@GovRauner 's correct. Why isn't Madigan out on Twitter & #FacebookLive sharing about the issues from his perspective? It's obvious why not.

  1. The ignorance of not entering the playing field by “Madigan” or House Democrats is so blatantly obvious, people are now calling them out…

    … on Twitter.

    Ironically delicious.

  2. Why isn’t BigBrain governin’ rather than wanderin’ IL doing back slappin’ press events over programs ordered by the federal court. Perhaps Mr/Ms Cashman was dozin’ during the dozens of news conferences ( ya know Questions and Answers, not just pages from the bumper sticker catalogs)Meanwhile some will push to end the BigBrain squeeze

  3. ===…during the dozens of news conferences ( ya know Questions and Answers, not just pages from the bumper sticker catalogs)===

    Annonin’

“The 1991 PR Ideas” called, they want their strategy back.

With great respect, honestly, no decoder ring needed.

This is 2016. A Twitter user asked for a strategy… and there’s no Twitter to even respond to them.

That’s as much as what “wrong” as anything.

    With respect.

  4. The party structure here in Illinois is pretty awful as almost all of the leadership positions are filled by elected officials that frankly have other priorities besides operating a functional and engaging state wide party apparatus.

  5. Mr Cashman will be on bossmadigan.com

  6. This guy is a textbook on how to legitimize class envy. Oy. Drop it, Gov. Not everyone is in your and Speaker Madigan’s position.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 12:58 pm

  7. OW is correct that the issue is in no small part one of appearances: there’s no illusion (and that’s typically what it is, an illusion) of being receptive to input from the constituency.

In the 21st century, that costs you any chance to deliver your side of the message.

Comment by thunderspirit Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 12:58 pm

  8. It is an interesting thought….

What does Madigan and the Democrats lose (if anything) by not engaging in social media they way the governor has? Fewer people read the paper and watch the local news and more people get their news in new ways. With reductions in staffing by news outlets in Springfield traditional media is covering state government news less and less.

If you don’t have this sort of content up on Facebook than people can’t share it on Facebook. Complain about all you like but it is where lots of folks get their information about the world now. Ads are nice, but I would suspect content shared by friends will gets more views.

Comment by Oneman Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 12:59 pm

  9. Illinois does not have a statewide Democratic Party. It has a Democratic Party that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the House Democratic campaign apparatus and it is focused on keeping the Illinois House in Democratic hands. This is why Sen. Durbin and the county chairmen had to build their own voter database. This is why there are no coordinated campaigns that are not Illinois House focused campaigns. Madigan is the chairman of DPI, Kasper is the treasurer. /frustrating

  15. “Why isn’t Madigan out on Twitter…”

I don’t think he owns a smart phone. But he might think that a tweet used to describe the vocal output of a bird while today it frequently signals the presence of a birdbrain.

Comment by CapnCrunch Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:32 pm

  16. It is instructive to remember Madigan claims he doesn’t own a cell phone. He exists quietly and under the radar purposefully. He wants power, not attention.

Good governance may require the use, even sporadically, of technology to help inform the electorate … but that’s anathema to a person wholly interested in power, rather than good governance. And Madigan doesn’t give a hang about what the people of Illinois want; only what he wants.

Comment by Deft Wing Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:37 pm

  17. The people of Illinois want a balanced budget and 2 years in, Rauner has yet to propose one.

Comment by Markus Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:45 pm

  18. ===It is instructive to remember Madigan claims he doesn’t own a cell phone. He exists quietly and under the radar purposefully. He wants power, not attention.===

I would never equate no cell phone to not wanting attention.

Does the cell phone blink like a highway sign, drawing attention? Whistle?

    That part… makes no sense.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:45 pm

  19. CapnCrunch is correct, Speaker has no cell http://abc7chicago.com/archive/9130032/

Comment by No Cell Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:48 pm

  20. Gee, maybe because there is no actual Democratic Party in the traditional sense. No message. No Twitter. No FB. Why not engage on social media? Because you first would have to know what social media is.

