Many Senate Republicans downplay the impact of Donald Trump’s divisive candidacy on their chances in November, stressing the importance of local issues. But ask those same Republicans about Hillary Clinton, and suddenly who’s on the top of that ticket becomes very important, Politico reports.
Except to one.
“Asked whether Clinton will hurt Democratic Senate candidate Tammy Duckworth in Illinois, Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., replied: ‘No,’ before an aide interrupted him and swept him away,” the website reports.

More on the context and details of this exchange would be interesting.
How was the senator “swept away,” exactly?

Hillary is going to win Illinois by wide margin. This is not controversial.

slow down, slow down. This one is a different thing than any of us have seen. She may win in Illinois, but it won’t be uncontested. Won’t be anywhere.

A guy, I’m going to have to respectfully disagree. Even if you assume that Hillary is just as toxic a candidate as Trump (which is not the case when you compare unfavorables), Hillary will win the state easily on tribalism grounds alone. This is a heavily blue state, particularly in presidential election years. Trump can talk all he wants about 90s era Clinton scandals but he will still lose Illinois and it won’t be close.

Control tower “Advance staffer - wake up - Senator Kirk is about to say something unscripted, please sweep him away from the microphone! Over?”
Staffer “Rodger Rodger Control. Situation Contained, Senator Kirk has been diverted away from live unscripted interactions”

Definitely a gaffe by Kirk - he spoke the truth. Not only will Hillary win IL by a wide margin so will Duckworth.

Consider the source. Natasha Korecki aside, Politico’s D.C.-based newsroom is notorious for regurgitating Republican talking points and concern trolling.

Fair enough. We shall wait until the tale of the tape. We’ll know in less that 180 days.

Though the RCP poll avg shows Trump is beating Clinton, Clinton probably will not hurt Duckworth in Illinois.
Clinton will not help Duckworth, either.
