Today’s quotable

Posted in:

* Rep. Chad Hays (R-Catlin) to Tom Kasich

Hays was even skeptical of Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s move last Thursday to ask a St. Clair County court to lift an order that pays tens of thousands of state workers despite the lack of an approved budget. Lisa Madigan said she did it in order to force a long-sought budget deal.

“The speaker’s daughter (Lisa Madigan) could have done this any time in the last two years,” Hays said. “This is about how daddy wants to be in charge.”

But maybe Lisa Madigan is like most of the rest of us and is tired of watching Springfield stall while it should be working. Maybe she wants to push legislators, including her father, and the governor to get going on a budget deal before the clock runs out on a court injunction on Feb. 28.

Or maybe I’m wrong and Chad Hays is right.

  1. Tom Kasich is right. Unfortunately, it won’t work since the crisis can be averted by simply appropriating money for employee pay and nothing else. The money is coming from somewhere, it just needs to be made official.

  2. I’m not sure it’s because of her dad. But Lisa should have moved to enforce the law immediately.

  3. ===“The speaker’s daughter (Lisa Madigan) could have done this any time in the last two years,” Hays said. “This is about how daddy wants to be in charge.”===

Mr. Hays is now nothing more than a Kass lackey and a Rauner lemming.

The sheer lack of respect shown here by Mr. Hays probably speaks more to his own character that to the political point he thinks he’s trying to make.

I’m sure it felt so good saying it, that’s why Mr. Hays fails here and fails in looking to find a way out of this mess. But, Kass and Rauner are pleased, so that’s good.

  4. You are right Rich.
Lisa said in an interview that she waited 2 years to give the governor and the legislature time to pass a budget. After they did not pass a budget for 2 years, she (not her father) decided it was time to act.

  5. The Attorney General can make her own decisions. The timing here, though, gives ammo to those who constantly suspect coordination. I do not, though I also think the idea that the AG and the Speaker never talk shop is naive. Yes, this issue was ripe much earlier.

  6. i wonder what Rep Hays mommy and daddy have him doing?

Comment by DDR Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:02 pm

  7. How incredibly insulting to the AG.

That kind of “daddy” commentary is below the dignity of her office and yours, Chad.

  11. == This is about how daddy wants to be in charge. ==

Okay, Chad. Let’s say that’s true. Isn’t then also true that your paycheck being held up because your daddy, Bruce Rauner, wants to be in charge?

  12. It makes one wonder if Mr. Hays thinks women always defer to their… lemme look so I get this right… that’s it… “daddy”… and women just aren’t qualified…

… even women elected to multiple terms, statewide.

    Hmm.

  14. Is there something about Republican officials that makes them unable to convey their thoughts without being petulant children?

Comment by AlfondoGonz Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:10 pm

  15. July 2015 -June 16- we were paid under the order of the court, something she went to court about.

July 16-December 16- we were paid under a stop gap budget.

Seems to me this is the first appropriate time for her to initiate this action.

    Correct?

Ugh. Is there ANY republican that you don’t bash OW? You claim to be a republican but all you do is bash republicans that speak out against Madigan(s) and/or unions.

  18. I’m sorry, when did people start listening to Chad Hays?

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:20 pm

  19. In the conversation with Mr. Kacich I indicated at least six different times that we need a budget - NOW.

What think g person doesn’t wa t this to end?

Oswego Willy - you know NOTHING about me. You are making a character judgement based on an eighth of newspaper article that doesn’t contain most of what the conversation was about?

Strong women define my life - stick to what you know for sure. Which as it relates to me is next to nothing.

  20. “The speaker’s daughter (Lisa Madigan) could have done this any time in the last two years,” Hays said. “This is about how daddy wants to be in charge.”

Mr. Hayes - exactly what context could you add to this comment that would make it less offensive than it stands at this moment?

Comment by Name Withheld Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:26 pm

  21. Chad, I love you, but you said what you said. Doesn’t matter if it was a few words in a much longer interview. Those words are yours.

  22. ===Is there ANY republican that you don’t bash…You claim to be a republican but all you do is…===

The only way your critique works here is if you approve what Mr. Hays said.

    Do you?

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:29 pm

  23. Rich - If you are going to run this nonsense at least use the quote that is more fun. LOL

When asked about the “deal” in the Senate, I suggested that it was likely DOA in the House as the Speaker gets touchy about his hand being forced. My quote was “It is kind of like Dirty Dancing . . . .nobody puts baby in a corner”.

    Better.

