  2. The Cullerton Mistake continues to haunt…

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:12 pm

  3. Cullerton, you HAVE to be the Dem voice in this war with Rauner. You’re doing the good cop routine. That’s not going to help with Rauner. Up the level. Bite back.

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:13 pm

  4. Rauner had Barickman and The Owl with him at the podium, Cullerton stands alone, with his members in the audience…

    Sales-Man-Ship!!!!

  5. - Norseman -,

I shake me head and.. I shake me head.

    It’s mind boggling

  6. I thought that President Cullerton congratulated the Governor during their election night phone call /s/

  7. I think Cullerton exposed the Governor’s rhetoric for what it is, empty and a distraction.

But something tells me that not all reports of today’s events will describe it that way.

  8. The closest thing Illinois has to a reasonable person … and probably the last hope for Illinois.

Comment by RNUG Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:29 pm

  9. What I learned?

Rauner plays the media tune… Madigan and Cullerton sing off-key.

    Sorry.

    To the Post,

There needs to be 1,000 times better media presence and coordination between social services and Democrats, specifically.

What is just unbelievable is that this has been going on for months… and still these two groups can’t figure out how to coordinate better than Rauner looking inept with the Owl.

Rauner is winning the argument with lesser rationale and great bluster.

The spread between Rauner’s Press Shop, as ridiculous at times they are, and the isolated Cullerton, Madigan, and stoical services messaging, which factually and actually is so much more on point and talks to the people being hurt more directly.

I can’t stand watching politics and baseball played poorly, and while Rauner is winning (see today as a prime example) this messaging of the messages, it’s not that Rauner’s Press Shop is the 1927 New York Yankees, it’s that Rauner’s Press Shop has a knack at making the others look like the 1962 New York Mets.

    Get your acts together.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:32 pm

  10. So I assume the unspoken message here is we Democrat Senators who are trying to be above the political fray will stop the working groups if Governor Rauner doesn’t stop attacking Mayor Emanuel and himself for being two faced on privately supporting restrictions on public sector collective bargaining and publicly opposing the Governor’s proposals.

Even more amazing in all of this is the fact that based on how President Cullerton lays it out Governor Rauner is willing to pass a full year k-12 education budget without having the revenue, but he is only willing to pass a six month theoretical budget based on available revenue for Human Services and every thing else.

To say President Cullerton looks like he is begging would not be ungenerous.

Comment by Rod Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:37 pm

  11. OW is saying what I’ve been saying for about a year now, the Dems messaging game isn’t getting the job done, the Gov’s team keeps winning these hands with much weaker cards.

Also, to all these [whipser]maybe[/whisper] Democratic gubernatorial candidates you can step up and fill that void any time. Now would be a good time. Like right now.

  12. === … and coordination between social services and Democrats, specifically. ===

I agree Willy. However, most of the social service community is playing the “blame all” game. I find this dumbfounding considering labor’s support of social services programs and the minimal upside to them if the poison pills pass. Rauner took social services and so many other programs hostage to cripple labor. Letting him partially off the hook seems like we’re seeing the institutional application of the Stockholm syndrome.

They’ve been starved and some sad cases killed by Rauner’s impasse and want to see anything done to get out from under this heartless action. That’s understandable, but pushing Dems into agreeing to a deal that significantly harms labor will not benefit them in the long run.

Rauner is going to continue to squeeze social service funding. Only next time, labor may not be around to be social services’ ally in this effort.

Rauner put social services in the middle of this fight and Rauner needs to be the one targeted for attack for this action.

  13. - Norseman -

You’re on point, no suprise. I guess I’m on this camp of already knowing Rauner all along wanted to pit Unions and Social Services against each other for his leverage, per his speeches catalogued here…

I would’ve moved on, knowing Rauner is squeezing the beast, and the three groups decide to hang together or be defeated separately.

They are 15 months in, and still this “we don’t want to offend… ”

… and this ridiculous countering… It’s tiring watching the standing still for political correctness and not just acknowledging the politics at play.

If this is hedging bets, there will be no house to bet to get a deal.

See - Norseman - once again, I need your counter and counsel.

  14. Oswego Willy, please define “winning”

How many seats need to switch from Dem to GOP on November 8th for Rauner to be the “winner” ??

As for winning the daily media wars, who is even paying attention except insiders and political players?

  15. ==There needs to be 1,000 times better media presence and coordination between social services and Democrats===

I’m not disagreeing with you here Willy, but what makes you think the former wants to stand with the latter?
They’re assigning blame to the people whose districts they serve the most. If there’s anything driving that caucus back to the table, it’s these groups. Their perspective is a bit more intimate than has been shouted about. They are angry at the people who get elected and re-elected by the people they serve.

  16. ===please define “winning”===

Read the coverage today, tell me who “won”

Which sides seems to be trying to respond to the other, feeble as it is?

===How many seats need to switch from Dem to GOP on November 8th for Rauner to be the “winner” ??===

None. It’s a long game. It’s not about today or the next.

It is about the next map and slowly crippling Madigan and Democrats. It’s also about draining every dime in Democratic coffers.

    The answer is none.

===As for winning the daily media wars, who is even paying attention except insiders and political players?===

The table is being set for November. Can’t be constantly chasing without boiling your own foundation.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 3:22 pm

  17. Willy, excellent response on winning.

The Dems made a mistake by failing to pass a budget. Madigan’s lead and you follow Sen. Dems mode of operation will come back and haunt H. Dems. Cullerton’s mistake doesn’t help either and could have only been remedied with a budget. (Yes, I did “blame” Madigan.)

Had the Dems passed a budget, Rauner would have a weaker message.

Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 3:43 pm

  18. - Norseman -

    Thanks…

    To this…

===Cullerton’s mistake doesn’t help either and could have only been remedied with a budget. (Yes, I did “blame” Madigan.)===

This was THE play. No budget on Rauner’s desk was the fail.

It was telegraphed months ago, Rauner was going to barnstorm whatever passed, (or surprisingly didn’t) so agree on something, no raising of taxes, let Rauner have something to own the Veto.

===Had the Dems passed a budget, Rauner would have a weaker message.===

    … yep.

  19. ===Norseman [all day long, especially @ 3:43]===

I wish YOU were advising the Democratic “leaders”. They are leading just about as well as Rauner is “governing”…

Comment by Mr. Smith Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 3:55 pm

  20. Mr. Smith, thank you for the compliment. (Ironic considering I started as a GOP legislative staffer.)

In fairness, it’s kinda like backseat driving. Easier said then done. They have to deal with the personalities (leaders & members); the demands of allies; and, the difficulty of crafting any budget given the horrible deficit and problems created by Rauner’s impasse.
