Wynes to challenge Schneider in CD10

Posted in:

* Republican Jeremy Wynes launched his congressional campaign today against 10th District incumbent Democrat Brad Schneider. He’s hired two consultants connected to Gov. Bruce Rauner: Mike Schrimpf and Chip Englander.

Press release…

Jeremy Wynes today launched a campaign to bring new leadership and fresh ideas to Congress for the people of Illinois’ 10th District.

It’s clear that Jeremy has the right background and vision to bring bipartisan balance back to the district. Last year, incumbent Brad Schneider was one of the most underperforming Democrats in the country, running nearly 10 points behind the top of the ticket. Additionally, a Republican has won Illinois-10 in every mid-term election since 1978, and the district has changed political parties every election since post-2010 redistricting. In 2018, Illinois-10 is poised to again show its independence by rejecting Brad Schneider’s partisan politics in favor of the bipartisan leadership exhibited by Jeremy Wynes.

About Jeremy:

Jeremy understands what it means to take risks and sacrifice to set the foundation for the next generation’s success. He grew up in Illinois learning the meaning of hard work and understanding the value of a dollar. His father ran the family’s farm and worked as a laborer to help make ends meet. His mother has worked three decades as a pre-school teacher.

When he wasn’t busy captaining his high school football and basketball teams, Jeremy spent his youth on the farm and working a variety of jobs to help his family. During the summers, he worked in his father’s small pool installation business and roofed houses and barns for neighboring farmers. During the winters, he helped his uncles chop and deliver firewood to local homeowners.

He took out student loans and worked his way through Illinois State University. In 2002, Jeremy became the first in his family to graduate from college with a four-year degree. Originally intending to pursue a career in law enforcement, Jeremy was inspired by an internship at the public defender’s office to attend DePaul University College of Law, where he graduated with a J.D. in 2006.

After two years in private legal practice, Jeremy began his public-policy career as a director in the Chicago office of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), an internationally-respected advocacy organization dedicated to the bipartisan pursuit of a strong relationship between our country and our ally Israel.

Jeremy spent 7 years traveling across Illinois and other Midwestern states advising and working with both Republican and Democratic lawmakers for bipartisan U.S. foreign policy outcomes — like crippling sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran — while educating and inspiring hardworking Americans of all races, religions and political affiliations to engage in shaping United States foreign policy.

Concerned with the lack of U.S. international leadership, sluggish economic growth and lagging wage gains, in 2014 Jeremy launched a Chicago office for the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), a non-profit organization committed to a strong national security and fiscally conservative economic policies. During his time at AIPAC and the RJC, Jeremy helped lead the fight in Illinois against the disastrous Iran nuclear deal, efforts to isolate our allies and empower our adversaries, and the dangerous foreign policy of an America that leads from behind on the world stage.

Lesley, Jeremy’s wife of 9 years, was raised in Highland Park to parents who ran small family businesses. A graduate of the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School, Lesley currently serves as an assistant dean at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University while also managing her own small legal-education consulting business and the demands of raising a family. At the heart of the Wynes household are Lesley and Jeremy’s three young children – Jaclyn, 7; Isaac, 5; and Noah, 2.

* James Slepian produced his new video. Slepian ran Bob Dold’s campaign last year. So, I suppose this means Dold isn’t running again. Rate the video

  1. He certainly has the right message and tone to win this district next year. Solid announcement.

  2. Grade: B Too long, could have hit the key points quicker. Lots of B roll on areas of concern, cut those clips out and you have a better video. Cute family, wife, kids, dog -what no kitten? Solid piece

  4. Another year, another IL10 Republican who’s spent his career electing Republicans pretending to be an “independent.”

James Slepian, Chip Englander aren’t exactly the kind of people you’d hire if you were really “independent..”

