* I’ve been hoping they’d do an album like this for years. They’re just too old to be rock stars. I loved the “Stripped” album because it was a grownup departure from their usual stadium rock nonsense. Keep it simple, keep it basic and keep it bluesy…
Those who like their Rolling Stones music raw and unfiltered may get their wish Dec. 2 when a new studio album, “Blue and Lonesome,” will be released. […]
Produced by Don Was, who has been working with the band for more than two decades, the 12 blues covers were recorded in a rapid-fire three-day session in London last December. “Blue and Lonesome” includes songs associated with Howlin’ Wolf (“Commit a Crime”), Jimmy Reed (“Little Rain”) and Magic Sam (“All of Your Love”). Eric Clapton adds guitar to two songs: Johnny Taylor’s “Everybody Knows About My Good Thing” and Dixon’s “I Can’t Quit You Baby.”
The Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood — plus sidemen Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Matt Clifford (keyboards) approached the sessions as more of a live recording and avoided overdubs, according to a statement released by the band.
With a few exceptions, they dug a layer or two deeper than the obvious Chicago blues classics on these tracks, reflecting their roots as fledgling blues appreciators who listened obsessively to albums released on Chess, Vee-Jay and other labels imported from overseas in the early ‘60s. As Was said in a statement, for the Stones, the blues is “the fountainhead of everything they do.” That hadn’t always been reflected in their post-‘70s recordings, but it appears they’re doubling down on that commitment now.
Finally.
I’ll take it.

Reminds me of the 12 x 5 era…we had a cool school bus driver that had an 8 track player who played that tape over and over.

Keith’s been pushing this for years.
He’s complained extensively over the years on the canned music Mick insists on at their stage shows so that their same old hits sound the same every time.

Awesome, going back to the roots of so much music. Great to hear the Stones come back full-circle to the music that was so inspirational to them and countless others.

What say? Despite the lack of a McKinley Morganfield song, I’m ready, ready as anybody can be.

Their older blues stuff is phonier than Keith’s bio. The only good thing they did was reference the real blues legend; Willie Dixon, Little Milton and others.

Sorry, I prefer music from this century.

This is how you spend that day before the Cubs begin their World Series victory lap? Everyone loves the Stones, but we think we need more than this.

Not sure if Keef would like the fact that your headline is a Beatles lyric.

“Not sure if Keef would like the fact that your headline is a Beatles lyric.”
I read that the Stones and Beatles were good friends and were like each other as private individuals. The Stones had a different image to stand out and draw a contrast, the “bad boy” image.

I still prefer the Small Faces.

Well last year he called Sgt. Pepper “rubbish” and criticized them as a live act just this past July.

When its on Spotify I will listen to the album, but pay to download it or buy a CD, no I doubt it. Those days are largely over, the Stones probably won’t generate much cash for their golden years from Blue and Lonesome unless they quickly go to the streaming providers. Streaming — whether through paid subscriptions to Spotify or Rhapsody; Internet radio from Pandora; or even videos on YouTube — now makes up 34.3 percent of sales, edging out digital downloads as the music industry’s biggest source of revenue.
