Or: Increase Minimum Wage –> Higher paying jobs lead to more spending and less debt - increasing economic growth –> Economic growth causes a natural increase in state revenues without increasing taxes, which leads to a stronger and more efficient state government –> Stronger and more efficient state government leads to increased investment in social service agencies with fewer demands for services –> Stronger and more efficient state government also leads to more equitable funding for schools with less reliance on property taxes –> A Balanced Budget

In Leader Durkin’s diagram, I don’t see that there is an arrow between “A Balanced Budget” and “Economic Development…” As the financial experts recently told us, there certainly should be and in fact is a connection between a balanced budget and economic development. So why not start at “A Balanced Budget” to get this virtuous circle going. A balanced budget is not the end, it is the beginning.

The governor and the GOP legislators he controls are holding out for anti-working-class policies that they believe will spur the “Economic development” in Leader Durkin’s diagram, which will in turn increase wages.
Why not start with increasing wages?
More people voted for an increase in the minimum wage than voted for Governor Rauner, and yet it hasn’t happened.

Baloney. Minimum wage hikes decrease demand for labor and increase consumer prices due to higher labor costs.