Comment by lcthundercat Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 10:51 am

  5. He literally worked to elect Republicans in 2016. But he’s independent! Bipartisan! Yeah, good luck with that.

  6. Too long, his voice drops a lot, he doesn’t seem interesting or interested.

I think we knew that at about 3am on the 9th of November…

  8. As for the video: D+
    Painfully awkward cue card reading.
Nothing distinct about IL-10. Could’ve been shot anywhere.

Comment by Anon Nice Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:10 am

  9. In a Clinton midterm, he would win. In a Trump midterm … enjoy threading that needle in that district. There’s plenty of Republicans out there, but Trump was about the 9th choice for most of them.

Comment by PJ Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:10 am

  10. They really are perpetuating a myth about the 2016 results. Here’s the deal: Dold and Munger ran almost even there. Duckworth did a little better. So, actually, Republicans crossed over for HRC, Democrats didn’t cross over Dold and Munger. Trump underperformed, Schneider didn’t. But they gotta do what they gotta do in a district that’s slipping away from them.

Comment by MythBuster Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:14 am

  11. I think it’s a quite good introduction of an unknown candidate in the 10th district. I think it’s a good, calming message that will resonate with many in the 10th. Vicious partisanship has never played well here and until recently (when national politics got so ugly) the political affiliation of one’s neighbors, casual friends and business associates was of far less concern than other life factors and shared experiences. It was a better, less judgmental time that many 10thers would like to see again.

Comment by Responsa Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:15 am

  12. Jeremy “I can’t read my” Wynes very well.

Comment by PurpleDog Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:16 am

  13. We all know what’s going on here. Dold would have run again if Trump had lost to Hillary but with Trump in the White House, Dold is smart enough not to fight the inevitable reelection of Schneider.

Does anyone really think that the 10th is going to elect a Republican in this current climate? Dold’s decision tells you all you need to know.

Comment by slow down Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:21 am

  14. C- Too long, too much B roll, too all over the place. Not sure running mainly on foreign policy will fully work in the 10th. And do you really want your first election to be linked to the sinking ship Rauner.
    Take a lap.

Comment by JTF Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:23 am

  15. One question- Does he support Trump or is he in the Rauner camp of “He Who Shall Not Be Named”?

    Comment by Anon221 Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:26 am

  16. He checks the boxes you need to check for the 10th. Video’s ok, not great, but it gets the job done. Attractive guy and family. Very much in the mold of Republicans who’ve had success there. It’s a race for sure.

    Comment by A guy Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:26 am

  17. I hope Wynes sets an example for his opponent and releases his tax returns.

Comment by Goober Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:27 am

  18. Good choice to spit the Jewish vote. Democrats did well in Highland Park and Deerfield in November and April. A lot of the voting seemed to be along party ideals, so this may be an upward climb. Schneider has spent a lot of time in the community getting input about health care, an issue very important in the 10th.

Comment by Barrington Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:28 am

  19. Schneider is clearly unimpressive and a back bencher, but as others note the climate is wrong to oust him this cycle.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:29 am

  20. As others have pointed out, the 10th ain’t gonna flip for a Republican with Trump in the White House.

  21. ==Does anyone really think that the 10th is going to elect a Republican in this current climate?==

It’s very much possible, yes. But, your point that Dold passing on this race is sort of a no-confidence vote is well-taken.

Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:30 am

  22. My first thought was, who? I tried reading the press release to find out who but if there’s anything interesting about this guy it buried the lede. If you want to win a targeted congressional race you need to start doing endless fundraising calls to people who’ve never heard of you and your opening has to be better than “well, I was the captain of my high school football team …”

Comment by The Captain Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:31 am

  23. ==== One question- Does he support Trump or is he in the Rauner camp of “He Who Shall Not Be Named”? ====

Where did Jeremy Wynes work during the 2016 campaign? Which presidential candidate did Jeremy Wynes’ GOP PAC support?

When IL10 Republicans say they’re “independent”, look at their resume.

