Rauner, who described himself as a free-market conservative, went so far as to say that Illinois is being damaged by a “collectivist economy,” employing a term generally used to suggest communist or socialist influence.
“We’ve become a collectivist economy in Illinois. It’s crushing us. And no problem is going to get fixed unless we bring more economic freedom into the state. And I believe that very passionately,” the governor said.
“That’s going to kill us in the long run. I’ve got to change that. And the other issues, we can debate, but that one I have to stay very strong on,” he said.

Despite its current straits, this state still has a lot going for it, including global transportation connections, a thriving arts and cultural scene, leading universities, Fortune 500 companies and a close-knit business community that’s accustomed to taking on big civic projects. Putting a businessman in the driver’s seat in Springfield will send a positive message to employers that Illinois is serious about reform and ready to embrace a pro-growth agenda.

Mr. Rauner’s experience as a private-equity investor would benefit Springfield. Government isn’t the same as business, of course. So they weren’t collectivists when they endorsed him in 2014 and reported on his business activities for the previous 25 years, but DEFINITELY are now that they don’t like him. Brilliant!

When I Googled “collectivism,” I got this from dictionary.com: “Collectivism is a political theory associated with communism. More broadly, it is the idea that people should prioritize the good of society over the welfare of the individual.”
I just posted a comment on it to another thread, but it fits better here: This guy is a hard-right wingnut, there’s no other word for it. If Crain’s Chicago Business is “collectivist,” I am the general secretary of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

Is this use just a dog whistle tool to keep conservative Republicans from realizing the collectively bad decision as a group the GOP has made to make Raunerites out of free thinkers.

It’s hard to tell if this new favorite word is the real Rauner or a new way to package his economic “doctrine.” Did he ever say this on the campaign trail? Either he’s just picking and choosing what he wants to believe and subscribe to in order to fit his immediate political needs, or his comments about not believing in the minimum wage that he walked back during the campaign were 100% accurate. Or, I guess, it’s both.

Exactly so and that is why Rauner doesn’t like it. He doesn’t want to help the poor, the elderly, the disabled, the vulnerable. He isolates himself in a bubble of privilege and forgets everyone else. He is only interested in making his investments grow by stripmining the state for corporate welfare like EDGE tax incentives.

There are two novels that can transform a governor’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs.

Perhaps a reporter can ask the Governor if he’s a Randian. He wouldn’t be the first conservative to have been shaped by Atlas Shrugged. Paul Ryan used to sing Rand’s praises, until someone pointed out she was an outspoken atheist.

I have many,many times referred to the Governor as a hypocrite. A ‘free market conservative’ would never agree to tax incentives through the likes of DCEO that create advantages for one business over another. If he doesn’t like certain tax policies, work to change them. For everybody.

EXACTLY!!!!!! I think the EDGE tax incentives report for 2015 comes out this week. It’s going to be stunning I bet. Now enterprise zones I’m a less grumpy at because they really do help the “little guys” in the zone, especially downstate. But EDGE is corporate welfare in the worst way. Most of the companies receiving them have no tax liability in the first place.

Before Gov. Rauner starts trying to label Illinois with contemporary concepts, he should start with more primitive concepts to build a foundation.
I would recommend feudalism as a good starting point. He may not have to go much further when looking for a pigeonhole for Illinois.

After WWII, Sterling Hayden was a member of the U.S. Communist Party for a brief time.
Formerly a commercial sea captain, Hayden, during the war, was an OSS agent running guns to the Tito partisans fighting the Nazis and had come to admire them.
(Due to his captain’s experience, Hayden was Spielberg’s first choice for “Quint” in “Jaws,” but he was in self-exile from the United States dodging back taxes).
Later, after he quit the party, Hayden “named names” in front of HUAC, an act for which he expressed self-loathing for the rest of his life.

Arch, Hayden’s book is a heckuva yarn.
I’m sure he would have been a great Quint — but if he had gotten the role, the world would have been deprived of the “Indianapolis” monologue by Robert Shaw, the scene that makes that movie.
It wasn’t in the script. Shaw wrote it himself on the boat and pitched it to Spielberg.
Hayden, of course, like the rest of “The Godfather” roles, was perfectly cast as Capt. McCluskey.

He should take care in his attempts to smear a word like “collectivism.” It will set off an equal and opposite reaction of others using the label “crony capitalism.”
