  1. So, the subtext (probably not what Rauner intended — although it might be) is:

“Look, there’s all this. We don’t really need a budget.”

Comment by Bobby Catalpa Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:51 am

  2. If Rauner gets credit for the inmate population going down, does he get credit for the crime rate going up too?

Comment by Terry Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:51 am

  3. Love the 1st video thumbnail and wondered about the charges for kidnapping the budget hostages. Hope to hear more about that in SotS.

Comment by Cold of Winter Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:53 am

  4. Hmmm…. Common thread…all BigBrain achievements due to Legislative actions…maybe not so bad

Comment by Annonin' Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:53 am

  5. Keep up the nice graphics to distract from the abysmal failure and unprecedented financial meltdown.

Comment by Handle Bar Mustache Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:55 am

  6. Wow, and all this time I had thought Roosevelt was great for all of his New Deal achievements.

    Yawn.

Comment by illinoised Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:55 am

  7. This is “better” than the ridiculous “stats” screens that scream to the “Never mistake activity for achievement”.

    Much better messaging here…

  8. One more omitted fact:

    THE LEDGER BILL BACKLOG 1/19/2017
    $ 11,457,052,303

Comment by Omay Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:58 am

  9. My read is that no one is putting any pressure on him to address the bill backlog, lack of budget, human services disaster or labor issues. He can get away with touting increased spending in these circumstances.

Comment by Earnest Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:07 am

  10. Wow, great job Bruce! You know what I noticed has been happening. Just this morning I had to stop into Walmart to grab some coffee ( labor sisters and brothers who are judging me because I went to Walmart can bite me. When you pay my bills then you can tell me where I can shop. I’m tired of the neoliberal privilege. ) but you know what I have been noticing which was stunning this morning at 6:30? The overwhelming majority of Walmart night shift re stockers were middle aged or older. Like 80%. That is a bad bad sign. Fixed income and a single job aren’t cutting it. Then there is the elderly man who bags groceries. He’s walking to work at 6:30 when I’m coming back from taking the girls to early bird classes at the high school. He’s to old to drive and wears a reflective vest over his coat. It’s about a mile walk for him.
In addition 51% of our school children in the state need free or reduced price lunch.
People, I live in one of our better off communities in the Metro East.
So great job Governor your achievements are amazing to us. S/

  11. How does the administration square the decreasing prison population with the increase in violent crimes. Tread lightly here.

Comment by Wilson Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:15 am

  12. Terry, that struck me as odd, too.

Rauner pounded Quinn in the campaign for early-release. Here, he’s bragging about the prison population going down when murders have spiked.

Candidate Rauner would have scorched Gov. Rauner on that.

“Pat Quinn is failing on violent crime,” Rauner said. “We have got to change that, and he’s got to come out and explain why he’s failing, and we’ve got to turn this around.”

Perhaps Gov. Rauner would like to come out and explain why he collapses into a shivering fetal position when anyone dares to ask him about the Chicago homicide spike on his watch.

  13. Pardon, 10:16 was me.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:33 am

  14. Does this also correlate with the reduction in state police numbers?

Fewer local dollars to fund local police because the state hasn’t paid it’s bills or forwarded taxes collected on behalf of those localities?

I mean, you know, this might not be a good sign of positive change.

Comment by Anon Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:35 am

  15. ==Terry - Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 9:51 am: If Rauner gets credit for the inmate population going down, does he get credit for the crime rate going up too? ==

Not in his book. He blames everyone else for the increase in crime.

Comment by MAMA Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:36 am

  16. Anon @ 10:16 and MAMA

Yeah, I’m not sure what to make of this. Is he creating an opening for a Dem candidate to attack him from the right? Would a Dem even want to do that?

We live in strange times: A Republican in Illinois looking to empty prisons, a Republican in DC looking to end free trade.

Comment by Terry Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:42 am

  17. “Proposed” school funding may be up, but actual funding probably isn’t. Since they have paid zero (0) Mandated Categorical Funding real funding is probably down. Even if they paid what they said they would pay in MCATs, Transportation has been slashed by 54%.

Maybe he could show us a receipt or something?

Wow, weigh to step on a b-s talking point with truth and reality. No way you’re being invited to the next Frat Boy bro-down.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 10:58 am

  19. How is he going to reconcile a 15% increase in school funding while allowing the income tax rate to sunset?

Comment by Jocko Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 11:05 am

  20. @Wordslinger- The bro-downs sound fun, but I will get by! I have never looked good with my shirt off playing beer pong.

Comment by JS Mill Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 11:06 am

  21. >Wow, weigh to step on a b-s talking point with truth and reality.

Nicely done both of you. My concern is: if truth and reliability aren’t picked up by the Illinois Democratic Party and made into consistent talking points, do they make any sound? I wish it were so.

Comment by Earnest Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 11:27 am

  22. @Cold of Winter:

I noticed that too, although I read that as a creative way they chose to increase the numbers of substitute teachers - kidnapping.

  23. Honey@10:14. Exactly. Exactly why labor is doomed. Exactly why 2in 5 households voted for Rauner. exctly why AFSCME is doomed. United we stand. Divided….

Comment by blue dog dem Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 12:11 pm

  24. Bbd I think you got a little fixated on my side comment and not on the meat of the message. But let me tell you why I think we will soon see the signs of the Second Coming of Labor. It is because the plight of the average worker, which actually is typified by Walmart employees ,is going to get so bad that folks will come to embrace labor after the inevitable disillusionment with Trump/Rauner who were supposed to save them but actually screwed them harder. Watch not the President. Watch what congress does to hardworking folks. Both sides of the aisle are at fault federally. Now in Ilinois you and I disagree about who is at fault but regardless, I don’t see things improving at all for the average employee. That is organized labors chance. It is my faith that the time will come. It is also my calling

  25. If the Democrats had an effective messaging operation, they could be tearing these tweets apart with graphs showing all the problems that Rauner and his people in the General Assembly have caused.

  26. ===If the Democrats had an effective messaging operation===

Hey now. They’re far too busy tweeting out a SERIOUSLY IMPORTANT video of Lou Lang made last week talking about entering his 16th term in office. I kid you not:

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 1:44 pm

  27. Honey. It is because labor has become dependent on government And laws to fight our battles, that we have forgotten how to fend for ourselves. As soon as you let dollar signs get in the way of principle, you have lost the battle. The Raunerites know this. Corporate America knows it. Stay strong in your convictions, but remember, you are not the first, nor will you be the last to do without at some point in your life.

Its a dumb comparison, but how fast do you think that Oreo production would come back to the states if every union household boycotted them. It won’t happen because WE won’t do it.

We might boycott an entire state when.5% of the population wants transgender bathrooms, but if we can save a $1 on a tee shirt, we turn a blind eye.

Not all union folks are hypocrits. But I am afraid that the vast majority are.
