  1. I wonder how they’ll feel when they discover they threw all that money down a toilet?

  2. Bruce made 59 million off interest, investments, and others in 2015.

What does he care if he “loses” 16 million trying to create conditions where he’ll just make even more profits.

Is a government of the rich, for the rich, by the rich.

The American experiment with democracy ended in 2010 with the Citizens United decision.

  3. But I thought Rauner said he was focused on reforms? Sheesh!

  4. Nothing to see here. The Republican Party is alive and well and open to all. /s(af)

  5. Rauner, LLC.

Note that Rauner doles out cash as a pass thru quickly, parking and using the state party as a way station seemingly long enough until Rauner decides abc approves the expenditure.

Raunerites usurped the Party for Raunerism and the Raunerism Agenda.

There’s a 95.02% chance the ILGOP doesn’t exist but as a routing number for money transfers and address so political mailings have a return address and mail endicia.

  6. This is oligarchy and plutocracy–an entire state political party owned by one or a few super-rich people.

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 12:52 pm

  7. Illinois - another Oligarchy in the making.

  8. Will Tronc editorial board ask the Comptroller to both do the math and discuss what it means?

Comment by Keyrock Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 12:53 pm

  9. Not exactly what one would call a Big Tent Party when there’s only one pole holding the tent up.

    Comment by illini97 Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 12:53 pm

  10. Corporatism at its finest.

Comment by Honeybear Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 12:54 pm

  11. People will understandably get fixated on the idea that Rauner is trying to buy everything but I think the more important long-term question is what happens to the Republican Party after Rauner? Illinois Republican non-Rauner fundraising has been anemic, it’s almost as if they’ve stopped trying because they know Rauner’s millions are there. If he loses his re-elect and stops fully subsidizing the party how do they rebuild after letting at atrophy like this?

Comment by The Captain Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 12:54 pm

  12. “Almost?”

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 12:55 pm

  13. I hope that the IHOP politicians who take 1.4% cash know they have to stay bought, none of this getting out of the yard and thinking for themselves.

Comment by Huh? Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:05 pm

  14. My question is this … Why is Rauner spending so much of his own money? Is he truly committed to make Illinois a better place to live for everyone? Everyone being the operative word.

Comment by forwhatitsworth Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:06 pm

  15. The Captain, I was wondering the same thing. What happens if Rauner decides he has had enough and takes his toys and goes home (to whichever of the dozen he has!) They have literally put all of their eggs in the one basket.

Comment by Pawn Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:07 pm

  16. While I’m not trying to diminish the Rauner’s charity/philanthropic history, still WOW.

Comment by wow Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:14 pm

  17. $4M from Zell, $10M from Griffin, and if you do the math, both contributions are less than the difference between 5% and 3.75% of their 2015 “earnings.” Holding the line on the Quincome tax sunset basically reallocated 1.25% of the 2015 income of the #1 and #2 richest men in Illinois from the state to the state GOP. Very Quinteresting.

Comment by Biker Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:20 pm

  18. Politifact/Reboot would find this statement to be mostly untrue.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:32 pm

  19. Rauner wants to talk fair maps, redistricting, and pensions. Note, no mention of campaign finance reforms.

    Comment by Jc19pd2 Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 1:34 pm

  20. =I hope that the IHOP politicians who take 1.4% cash know they have to stay bought, none of this getting out of the yard and thinking for themselves.=

    This. Ballgame.

    Do not leave the reservation.

And it really highlights the hypocrisy of “Madigan and the legislators he controls” shtick.

“Don’t think, Meat, it only hurts the team!”

  21. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. This is not a good thing for Illinois Republicans. They are bought and paid for.

  22. Add Munger’s you gotta be independently wealthy to serve in the legislature and its a complete takeover. Gotta love how rich people fight.

  23. And no mention of the 600,000 Trump voters he insults everyday

  25. “The Illinois Republican Party has raised”

May need new dictionary entry to accommodate new meaning of “raised”. Maybe something to the effect that the Republican party has been injected with or infected with these dollars might make more sense.

Difficult to fathom this “raising” without thinking that some kind of “lowering” is happening here.

Comment by Vole Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 2:07 pm

  26. “And no mention of the 600,000 Trump voters he insults everyday”

Well, admittedly, that is not hard to do. Trump is an insult to basic intelligence and human decency.

Comment by Ron Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 2:15 pm

  27. MrJM wins again.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 2:17 pm

  28. So over 95% has come from Rauner. Are they even trying to raise money anywhere else. Begs the question, once Rauner is gone can they ramp back up and raise their own money?

Comment by Highland Il Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 2:22 pm

  29. - @MisterJayEm -

You went, not only next level, you owned the day.

    Restaurant Quality, well played.

I guess to answer other questions here, what happens when Rauner leaves?

“And then finally, when there’s nothing left, when you can’t win another race from the Dems or build another phony case to present, you bust the joint out. You light a match.”

  30. OW,

“And then finally, when there’s nothing left, when you can’t win another race from the Dems or build another phony case to present, you bust the joint out. You light a match.”

That needs to be the cliffhanger for the Season One finale of the HBO show. Season Two, what rises from the ashes when IHOP has burnt down?

    Comment by illini97 Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:11 pm

  31. - illini97 -

Good idea, but, as I know you watch on HBO, we are in Season 2, but to be fair, Season 1 was a shorter shooting season, fewer episodes.

Season 3 should have a few new characters and a really juicy plot line that will roll out “after the election.”

    To the post,

Maybe the question that should be honestly asked? “At what cost to a party is this good or healthy?”

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:16 pm

  32. To me, the impressive thing is not how much Rauner gave, but how little the GOP got from everyone else in the universe…. about $843K. That’s the State GOP, not individual candidates campaign funds, etc, but still–that’s like rounding error from $-0-.

Comment by Harry Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:24 pm

  33. I guess he really is shaking up Springfield. It used to be you could only rent a politician in this State.

Comment by Whatever Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:46 pm

  34. So the Reps managed to raise $842,688 or 5% of the money they use. That is a hard working fund raiser pace. They are a machine.

Comment by zatoichi Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:51 pm

  35. Why give to the GOP when you know Rauner owns everything.

Comment by Thomas Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:53 pm

  36. Two thoughts on this statistic:

    1. If you’re a Republican, why would you bother making any donations with a sugar daddy like that flashing the cash? I wonder what will happen to the Party when that well runs dry?

    2. Doesn’t this severely undercut Republican claims that Mike Madigan has an iron grip on Democratic politics in Illinois and that’s a bad thing in general? I’m not sure that Republicans can say with a straight face that it will be any different under Rauner if he is able to buy the Republicans control of the Illinois legislature.

Comment by Anon Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 3:55 pm

  37. I thought they said Mrs Rauner was a Dem.

    Comment by Cheyl44 Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 5:16 pm

  38. WOW!!! Even if he picks up a few seats…There’s not a reasonable rate of return on that investment! Accept of course ones own inflated ego…jeesh…spend the money on helping those in need dude.

Comment by Just saying... Thursday, Aug 25, 16 @ 5:50 pm

  39. Campaign finance reform, starting with disallowing donations once they are in session-especially the night before an arbitration bill! /s
