* Jake Lewis, who’s the “campaign director” at the liberal, pro-union Illinois Working Together group, sent me a link yesterday to a page within Gov. Rauner’s campaign site and suggested I take a look at his boast on pension reform…
REFORMING PENSIONS
Forced entrenched politicians to agree to comprehensive pension reform. The proposed pension reforms could save taxpayers billions of dollars for years to come.

What about the statement is incorrect? The leaders agreed that pension reform must be addressed for CPS to get additional funding.
That is the definition of a Quid Pro Quo.
The fact that Rauner had to “force entrenched politicians to agree to comprehensive pension reform” is an indictment on them, not him.
Senator Cullerton won’t even call his own bill and
said last Spring it made not difference because the matter would be under litigation and not implemented right away.
I can’t see why delaying the inevitable improves things but maybe he can expalin.

Just a thought but perhaps he was referencing the proposed CPS pension reforms discussed at the end of June?! I seem to recall the House and Senate discussing that caveat during debates.

Look at his two achievements when it comes to “creating jobs”. One is making unemployment benefits tougher to get. The other is creating Intersect, which has yet to do anything that wasn’t already being done by DCEO.

The leaders might agree the bill for pensions is huge. They definitely haven’t agreed on actually figuring out how to pay the bill since some of them are still trying to welch on the bill.
Specifically to the Cullerton “consideration” bill, if it doesn’t offer “keep what you have” with no strings attached, it will be found unconstitutional also.
Specifically to CPS, about all the “reform” it looks they can legally do is claw back the CPS pickup of the employee contribution. While the CTU will fight it, Rahm could probably accomplish that if they phased in the claw-back coupled with a matching raise (and that was the only raise in the contract). Not what CPS or CTU seems to want, but it would would be somewhere in the middle.

Depends on who you perceive to be the most vulnerable. In his mind, that would be the threats against the 1%—-those in the 99% looking at their tax burden (or lack of). That makes people like him vulnerable.

Pension reform was already done once. It was called Tier 2.
And I highly doubt that “billions” would be saved with any pension “reform” proposed now because they can’t seem to understand the Supreme Court’s decisions that have said that pensions for current employees cannot be changed.
So, like others, I’d like to see the calculations of these “billions” in savings because I’m betting the assumptions being made for those “billions” include changes that are unconstitutional.

Rauner’s political and messaging teams are incompetent. Mostly second rate hacks from Kirk’s office. This is an example. Either he will figure that out soon and replace them or he’ll go down in flames.
