This is structural reform.
People who don’t think government does anything, this is a hard lesson on how many services it actually provides for all of us.

Reducing union rights is the primary goal, but destroying public institutions like universities isn’t a bad consolation prize for Rauner because he only believes in private for profit institutions.

Glassman’s question is appropriate and fair.
Problem is, Rauner’s answer will be more campaign-style, non-specific, because-Madigan rhetoric.
I don’t think any of us buy it, I dare say even servile, cringing office-holding Raunerbots.
We are left to guess what the endgame is.
Advantage: Rauner. But not in the long run.

All of this destruction so taxpayers can save 0.0125% of their income? If you have an adjusted gross of $100K, that’s about $100 bucks a month you’re saving. That’s a cell phone bill.
But apparently it has become Bruce Rauner’s Waterloo. What an idiot. He’s sending Illinois over the cliff for a lousy $100 per month.

Haven’t heard how dire GSU is at, at the moment, but Western, Eastern, CSU, abd Southern are dyingbon the vine, I know that.

And the best GOP response we get comes from Righter, Rezin and Barickman - House please come back. You expect your hurting schools to take that as an answer. Do you think folks are that stupid. Do your folks a favor and vote for the House approp bill. Tell Rauner that you’ll vote for the override. That’s what will help your schools. I’m embarrassed for you that you hold on to the pablum from the gov that procurement reform will help pay for it or loan forgiveness will pay for it. Pass the higher ed bill and tell Rauner his way of paying for it is to negotiate a complete budget. A budget that will reallocate resources within the construct of all the state’s needs - including higher ed.

1.25% X $100,000 = $1,250

Sorry Willy, didn’t put that together.
GSU is in better shape than some, but not in great shape.
Based on GSU’s 6/30/15 financial statements, they had about $36 million Cash and investments on hand. They received about $24 million in state appropriations in 2015, plus any MAP grants and other state grants. So, assuming all other things being equal, they can survive up to 18 months after June 30, 2015 without state appropriations (probably less due to lack of MAP grants in FY 2016). So, they’re going to be hurting come fall semester as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear about GSU making cutbacks in the not too distant future to try to extend out how long they can go.

Endgame? Endgame? This is his endgame. Bruise Ruiner gets to play governor in retirement. Why not fish or play golf? What in the world do you think he did as part of his working career? I know the type. I’ve made a lot of money for people who fish and play golf all day.

The math works out even more favoribly if you consider that state taxes are deductible for someine who itemizes, so for someone 47th Ward’s example the effective increase would be closer to 1% for someone in a 20% tax bracket.
On the other side of the comparison, consider how high tax rates will need to be raised when all the costs of the destruction are taken into account, I suspect we will look back fondly on our 5% tax rate.
Comparing the destruction of social services, public universities, and other important governmental programs/services with an immeasurable human impact, with even a week’s worth of pay spread through the year, and I’ll happily pay more in taxes. So, compared with the destruction, a 2% increase would seem inconsequential to me.

It’s not a lot of money when spread out over all the taxpayers. However, a lot of our citizens can’t think past the end of their distain for state employees and legislators. I am amazed at my ‘friends’ on facebook that are blindly following Rauner because they believe his ’shaking up Springfield’ rhetoric. Many of them are the same people who are blinding following Trump.
That being said - there’s a whole lot of parents and grandparents who are going to wonder what happened when their offspring can’t go to college in Illinois.

There is no concern if they survive or not.
But the Governor does not understand that you lose political strategic control and leverage in a hurry as soon as you cross an invisible line on this path. Is this CSU+EIU+Catholic Charities ? Who knows ? But there is always a line in political chicken that is too far. In contrast, you can bust out a business down to nothing.

Oswego Willy, I live in one of the towns you mentioned. One of our university trustees, responding to a Facebook post which criticized our GOP state rep for what is happening to our town, responded by criticizing Madigan. When reminded (sarcastically) that Madigan is not our state rep, the trustee (local business owner) deleted her post.

WIU a a Call vote Curtis against Hammond.WIU got some students from a failed private college. No one is coming to buy our old academic infrastructure. If we go its over. I think WIU can last another year but it won’t be in good shape.’CSU needs a budget by fall.

Rauner wants a pound of flesh in exchange for a tax increase that everyone knows is inevitable. Madigan doesn’t want to give a pound of flesh for a tax increase that has to happen.
