Mushrooms sprout green shoots

Rank-and-file Illinois lawmakers frustrated by the 10-month state budget impasse are meeting on their own in bipartisan groups to discuss potential solutions.

Some of those legislators spoke Monday in Chicago during a forum on the budget hosted by The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform.

State Reps. William Davis, a Homewood Democrat, and Republican Robert Pritchard of Hinckley say they recently attended a lawmaker gathering in suburban Chicago to discuss tactics. They declined to discuss specific proposals, saying they’re in the initial phases. The goal is to present plans to legislative leaders in hopes of resolving the stalemate between Democratic legislative leaders and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who haven’t met in months.

Things are starting to happen again and we might see results pretty quickly. You’ll recall that Gov. Rauner shut down a similar process last year because it didn’t produce enough results for him and, to a lesser extent, because he was angry that the process became public. But times are changing.

  2. April 7, 1865, telegrams.

Gen. Sheridan: “If the thing is pressed, I believe Lee will surrender.”

Lincoln: “Let the thing be pressed.”

    How badass is that?

Among other things, along with that riverboat captain from across the river in Hannibal, the inventor of American English.

  3. It looks like Robert Pritchard, a university GOP member, is getting it. Hopefully other university GOP members figure it out as well.

  5. The R’s saw in the primary that money doesn’t always win and they have been whacked for taking Rauner money right before a floor vote so why wouldn’t they start trying to do their job finally?

  11. Neither Rauner or Madigan are as powerful as perceived and played for the media. Let’s move on, GA.

  12. Was percolating below the surface all along. The best folks never stopped talking about middle positions and modest wins. Just needed some cracks in the surface to emerge.

Hopefully Pritchard and Davis, and others, get rewarded and not punished for showing their faces. Please save us from any repaving.

  17. Not knowing exactly who is involved, I would be pleasantly surprised if a few were my downstate Republican members of the GA were involved in this discussion. One is retiring and the other has taken money from the Slush Fund. Guess we will have to wait to find out where the alliances are.

  18. There are precious few profiles in courage in the G.A., even among retiring members.

  19. ==Looks like the revolt is about ready to bloom==

It wasn’t the decimation of Social Services, whom serve a low percentage of voters. It’s the annihilation of upper education and the MAP grants. I’m sure GA members got an earful from local parents/children of soon-to-be and current college students.

  23. Yeah Rich. You’re a political reporter with a story about how things might finally get moving in the right direction but, for heaven’s sake, can’t you be scientifically correct with your mycology metaphors? *eye roll*