  27. ==- G’Kar - Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:44 am:

Sincere question from a non-insider. What is meant by ‘B-Roll?’==

It’s the ancillary footage that doesn’t include the featured person; the video containing image montages with voice over or music in the audio portion. There is a lot of B-Roll in this video, and most of it is very good. B-Roll helps get inclusion messages across and further develop the persona.

    Comment by G'Kar Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 11:57 am

  29. @a guy @G’Kar
Political B-Roll is supposed to reflect the individual race. Slepian failed to capture the 10th District which is why the video itself fails (in addition to JW’s awkwardness).

Comment by Anon Nice Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 12:03 pm

  30. In fairness, Dold could just be tired at this point. You’re in; you’re out; you’re in; you’re out again … It’s a weird life to live. Let someone else ride the merry-go-round.

Comment by ZC Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 12:04 pm

  31. Anon-N,
Wait for it. It’s coming. This one’s an introduction and it’s already long enough…Let the burden of your observation fall on another video coming to you soon. The people in the district know where they live. This video is to introduce a guy that most of them probably don’t know.

    Comment by A guy Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 12:11 pm

  32. A guy,

Some questions people in the district may want to know about Wynes:

    1) Why did you help elect Trump?

Comment by anon Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 12:17 pm

  33. @A guy Absolutely no indication of which district he’s running in. It could’ve been shot anywhere. That’s generally terrible, especially when the strategy for Republicans in that district is to localize the race. Not a good start for them.

Comment by Anon Nice Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 12:27 pm

  34. ZC, the last thing Dold wants to do is permanently go back to his Dad’s pest control business and move on from politics. He’s sitting this one out because he’s smart and doesn’t want to take on a fight he can’t win.

  35. Lot of discontent over Schneiders vote on Obamacare repeal I hear.

Comment by Blue dog dem Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 12:38 pm

  36. What does that background have to do with the north shore? He should move back home to challenge Bustos or his wife should be the candidate here.

Also nice announcement totally ignoring the Trumpcare elephant in the room. I’m sure people terrified of losing coverage because of pre-existing conditions or discrimination against women’s health thanks to Republicans are just desperate to flip this seat. Yeah bet votrs in the 10th are just desperate to replace their already pro-Israel Congressman with an AIPAC lobbyist who will be a rubber stamp for Trump’s anti-woman anti-environment anti-blue state agenda.

Someone ask Jeremy if he approves Trump’s elinimation of the deduction for state/local taxes. Real north shore winner there.

  38. BDD - “Lot of discontent over Schneiders vote on Obamacare repeal I hear.”

From whom? The 10th has one of the highest numbers of hospitals in any congressional district in the country. It also has Abbott Labs and Abbvie and all of them opposed repeal and communicated as such to their employees. The 10th has a larger 50+ population now than it did in 2012. There are more Democratic Township elected officials than ever. Schneider and Sam Cunningham are friends. He’s reached out to and completely mended the fences with Rotering.

The only discontent you might hear regarding Schneider’s vote on Repeal is from hard R’s who are discontent, period. The 10th has changed since Dold was elected. It changed again when Trump was elected. It changed again after the muni elections.

The only way for a Republican to even have a chance this round in the 10th is if they are a bolt of lightning. This D+ video and Wynes’ silly press release offer barely a spark.

Perhaps by then Trump will have offered Wynes a better job in the administration. Gotta believe someone in Wynes’ position would consider it after all Wynes did to help elect Trump last year.

  45. I always thought Bob Dold was a really decent guy. If he has decided to hang it up or sit it out, more power to him. If he was told that he wasn’t getting backing and they wanted to run this guy instead, that’s a shame.

  46. – Lot of discontent over Schneiders vote on Obamacare repeal, I hear–

Sure you do. The House bill has 31% approval nationwide. I doubt that the 10th is a bulwark of support for it.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, May 9, 17 @ 10:05 pm

  47. Republicans aren’t serious about winning the race. It’s no coincidence Rauner’s people are running it–the goal is to not lose by 20% because Rauner needs to stay close in the 10th to win.
