One in four Illinois residents are confident in their state government, the lowest among the 50 states by a significant margin. Rhode Island (33%) and Connecticut (39%) join Illinois as states with less than 40% government confidence. North Dakota residents are the most trusting; 81% say they are confident in their state government.
One in four? Who are these one in four? I’d like to meet just one of them. Seriously. I’d love to talk to a single person who is confident in Illinois’ state government.

There is a strong positive relationship between residents’ ratings of their state’s economy and their confidence in state government. In addition to Illinois, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey and Kansas all rank among the states in which residents are the least positive about their state’s economy. North Dakota, Utah, Minnesota and Nebraska are four states in which residents rate their state’s economy positively and express high confidence in their state government.

Illinois and Rhode Island tie for the lowest rating of current state economic conditions, at -15. Illinois residents are most negative about the direction of their state’s economy, with Connecticut and West Virginia close behind.

Almost 75 percent of people who live in Illinois say they have zero confidence in state government, according to a new poll.
Gallup asked 500 Illinoisans if they have confidence in their state’s “government in general.” An overwhelming 74 percent said no.
State Rep Tom Bennett says the only people who may be surprised by that are lawmakers in Springfield who want to keep trudging down the same road.
“We’re spending millions of dollars more than we bring in every day. It’s almost like it’s not real in some ways,” Bennett said of the lack of awareness at the Illinois Capitol. “It’s going to come to a head one day.”

I lost confidence. I love Illinois, grew up here and have wonderful friends and family. I love the Lincoln heritage, which led to a long stint living in Springfield, still spend a lot of time there.
My wife and I have decided to leave the state. We have a plan which has been delayed once due to family reasons, but have set a new departure date. I am proud of having worked to better the lives of disadvantaged citizens, but embarrassed and embittered at what I have seen out of Springfield, especially the last two years. Illinois is broken, and not only financially.

To the Post,
Couple real things I see, hear, think on this poll.
1) I believe it, and I’d like to meet at 25% too, which leads me to..,
2) Tens of millions spent denigrating Springfield, by both sides at times, and the continued monies driving that narrative.
3) A Governor, a sitting governor, bad-mouthing state government, state workers… there’s a constant brow-beating by an actual constitutional officer degrating the state, when most (every one but the current one?) look to positive stories and putting the state they lead in the best light possible.
4) Those that rely on the state making their undisputable beefs. These beefs, like not getting paid for Cripes Sake or other failures allow any and all narratives have significant weight as they parallel the loud noise of the Bad.
5) Schools. They can be grade schools, “Chicago” schools, rural schools, new schools, old schools, even university schools, they all have the same beef, “the state”. Children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, any student, every student hears about the funding issues and see the state poorly, let alone adults and others.
6) Counties, cities, all munis… same as schools, social services, etc.
See a pattern here?
No one seems to find ANY good.
So, who are these 25%?

Yep, it will come to a head… and this “enlightened” 25% will be absolutely dumbfounded as why their taxes are going up and how long it will take to dig out.

State government in Nebraska garners 74% confidence. Wonder if it’s related to the nation’s only state unicam? What would happen if Pat Quinn put Cutback Amendment II on the ballot to eliminate one house and create a unicam?

Anon, Nebraska is a remarkably homogeneous state.

Umm…look at the date. The Gallup release is from February 2016, and the poll was conducted during 2015.
So not fake. But old enough to be meaningless.
So congrats to the IPI news service for reporting on something over a year old.

Our state government is the worst. Rauner was our only hope. Most of Illinois economy is in shambles, but Chicago is booming.

This may cause a flap, but I gotta tell ya (and this may say more about my unavoidable social circles than anything else)…most people I know, if they pick up a newspaper at all, pick out the ads and sports page and throw the rest away.
Seriously, some of the most content, at peace people I know, know nothing of politics at any level.
Long way of saying: There’s your 25%.

IPI is gaslighting state workers by implying that the public doesn’t support them. Truth is that we aren’t striking to please the public.
We’re striking to fight against the constant unfair labor practices, and to stop the outsourcing of all our jobs to companies that will no longer have to justify saving the state money. Total unaccountable outsourcing. Like the Chicago parking meter fiasco. The state will get to do this for all positions and functions. Disastrous.
But that’s what Rauner wants

I guess that 25% are the ones not concerned about the $11 million being added daily to the backlog of unpaid bills owed by the state, the decimation of social services agencies contracted with the state and the total destruction of all of Higher Education.

The only ones happy with our state government are government workers because they enjoy inflated salaries and extremely generous benefits, all at the expense of the rest of us.

I take umbrage with the depiction of Nebraska. Typical big city ignorance. Insurance is a massive source of employment there (ever heard of Warren Buffet?) Telecommunications is big– Gallup poll headquarters, Kewitt Corporation (builds skyscrapers– international company).
Omaha has a sizable black and hispanic population and Lincoln is 5th in the country for resettlement of refugee populations.Multiculturalism is celebrated and seems to be much more positvely acknowleged there than here where everyone backs into their own little corner in self imposed segregation. Not so in Omaha.
Having a relative who lives in NE, I can tell you that it is an uplifting place to live (and visit) People are so positive and upbeat, it’s depressing to return here to Illinois. The state functions and works well. I always thought that a big part of it is that it is a much smaller population. Unemployment is around 3% or less. There is nothing that Chicago has that Omaha does not. Opera, Symphony (granted, no professional sports teams), art museums, world class zoo, etc. All the same old franchise operations here and there.
The stereotype of cattle ranchers is what old timers might think of, probably because they’ve never set foot out of this great(ha) state that works so well for all of us. /s Get out and take a look around before stereotyping.
