Rauner signs extension of medical marijuana program

* This got deliberately buried under yesterday’s big budget news

A bill extending Illinois’ medical marijuana program by 2½ years has been signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

In addition to extending the pilot program, the bill signed Thursday by Rauner adds PTSD and terminal illness to the list of qualifying conditions.

Illinois’ medical marijuana pilot program got its start under former Gov. Pat Quinn and continued under Rauner, who for more than a year resisted expanding the program beyond the original 39 conditions and diseases listed in the law.

  1. Just legalize recreational marijuana as well, so we can collect the tax revenue.

  3. “Terminal illness” wasn’t one of the original 39 conditions? Good lord, why not? Of all the valid conditions, wouldn’t that be the most valid? Were they worried about possible addiction? Geez!

  4. Full legalization will create many more jobs and bring in much needed revenue. At least now more patients will have access and the access will be easier.

  10. Any progress is good but we need to expand the list of illnesses. It’s good for patients, governments and business.

  11. I hope the PTSD designation helps give relief to some of our veterans. Especially those with injuries from our most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan theaters.

Nothing is too good for those veterans who put life and limb on the line.
