* I received this photo earlier today…
* Along with this text message…
The Senate janitors told me that they have to take the trash to the Stratton now because the dumpsters were just removed because state didn’t pay? Might want to check
I’ve since seen some tweets and Facebook posts about it.
* So, I checked with Secretary of State Jesse White’s spokesman Dave Druker. The SoS controls the Statehouse, so they’re in charge.
Dave told me that the contract is expiring with the current garbage collection provider, so it’s now removing its dumpsters. The new provider, which submitted a lower bid, is starting on Monday.
In the interim, janitors will have to take the trash to the Stratton Building.
* It would’ve been a great story, though.
*** UPDATE *** I’ll bow to popular demand and make this a caption contest.

I wondered about that. It would have been a nice photo op to set garbage outside Governor Junk’s office.
Comment by 360 Degree TurnAround Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:29 pm
So hey. Is it really “expiring” or the provider isn’t renewing the contract for non-payment?? Had this same thing happen at state office I worked at previously (not CMS run). I don’t buy the easy answer.

What will make a great story is how much more they have to pay the new vendor. Anyone doing business with the state now will be jacking up their prices to account for the unknown of how long they will have to go without being paid. That is costing hundreds of millions of dollars as well.

Someone should have Photoshopped the dumpster with flames coming out of it from all areas.
Comment by Curl of the Burl Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:34 pm
Smalls - not if the winning bidder was the nice man in my neighborhood who rides a bike with a trailer and steals people’s recycling for cash trade-ins. He would have easily offered a cut rate!

I’d also like to know the name of the contractor who took that business deal with the state. “Let’s see…so you say I won’t get paid for two years…you say no budget is in sight…I’ll take it!”
Comment by 360 Degree TurnAround Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:37 pm
I can’t imagine why any rational businessman would sign a contract with the State of Illinois given the current situation. I must be missing something.
Comment by Guzzlepot Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:39 pm
All I’m saying is if this was New Jersey and Tony Soprano handled your waste, budget or not, you “probably” pay that bill.
Another reason it’s better not to be “TV’s New Jersey”

Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Jun 28, 17 @ 2:47 pm
The contracts should have cancelled for nonpayment. And there should be no new contract when there is no budget.
The pile up of paper would have made a great image of the amount of waste going on with no budget. And it would have hit all leaders and both parties. Too bad it did not happen that way.

This is a little off topic and I do apologize. But, in Rauner’s “focus” interview with Amanda Vinicky, I found it to be oddly reminiscent of Matt Frewer’s depiction of Max Headrom but without the glitches. Does that make him Bruce Guvjunk?

Memo: To All Employees
From: Bruce Rainer, Governor
Due to the current fiscal crisis, new contracts for trash disposal services have been declined by the various local vendors which the State has had long standing relationships.
Effectively immediately, as a condition of your employment, you will be required to take home and dispose of in your personal garbage cans, the contents of your waste baskets using the plastic bag that is currently in the container. You will return and reuse the plastic bag. Should the plastic bag be rendered ineffective, you are required to supply a properly sized plastic bag to line the waste basket.
Each office manager will set up a schedule whereby each employee will also be responsible for disposing of trash from communal waste baskets and garbage cans.
Each building manager will establish a schedule whereby each employee will be responsible for disposing of the contents of garbage can in such areas as break rooms or cafeterias.
Disposal of hazardous materials will be handled in similar fashion.
If you have any questions, I am sure that Speaker Madigan will be able to answer them in a reasonable time frame.
Don’t bother trying to grieve this with the unions, they have already decided to roll over and not fight this issue. They just want your illegal union dues and fair share fees.
If you don’t like it, go down the hall to somebody who might care. Because I don’t care about you or what happens to the State.
Have a good day and God bless you in the time of uncertainty and fiscal crisis.

P.S. Don’t try to dispose of State of Illinois trash in municipal garbage cans or at the local gas stations. They were wsrned in advsnve because Madigan some how for a draft copy of this memo and leaked it to the press.
