A public hearing is expected in the case involving Auditor General Frank Mautino’s campaign expenses after he failed to file amended reports Monday. The Illinois State Board of Elections is seeking amended reports to clarify hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign expenses paid to a bank and service station in his legislative district over the course of a decade.
The deadline came and went Monday for Mautino to turn in amended campaign-expense reports as ordered by the elections board.
That means the elections board will work with all of the parties to find a date for a public hearing in which the complainant will have subpoena power.
Illinois Campaign for Political Reform Chairwoman Susan Garrett said Mautino should be granted due process, but needs to comply with the State Board of Elections’ requests.
“But there comes a point when he has to do that,” Garrett said. “He just can’t hide behind a federal investigation. We want him to be open and honest about what happened.”
I asked Mautino’s private spokesman for comment. His reply: “No comment from us now on this.”

Makes one wonder if he is just attempting to drag out the process long enough so that he qualifies for the convention spike.

Ok, Rich, we’ve given him another two weeks (of course he’s actually had the better part of seven months to provide some answers) and still nothing from Frank…not that anyone who’s followed this matter closely expected any different. Is it finally time for him to step down?

How many years does he have to account for? Who was in charge of his campaign funds (him or someone he appointed)?

Ironically, if he would have kept his seat and continued in the legislature, he would have retired at some time without any consideration of this issue. Frank is a good man, but now he’ll have to answer to the system that he’s bound to uphold.

As suggested here 2 or 3 weeks ago, when folks were saying, ‘ give him the 2 weeks ‘: why bother? He’s had 6 months. Pleaded the fifth. And this guy is STILL auditor general in IL??? Oh, This Is IL, isn’t it.

To the post -
I think we are in resignation territory now. It’s hard to be the watchdog for the state when you yourself have a cloud over your head. How can you be taken seriously when you sign off on a finding when you’ve got your own issues? He needs to resign for the good of the office and focus on his own issues now.

Can’t figure out why he doesn’t step down rather than embarrass himself and the Auditor Genera’s Office. Maybe he is trying to qualify for the higher pension benefits.