Interestingly, when you type “Democratic Party of Illinois” into Twitter, Lou Lang’s account appears. Nice land grab there Lou. When you search on FB, it comes up with a notes that says “this page is automatically generated based on what Facebook users are interested in.” The “automatic” FB page has 498 followers. This is so pathetic I can’t even begin to fathom.

  21. ==I don’t think he owns a smart phone.===

Or even a dumb phone, or any phone without a cord and a hold button.

    Comment by A guy Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:53 pm

  22. People paying attention understand his shtick. Madigan is no more interested in a budget deal now, then a pension deal then.

    http://abc7chicago.com/archive/9130032/

Madigan is THE problem with State of Illinois.
Many know this, and more will come to know this as the non-stop campaign for 2018 rages on.

Comment by Deft Wing Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:53 pm

  23. The Speaker isn’t on social media because he doesn’t care about his popularity. He cares about his power, and as long as he wins his district and the vote for Speaker, that is all the popularity he needs.

Comment by Not It Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 1:54 pm

  24. ===Madigan is no more interested in a budget deal now, then a pension deal then. ===

Um, he did do a pension deal after that. Kinda blows your particular theory outta the water.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 2:03 pm

  25. ==People paying attention understand his shtick==

Just as they understand the Governor’s shtick.

==Madigan is THE problem with State of Illinois.==

He is A problem but he isn’t THE problem. Enough with the partisan hack arguments.

  26. ===Or even a dumb phone, or any phone without a cord and a hold button.===

    A phone is a measure of… what?

So if someone has a cell phone they’re smart?

There’s enough evidence out there with “cell phones” and “smarts”… or lack thereof

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 2:12 pm

  27. Not correct.

The pension deal got done in the fall session of ‘15 … after Madigan’s hide and go seek game.

So, my “theory” remains: Madigan is all about power so transparency about his opinions, Illinois governance, and the like is never going to come from him.

Comment by Deft Wing Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 2:13 pm

  28. ===The pension deal got done in the fall session of ‘15===

    Um, last year? Under Rauner?

No. Quinn signed the bill into law in December of 2013 http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/12/05/quinn-signs-pension-reform-plan-into-law/

    Now, go take a nap.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 2:15 pm

  29. Over the past several weeks, I have called and have had rather lengthy discussions with some involved in differing capacities with the Illinois Democrat Party. Especially about the downstate results of a month ago.

The races that were impacted had little to do with the candidates, but rather the perception of their candidacy by the media and the public.

I used to think, and still do believe, that the Dems have the better ground game when it comes to traditional GOTV efforts, but the message is being lost.

I have to admit I got very little satisfaction that the “messaging” would improve. It was convenient for the blame to be put on the Rauner Millions and the negative campaigns being run.

Willy is absolutely correct — “The 1991 PR Ideas” called, they want their strategy back.

Initially, I thought that the Rauner press shop was out of its league and disengaged from reality, but may well have proven themselves to be far ahead of the curve and far smarter than I initially gave them credit for being.

Comment by illini Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 2:15 pm

  30. Illini,

“Ahead of the curve” in this context means in the 20th century. It’s pathetic and it’s starting to bite.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 2:18 pm

  31. @Cynic - OK, probably should have chosen my words more carefully.

  32. =Does the cell phone blink like a highway sign, drawing attention? Whistle?
That part… makes no sense. =

In 2016, many people use cell phones more for non-calling type things (twitter, fb, ig, etc).
IG doesn’t even really work on a desktop, many people rarely or even never use their computer for fb or twitter.

No cell phone = little or no online presence.

Additionally in the case of Madigan, he’s only found when he wants to be. Because you can’t call him when he’s not at home or in his office.

    Comment by m Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 3:03 pm

  33. Kinda better to have no tech than to “reset the password”, get hacked, and be had. Or better, have offline PCs and online PCs.

Comment by James Knell Thursday, Dec 15, 16 @ 5:46 pm

  34. = Madigan is no more interested in a budget deal now, then a pension deal then. =

Madigan passed “Tier 2″ state pension plan in 2010. It was signed by Governor Quinn.
