More Rauner TV

Posted in:

* Gov. Bruce Rauner made the rounds of Chicago TV stations early this morning. A WGN anchor asked him: “But the world of business is a dictatorship. You’re in government now. Looking back on your year and a half, is there a political tactic you would have changed to accomplish more of your agenda?”

Rauner’s response

Short answer: No.

* Over on Channel 7, the governor was pressed hard by Judy Hsu: “Your job is to govern and we need a budget. What realistically can be done going forward to find a compromise?” The governor said that the legislative leaders have agreed to work on a compromise and pass a balanced budget with reforms after the general election.

Hsu also talked about the new “heat map” which shows where the social services cuts have happened. “Do you have a real grasp of what’s facing the families?” she asked. His response

Absolutely. And the tragedy is, we have out of balance, um, budgets that are broken and not funding our services properly for decades. This is a problem, this hasn’t happened in the past year, this has been created for many, many years. We always try to spend much more than we really bring in. That makes us the state that people leave the most from. People leave Illinois more than any other state. And our jobs, our employers leave our state. We’ve got to have financial discipline and we need reforms to grow our economy. That’s the number one priority.

* Watch it all

  3. Agenda first.

    The betterment of Illinois?

    The functioning of state government?

    A distant second.

It’s all about the agenda. People are not a concern.

  4. On paper, he seems so smart.
But, then there is the blatant disconnect from the real world. He cannot combine the real world and what needs to be done to come up with a reasonable solution.
I’m not naive and am pretty sure he doesn’t want to come to terms with a solution and that is a different story. He looks silly saying the same thing over and over.

  5. What did folks expect. Rauner has not and will not change so long as he thinks his money will buy him what he needs.

  7. “Change is hard …”

It is. For everyone, including this governor who hasn’t yet figured out he too needs to change — his approach.

Comment by Deft Wing Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 12:22 pm

  8. He isn’t wrong about the need for fiscal discipline, but that is about all he is correct about.

And, what he sees as fiscal discipline is cutting social services and providing corporate welfare.

He also likes to give raises to his superstars for what most people believe is a big zero as far as actual accomplishments.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 12:25 pm

  9. Check out the Governor’s interpretation of the Supreme Court’s rulings on Independent Maps and Term Limits in the ABC 7 interview. It starts at about the 4:15 mark. He states that the Court has ruled that theses issues cannot be done through voter referendum and that it is up to the General Assembly to put them on the ballot so voters can vote them up or down. I must have missed that part of the Court’s opinion.

Destruction in the meantime is entirely acceptable.

  11. He is the least impressive state governor I have ever seen. And come on, can you wear a tie for a TV interview? My husband doesn’t like them either, but he wears them for court, client meetings, seminars, any time he’s interacting with the public. Can the Governor show the same respect for the people he represents?

Comment by Archiesmom Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 12:38 pm

  12. He will go down as one of the worst governors we have ever had. Of course I have said that the last three before him also. ;)

He doesn’t have to, because we don’t frequent the same wealthy social circles as he.

  14. ==Short answer: No.==

So the budget impasse really is a feature, not a bug?

  15. It’s like listening to a relief pitcher trying to blame his string of blown saves on the starting rotation from last season.

Comment by Juvenal Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 12:54 pm

  16. All campaignin’, all the time. Same speech over and over and over again. He uses social service questions merely as a jumping off point for reforms and maps now. I’m glad some harder questions are being asked, but without hardball follow ups that will prompt “last question!!!” franctiness, he’s not going to get tripped up and go “rouge”.

“Can the Governor show the same respect for the people he represents?”

He is showing the people he represents the respect he has for them. In other words, zero.

  19. Ugh… Private industry CEO mindset doesn’t work when you are Governor. The citizens of the state don’t work for you. You work for the citizens. At this point, I doubt he will ever come to that realization. (BTW, in case someone wants to accuse me of slacking, I’m at lunch).

  20. Rauner’s negativity about the state is in a new zone.

After 18 months of badmouthing, does he think he can just change his tune and anyone - businesses, people, whoever - will listen?

