Zopp tapped to be deputy mayor

Posted in:

* Sneed

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has offered a slice of the power pie to former Urban League powerhouse Andrea Zopp, a highly respected Chicago attorney who lost her Democratic primary bid for the U.S. Senate to Tammy Duckworth.

Sneed has learned Rahm asked Zopp, who has strong ties to Chicago’s African-American political and fiscal power players, to become Chicago’s deputy mayor in charge of overseeing major city projects.

“Rahm can talk a good game, but he needs to get his projects completed,” said a top Sneed source familiar with the Zopp appointment.

Translation: Rahm feels Zopp’s moxie and magic can get things done.

  1. ==Zopp’s Dem primary loss to Duckworth was a stunner …==

What? Who was stunned? Did she ever get within 25% of Duckworth?

  2. I like this pick. Whatever her deficiencies were in the Senate race this makes much more sense.

    However, there’s this:

Zopp’s Dem primary loss to Duckworth was a stunner to a cadre of Chicago’s African-American political powerhouses furious Duckworth was chosen for the job by Washington insiders at the Democratic National Campaign Committee — rather than listening to what the City Council and black legislative caucuses had to say.

Stunned? Really? She lost by 40 points (64-24). You were stunned by a 40 point loss? You couldn’t see a 40 point loss coming? Here’s a tip: don’t go telling people you were stunned by a 40 point loss, they’ll stop calling you things like “political powerhouse” and they’ll stop taking you seriously.

  4. ==Zopp’s Dem primary loss to Duckworth was a stunner …== She rubber-stamped a multi-million dollar deal to Bennett’s cronies while on the CPS Board. Guess that’s moxie in some circles.

  5. “Zopp tapped to be deputy mayor”

I guess it’s better than Topp being zapped.

  6. The Mayor has made a high-quality pick here. Zopp is better at actually getting things done than being a candidate.

  7. And she can groom herself and make even more wealthy friends for her next political run.

  8. Good move by Rahm - I’m a big fan of Zopp. She was never going to win that US Senate race, both because of Duckworth’s many advantages and Zopp’s baggage, but she’s really smart and talented.

  9. Because she did such a great job at the Chicago Public Schools?

  10. I agree that the stink of the Byrd Bennett deal remains in the room. Can’t claim to be a reformer or even an effective mainstream Pol with that on your record.

  11. Sneed referring to herself in the third person is pompous and annoying. It would be much better if she wrote “Ed Burke said….” or “Anne Burke informed me….”.
