In anticipation of today’s event with working families at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399 in Chicago, the Pritzker campaign released the following video to share why members of the labor movement are standing with JB.
The event, of course, is Pritzker’s endorsement by several trade unions.

The good thing about endorsing Pritzker is they know he won’t be bugging them for money like one of the other candidates would if they got endorsed.
It’s win-win - Pritzker gets an endorsement and unions can keep their powder dry for the general

That’s just about as good as you get in modeling a video targetable and married to an endorsement to a group and solidifying why that group is with that candidate, and to make clear that the candidate and the group are seeing the goals the same.
Lots of people, talking, speaking yo their concerns, hopes, fears, wants… and the candidate… they are all together… and in the end, working for a “better Illinois”
It’s just about as good as you can get.

Very good video, if a little long. What I like best is Pritzker inserting the union angle early. Rauner has caused so much harm to the state in his quest to shove down, wages, benefits and working conditions of many thousands of workers, and to strip their rights.

It’s better, but it’s still long and boring…nothing compels you to hang in there with it. On the very positive side, the logo is excellent and to the point. If they get enough equity in it to make it easily recognizable and understandable, they’ll make some headway. If you see enough of this logo next to the union home signs around, it will multiply the understanding. That’s groundwork. They should do it.
In the meantime, better video, specifically, better editing will help. Not everyone needs to say something. You can check off a lot of targets with video, sans audio, and rotate in speakers from different interest, ethnic, and societal groups. You’ve got millions. Tell the story over time. For labor families alone; this rates better. But it’s still too long and too boring. They can catch a tighter message than this. Try them.

This is certainly a timely complement ad to the trade unions’ endorsement. So that shows his rivals that the Pritzker campaign team is on the ball and locked in to/managing outside events. OTOH, it may not help all that much with those middle class voters who see it as fluff or ” JB in bed with unions” which can actually be a problem for candidates south of 1-80.
Not sure about this one. I think his ads have been quite good and impressively inclusive so far. This one perhaps not so much. Maybe it’s a little too early still for JB to be ex-cluding groups of Dem voters he’s going to need.

You may be right of course. But as someone who has lived, worked, and observed the surroundings both in rural Illinois and in Suburban Chicagoland, with no disrespect intended whatsoever, I can say for sure that unions are not as universally revered as some on this site posit. That is worth keeping in mind.

It’s fleeting…but there’s a moment they drop the “compassion” card in this video…I hope that’s a harbinger of future jabs at Rauner. That seems to be an area that can ruffle his feathers and break his otherwise robotic adherence to his message.

So, middle class downstaters who tend to vote in the Democrat primary will not vote for a Democrat who supports unions? I get that well to do Democrats up North may feel that way, but downstate? Show me some polling. I’m not buying it.

@doubt- @Responsa makes a good point. South of I-80 unions are viewed differently. Especially in rural communities that do not have large groups of union workers.
Peoria, Champaign, and Decatur and metro east are probably exceptions where unions are still well regarded.
It can backfire.
I am still not convinced there is a billionaire out there that cares much about the little guy or the middle class.
Nice to have somebody that can oppose Rauner’s money, but Pritzker needs to do a lot of convincing for this center/right voter (social progressive, economic conservative) to vote for him.

@doubt–we are discussing the primary here where there may be several Democratic candidates for voters to choose from. This is about some unions supporting JB over other candidates and why they might, not about whether JB supports unions in general. There is a difference. I believe Rich asked the class to rate and share our opinions on this particular ad which I have done. It is OK if you don’t agree.

Also on cue 47, did you miss the part where I offered some positive thoughts and very much unsolicited advice that could possibly improve it?
My preference is known to you and many others. That doesn’t prevent an honest review. He asked for a rating. That was my cue. Apparently your cue…was my answer to his.

A little boring and would be better for Pritzker to speak a little on why he believes in unions. The one thing he’ll need is a bit more personal testimonials from people who go back with him. Right now, it’s fairly cookie cutter still.

Good video. But middle class schmiddle class. How many politicians are going to keep championing the “middle class” and then stick it to them.
Does anyone even know what middle class means anymore?
If there was a Trump - a - like candidate for Gov in Illinois they would wipe the mat with all these guys.

The video was really long. The tone was positive if you stayed with it and did not tune out.
The Hyatt Hotels have had a somewhat strained relationship with their own union workers, including a four year struggle over a contract.
The workers complained of low wages, long hours, and a lack of respect on the job. I am not sure if this past battle reflects upon J.B. or his relatives in the family business.
Was it necessary for the union leader (Brian Hickey) to remind the audience that J.B. lost a Congressional primary with the union endorsement twenty years ago?