Comment by Sir Reel Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 1:32 pm

  21. Doesn’t the governor have the responsibility to present a budget? Didn’t he present a budget with a $2.2 billion credit for his not yet enacted pension reform? If he has a plan for a balanced budget, why doesn’t he present it? He wants to make people suffer so he can blame the other side for leverage to enact his concept of change. Step up and present a real budget and force the democrats hand.

  22. People, he has more money than all of you. And he is smarter than all of you. He is not going to operate or govern according to your rules. He has a new set of rules on how to operate and govern. And the sooner everyone understands that and gets in line, the sooner things will improve. Until then, things will continue to get worse. Totally up to you.

Comment by Henry Francis Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 1:51 pm

  23. Henry Francis, LOL. Very, very funny. You should put a snark alert in your comment. Some folks would actually take your silly comment seriously.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 1:57 pm

  24. - Henry Francis -

    Is that snark, or…

The rules, Rauner’s Rules or the Constitution… Hostages and Leverage or Betterment of the state thru cooperation…

Is Rauner’s Way working… I mean destroying Social Services and Higher Ed, sure, Rauner is winning, but even Crain’s said Illinois is worse off in every measurable way… since Rauner became governor.

So… I’m confused I guess. We should help one man’s agenda at the cost of Illinois, or the cost of Illinois thru leverage destruction?

What are you saying if that’s not snark?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 1:57 pm

  25. People, if you were as smart as the Guv you would realize that my previous comment was snark. Maybe those ties you wear so tightly around your necks are depriving your brains of oxygen. We can all learn from the Guv in that regard.

  29. “The good news is, uh, the legislative leaders have agreed that after the General Election, before the new General Assembly is seated, it will come together get a balanced budget and get reforms. . . We have agreed we’re gonna get this done between the General Election and when the General Assembly comes back in January.”

OK. Rauner and the legislative leaders have agreed to not solve the crisis until after the General Election(which we knew), it will be done before the new General Assembly is seated, and the leaders have agreed both to get a balanced budget and get reforms.

    That’s good news?

“Profanity is absolutely not acceptable in any form.”

    Fudge.

    Comment by 37B Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 2:14 pm

  30. The Cochran interview was very good. Steve says vote for the people who want to fix the state and not protect their own interests

The whole argument about term limits is summed up by the Governor’s comment that for decades the tough votes are taken in a lame duck session by those legislators who are leaving office.

Everyone else is too concerned with getting reelected.

  31. –And the tragedy is, we have out of balance, um, budgets that are broken and not funding our services properly for decades. This is a problem, this hasn’t happened in the past year, this has been created for many, many years.–

No, it is only during the Rauner Administration that there was an executive plan to renege on signed contracts to social service providers, then serve up 35 cents on the dollar after a year of willful deadbeatism.

    – We’ve got to have financial discipline…–

According to the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, Gov. Rauner proposed in Feb. 2015 an FY16 budget with a $4.4 billion deficit. Last February, he proposed an FY17 budget with a $6 billion deficit. This past June, he signed an FY17 budget with an $8 billion deficit.

–…we need reforms to grow our economy.–

Snake oil, as the governor’s own projections — since disavowed, by him– showed. Still waiting on those promised “revised” projections.

  32. LP: One problem with term limits is that you guarantee a certain number of lame ducks who might note feel the need to vote for their constituents.

Honeybear - Is there an update on the September 1st AFSCME strike plans that we have been told about? Picket locations? Inflatable rats?

Before you go tearing me a new one, this is a tease. I know and understand your sensitivity.

Comment by JDuc Tuesday, Aug 30, 16 @ 4:27 pm

  35. “We need reform to grow our economy. It’s the number one priority”. Got it…Education must be number two since he’s funding that by deficit spending, but the poor…well, they’ll always be with us, bless their hearts.

Union busting above social services. That’s Rauner’s clearly-stated priority. Vote accordingly come November. The Raunerites will be easy to pick out. They’ll have the support of Proft’s propaganda disguised as newspapers, and they’ll be blanketing the airwaves with vagues promises of unnamed reforms that will grow jobs … in some future utopia that will only come if they are elected…They also have a bridge in NY to sell you…cheap.
