The governor explained that the state’s stack of unpaid bills would be too big to go that long without a full budget.
He didn’t say what he would be willing to do (or the Turnaround Agenda issues he’d drop) to avoid such a disaster, however.

We are already 1 year, 11 months and 23 days into an administration that hasn’t done anything to pass a budget. What is another 2 years?

The governor of a state is supposed to be “the buck stops here” leader of that state. Rauner needs to accept that responsibility.

LOL, so Stacky isn’t too big yet? Just how big is he gonna have to get before he’s “too big?”
Munger estimated in March that backlog of unpaid bills could be $10 billion by July 1. Apparently, that’s not “too big.”
The backlog was $4.3 billion when Rauner took office. Apparently, that was “too small.”

What business person would even consider going four years without being paid while they continue providing Illinois goods and services? I am shocked that more vendors of the state have not stopped providing goods and services as of today. How much longer can the vendors continue doing so without going bankrupt?

He’s wrong, BTW. Legally and fiscally, there is no limit to how large the backlog can get.
Presumably at some point, vendors will either collapse or refuse to provide services, but there is every reason to think that the state will continue to stall that day by passing piecemeal budgets to keep the hostages alive, and that the governor’s office will continue to “warn” folks as they warned Mt. Sterling that criticizing the governor for failing to keep his promises has “consequences.”
So, it will end when the governor decides he is ready to stop stalling.

When he was inaugurated, no one truly thought we’d go this long without a budget. His comptroller seems pretty sure we’ve reached the end of our rope. I’d suggest he start governing and leading- time to quit with the ‘who knows’ stuff.

Possible question of the day;
Knowing what we know now, if the GA had it to do over again, should they have extended the tax hike?
Not suggesting they were wrong not to do so, I don’t think its fair to say they should have predicted the current state of affairs. Just curious if thoughts on the matter differ now.

You could fold them into a Burrito Supreme, $75K a year ain’t gonna cut it on maintenance for 56 historic sites.

“Why don’t you know?”
“How big of a backlog of bills will require the passing of a budget?”
The Gov demonstrates such a lack of respect towards the people of Illinois, he just says ridiculously dishonest or ignorant things and runs away. Meep meep.

My takeaway from watching is the video is as follows:
- Bankruptcy the only option for CPS
- GOP may pick up seats in November.
- Dems may pick up seats in November.
- Crain’s: Maybe what you’re doing isn’t working. Maybe it’s time for a rethink? Rauner: Nope.

These “more powerful” measures Rauner is talking about on the video — and the “not going to speculate what happens later this summer” — seems to be directly about AFSCME and a strike, no?

The Crain’s edit board has been very tough on Rauner on his inability to quantify the benefits of the Turnaround Agenda, his big-deficit budget proposals, the mushrooming bill backlog and for not honoring contracts.

I was one of the few people in my predominantly Republican downstate county who did not vote for Rauner. Our county seat is the site for a public university whose future is in jeopardy. One of our university trustees supports Rauner. Local businesses are suffering but the owners still back Rauner. Beam me up, there is no intelligent life here.

Our state has become a joke. Friends, who aren’t particularly political people have asked me:
1) What in heavens name is going on with all the murders in Chicago and is it even safe to come visit?
2) Is your governor sane?
They hear about our bizarre issues on TV in their states. Maybe our governor and Chicago’s mayor find this to be their claim to fame? As if this is some soap opera and they get their names publicized more often this way?

IMHO, Governor Rauner is not a good person. His motivation and ultimate goal, which he will inflict unmeasurable pain to obtain, does not ultimately benefit the citizens of Illinois. It will benefit those who contribute the millions to perpetuate the “agenda.” Class warfare.

If you follow that thought to it’s logical conclusion, until it is big enough that Illinois can not recover and the US Congress or SCOTUS will have to grant bankruptcy rights to states.
