Well done and I’m sure more to come.

Comment by Springfield Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:53 am

  14. Good idea and message, very poorly executed from a design perspective. Labor really needs to get its act together and start bringing the A game. The best message in the world is worthless if people have to work to find it. It’s like all the clean creative of the Obama campaigns made no impression.

Comment by Moe Berg Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:54 am

  15. Did he really expense the meal on his campaign account?

I thought he was there for a youth tennis match or something. That’s just not very wise. Are we going to find out he’s driven 700,000 miles in the last 12 years?

Comment by Anon Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:54 am

  16. A+ for the targeted union household audience. Similar approach using SB 570 also would be effective for wider audience.

Comment by Decaff Coffee Party Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:57 am

  17. yawn.

    Comment by 13th Ward Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 10:57 am

  18. I think I would’ve gone with the $200 dinner at something called “NoMo SoHo” over the Aquagrill, because there couldn’t possibly be a more pretentious, annoying, Manhattan name than that

Comment by Jimmy CrackCorn Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:01 am

  19. I love it that the ad shows actual facts! I’m happy they did not lower themselves to Profit’s negative hyperbole. The teacher give this ad an A.

Comment by Mama Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:15 am

  20. F-

I hate when things try to make me understand stuff.

Comment by Boooooooo Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:17 am

  21. What is the name of the other Democrat Representative who voted no or voted present on the union bill. I know Franks is not running for office since he got the Auditors General’s job. Is the other Dem, whom voted no, currently running for office?

Comment by Mama Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:19 am

  22. AFL-CIO should post ads against all the Republicans who voted against them and running for re-election.

Comment by Mama Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:21 am

  23. Mama - it was Franks and Drury, and both men are running for reelection.

Comment by Team Sleep Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:31 am

  24. Mama, an attack piece against Franks on this issue wouldn’t work in the general and he’d never get primaried. An attack piece piece against against Drury on this issue may have worked in the primary but not in the general, and he’s currently unopposed this cycle, although the Republicans may still slate someone this spring. The AFL-CIO should utilize their resources in better ways.

Comment by Treadmill Runner Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 11:43 am

  25. I give it an A-. While as some readers suggested that it may be too lengthy, especially for the low information voters, it should resonate with those more capable of critical thinking.

Comment by Williamson County Resident Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 12:01 pm

  26. A-, this to me tesonates far better the. the old arrest stuff

Comment by Ghost Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 12:05 pm

  27. Take out the union stuff, insert the daycare vote and send it to the whole district. Solid A. Much better than old crim stuff.

Comment by burbanite Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 12:11 pm

  28. A+ I’m telling you guys Mr. Dunkin lives like a lobbyist let the ad tell us, Lobbying might be his calling.

Comment by Down State Paul Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 12:24 pm

  29. Excellent political ad, but even if Mr Dunkin loses he still wins because he gets to keep Rauner’s $500,000 campaign donation.

Comment by Gary from Chicagoland Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 12:37 pm

  30. C most people in the district wont care

Comment by austinman Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 1:13 pm

  31. ===most people in the district ===

    Did you not read?

This is targeted at labor households.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 1:33 pm

  32. Less effective than the mugshot. Each cycle, more and more, it is the impression these pieces can make as they are walked directly to the recycle bin. I see Dunkin and his name, some chow I would be happy to tuck into, a bunch of words, a picture of some lady.

    Meh. C-

    Comment by Touré's Latte Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 1:44 pm

  33. Dunkin did this to himself…this dude is so blatantly arrogant in his own lies it’s puts a normal politician to shame. He is ‘not his own man,’ he’s a sellout.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 1:53 pm

  34. Text aside, I think there’s value in the nice photo of Ms. Stratton; first impression is that she’s the antithsesis of all the self-centered squirrelliness we’ve come to associate with Dunkin.

    Comment by Stumpy's bunker Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 2:47 pm

  35. This.

    This EXACTLY…..

Labor. This is “going to work”. This is “doing what needs to be done”. This is… education.

It only works, however, if you get Labor, all Labor, to pull together.

Get it done. Do the job.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 3:09 pm

  36. “A” for the add.

Any good polling numbers in this race?

Comment by Rollo Tomasi Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 3:33 pm

  37. ===Any good polling numbers in this race?===

    Subscribe.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 19, 16 @ 3:38 pm

  38. -Good text (for those who want to know more)
-Shows Dunkin’s image near images of self-indulgence (not a stretch)
-shows good photo of candidate, not overblown
    -media citations and facts

The folks at AFL-CIO outdid themselves on this one. “A” grade; delivered with a hearty handshake.
