Speaker Mike Madigan says he had a conversation with U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin "a couple months ago" about running for Illinois governor in '18

Durbin asked repeatedly if he's running for governor. "I'm focused on this election cycle." Repeatedly refuses to rule future rule out.

*** UPDATE *** More from the Sun-Times…
Madigan was also asked whether he had discussions with his daughter (Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan) about a gubernatorial run: “Not recently,” he said. […]
Madigan said the party would “defer” its pick to challenge Rauner until after the November election, all the while saying there are plenty of Democrats who are interested. […]
“I think that given the record of Bruce Rauner, which dovetails very nicely with the record of Donald Trump on extremism, you’ll find plenty of Illinois Democrats that are anxious to participate in the next governor’s election,” Madigan said, calling both Rauner and Trump “on the extreme end of the Republican party.”
“They’re both going to be rejected by America and in Illinois,” he said.

It’s been said before. If he wants people to stop asking whether he is running for Governor, he needs to stop telling people he is running for Governor.
… But I get the feeling he doesn’t really want people to stop asking.

No one has mentioned JESSE WHITE for Governor, the easiest path to victory for the dems

I have one person, and one person only, I’m keeping my eye on running on the Democratic side for Governor.
I am surprised by both Durbin and Madigan’s responses to Durbin running for governor. Lots being said and “unsaid”.

It doesn’t really make much difference who’s captain of the Titanic after it’s hit the iceberg. I wonder how Durbin will fare in a government that can’t print money to fund his campaign supporters’ plunder?
Comment by Illinois Bob Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:04 am
good comparison MJM, one guy won in 2014, the other will win in 2016

I think Durbin or Raoul would be a very good choice to contest Rauner. Rauner won as a candidate with an empty slate but now has a record to run against–a terrible record, in my opinion.
Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:13 am
Kwame Raoul is a smart man, and eloquent man, and a man who understands how to deal with both overzealous supporters and critics. He would be a fine choice.
Comment by AlfondoGonz Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:15 am
Durbin would beat Rauner in a landslide.
Comment by Jay Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:22 am
Durbin would win in a landslide. Valerie Jarrett would also be a likely victor. Even Lisa Madigan would have a strong shot against Rauner. He truly has a terrible record to run on.
Comment by NSideLady Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:44 am
Ok to all of you dreamers. Exactly how will any of your preferred Governor choices solve Illinois fiscal problems absent reforms that don’t include raising taxes to 8 plus percent causing even more folks to leave and housing prices to constitute to stagnate.

“I wonder how Durbin will fare in a government that can’t print money to fund his campaign supporters’ plunder?”
What the heck does that even mean?
Comment by Nick Name Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:53 am
Every Democrats solution and only solution would be to raise taxes and run more business and people out of Illinois. Madigan needs to look in the mirror and fess up that he was central in causing the problems and has no solutions to the problems and that he has gotten rich off the backs of the taxpayers.
Comment by Arock Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:55 am
- Sue -
Rauner is going to sign a “Rauner Tax”.
That’s real, it will happen or Rauner will destroy Illinois so completely, $150 million won’t save him.
Rauner gets a few deals and a budget, a contested Dem primary and $70 million for Rauner in an uncontested primary race, Rauner should win in 2 years.
Your Raunerite talking points are ignorant to the governing that will happen.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:58 am
Durbin would win over Rauner easily. But why would he want to be Governor? The Senate job is cushy and the Governor job quite tough and getting tougher?
Comment by Federalist Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 10:58 am
Oswego- A Rauner tax with reforms would be 5 percent-absent reforms 5 won’t be sufficient. I don’t mind rates returning to 5 but you and your kind will need something closer to 8
Comment by Sue Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 11:01 am
Rauner is the prohibitive front runner in any race.
This idea Raubervis so easy to beat is whistling past the graveyard.
It took $60+ million by Rauner to beat an incumbent governor.
Rauner, an incumbent governor, will spend $90-100 million.
“This ain’t not cake walk”
Ugh.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 11:02 am
===but you and your kind will need something closer to 8===
That makes no sense since I never said that, and I’m a Republican, I don’t have a kind unless Raunerite and Non-Raunerites are a kind.
60 and 30. No “Raunerite reforms” unless Rauner gets both 60 and 30
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 11:05 am
Oh, I never actually thought about Valerie Jarrett running for governor. Not sure how I feel about this, but it at least caught my attention.
Fortunately for her, having such close ties to Obama would be a bonus in this state.

@Nick Name
there’s virtually no legal restraint on Senators voting to spend far more money through the Federal Government than they take in. It’s the prefect place fro corrupt politicians. You just borrow insane amounts through the Treasury and have the Fed buy the notes with “created” money if the burden on the economy is too great. YOu stick the bill to future generations and the Social Security funds that they’ve plundered and have no intention of paying back the IOUs they left instead of letting them buy T bills.
State government is different. What you borrow you have to pay back by cutting service or raising taxes, and judgment day comes much more quickly. Can he adapt to fiscal accountability? I think not…

We have to disagree. She is one Democrat who could actually lose to Rauner.
Comment by Federalist Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 11:27 am
This much I’m confident in about 2018- no matter the D candidate, with Rauner’s resources, it’ll be a meat grinder.

Kwame would make an excellent governor but to date, he’s never expressed any real interest in any position other than the one he holds.
He’s always on the list and he never makes the move.
People need to start respecting the choice. If he wants the position, he can tell us.
Comment by Gooner Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 12:08 pm
Durbin is so popular he got blasted in his home county by Oberweis in the Senate race. Rauner will get a lot of donations if he runs against DD.
Comment by Anonymous Monday, Jul 25, 16 @ 12:15 pm
” raising taxes to 8 plus percent”. Was OK at 5% before Rauner’s little tantrum completely ruined the state. And he wanted and got tax rate reduced yet still has no alternantive. TOTAL FAIL.

Dick Durbin…..seriously….we will have more of the same. Dick has done nothing but be part of the “status quo”…….more Madigan garbage……may have to move out of Illinois if this is the best we can do.

2018 Election Prediction - Lisa Madigan announces her plan to run for governor. Mike Madigan announces that he will step down as Speaker if Lisa wins. Ken Griffin donates the max to Lisa’s candidacy and creates an independent PAC to support her run. (Rauner may be a free, but there are bigger wins to be had!) Lisa wins with the largest cross over Republican votes in Illinois history.

I can’t believe that Durbin would want the job; I am not sure that he can beat Rauner’s money. Jesse is just too smart to take the governor’s job at his age. Raul would probably be a good candidate, but again, Rauner’s money would beat him.
Lisa is probably the best bet to beat Rauner, if her dad goes along.
And believe it or not, a lot of people are saying that they wished that they could change their vote to… Unlikely? Maybe. Unbelievable? Probably. But…

My front-brain tells me Rauner will never win a second term with his current approval numbers.
However my brain stem also reminds me that Brownback in Kansas and Jindal in Louisiana were both re-elected after disastrous squeeze-the-beast governance. I know they are red states (especially Kansas), but still….