Comment by Chad Hays Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:33 pm

  24. Mr. Hays,

Those nine words show disrespect to the AG and are unbecoming of a State Rep. This isn’t about political affiliation, this is about common decency and decorum. The fact that you chose to defend your character as opposed to apologize for your poor choice of words says a lot about your…character.

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:36 pm

  25. Happy to see Rep. Hays has joined us. Perhaps, and unfortunately I say this without irony, the internet can teach him a thing or 2 about decency.

Comment by AlfondoGonz Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:39 pm

  26. Yep. If you don’t think the Madigan family is conniving and talking about the path forward that best suits them I cannot help you.

You run your blog and let Rich run his, huh?

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:44 pm

  28. To the original post: Yuck. How condescending, to reduce a person to merely an outgrowth of their parents. I’m sure it’s especially galling for a woman.

Comment by Arsenal Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:45 pm

  29. Chad, we all miss Patrick Swayze, but that quote is not more fun.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:49 pm

  30. Does anyone on the left think that Rauner didn’t talk with Munger or that their staffs at least didn’t? What would make one think that the Madigan’s don’t do the exact same thing? They play politics. All of them. I wish they would play governing but to think that there is no coordination between those on the same side so to speak is just daft!

Comment by Big Muddy Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:50 pm

  31. I am really, REALLY tired of seeing such blatantly patronizing and dismissive language being considered acceptable political commentary.

OF COURSE Lisa Madigan talks to her father. I would hope she talks to her father from time to time. I suspect that politics even rears its ugly head in those conversations. So that means that our Attorney General is in the complete thrall of her father, and does not make any move that he has not approved? If it was not so insulting, it would be laughable. She has proven herself to be capable and independent, and the people of Illinois seem to be able to recognize this, having re-elected her to her position by significant margins in 2006, 2010, and 2014.

[Cutting what might have been construed as a gratuitous insult here. But by playing this card in this way, Rep. Hays is being the more commonly-used name for a male donkey].

Comment by Mr. Smith Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:53 pm

  32. Yes, it actually is more fun.

Life is too short to be perpetually insulted. Bill Maher is right on that front.

    Gotta run. Carry on.

Comment by Chad Hays Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:53 pm

  33. Rep. Hayes, the first amendment protects your right to say any foolish and/or thoughtless thing that you think. It does not protect you against the reactions to and consequences of those words. You yap it, you own it. And it was very insulting to women.

Comment by RIJ Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 12:55 pm

  34. My critique of Mr. Hays, and what you think you are calling me out on is…

===“The speaker’s daughter (Lisa Madigan) could have done this any time in the last two years,” (Chad) Hays said. “This is about how daddy wants to be in charge.”===

You made a point on my “choices” of “bashing”

    I then stated…

===The only way your critique works here is if you approve what Mr. Hays said.

    - Big Muddy -?

    ===Yep===

You’re fine with those words? “Daddy”, the daughter reference, not unlike Kass?

You’re ok with Mr. Hays’ words?

    Um, ok.

  36. ===Do you need a safe space?

We have become a world of cupcakes===

If you feel denigrating women by referring to things like “daddy”, that’s a character flaw in you, not a cupcake world you think exists.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 1:01 pm

  37. Chad, um, no, it’s not.

And I really didn’t take you to be such a big fan of Rod Blagojevich. You do realize you’re stealing his stuff, don’t you?

June 2004: When Attorney General Lisa Madigan nixed Blagojevich’s attempt to sell the Thompson Center to help balance the budget, Blagojevich accused her of doing her father’s bidding.

  39. “We need a budget - NOW.”

Just not exactly right now. Not today, either. Maybe next week? Nah, how about next month? Okay, let’s say June. Well, maybe not June; that’s pushing it. Maybe October. Oh, wait, an election’s coming up in 2018! Better wait until that’s behind us.

While Rep. Hays is quoting Dirty Dancing, I keep thinking of a quote from The Naked Gun: “Wilma, I promise you: whatever scum did this, not one man on this force will rest one minute until he’s behind bars. Now, let’s grab a bite to eat.”

    Comment by tobias846 Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 1:10 pm

  40. While Lisa’s at it, shouldn’t she be filing an order to force our non-govenor to submit a Balanced budget or be in violation of our State Constitution or be removed?

Comment by Retiree Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 1:14 pm

  41. Sorry, that should have read “and be removed from office?”

Comment by Retiree Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 1:24 pm

    Stay classy my friends.

  43. It wasn’t even mentioned that Hays pulls money from his campaign fund to make up his salary and does an IOU until he gets paid. If only we all had slush funds

Comment by Almost the Weekend Friday, Feb 3, 17 @ 2:22 pm
