* Earlier today, Gov. Rauner told reporters that he would do “everything possible” to stop his budget vetoes from being overridden. He might want to check in with his wife. This press release is from Illinois Action for Children and Mrs. Rauner’s Ounce of Prevention Fund…
Over the long holiday weekend, the Illinois General Assembly worked in a bipartisan manner to end the unprecedented budget impasse, passing a full-year budget for FY2018 and the revenue increases needed to fund that budget. The governor vetoed the bills and the Senate has voted to override that veto. We strongly urge the House of Representatives to now follow the Senate in voting to override the governor’s veto.
The approved budget — the first full-year, fully-funded budget since FY2014 –provides significant funding to early childhood programs including Preschool for All and Prevention Initiative, home visiting programs, the Child Care Assistance Program, and Early Intervention.
We applaud the members of the General Assembly in both parties who took the tough vote to try to end this impasse. We hope the House can take one more important vote to move Illinois forward.
While it will take some time for early childhood programs to rebound from the impasse, with this override, we are relieved that early childhood programs will be able to shift their focus to rebuilding their programs, providing vital services for children and families, and planning for the future of those children and families they serve.
So, apparently, Diana Rauner is a Speaker Madigan “subordinate” and a supporter of our “broken” system.
Man, what a weird state this is.

The belief that Diana’s political viewpoints should fall in line with her husband’s is a classic and unbelievably sad example of sexism.

Diana Rauner just last October put her own name to $9 million to be used to defeat Democrats.
Explain that way, get back to all of us.

True. Mostly just highlights the absurdity of Rauner’s position — he can’t even convince the person closest to him, and in theory most sympathetic to his interests, that he’s in the right on this.

Didn’t she say that Bruce doesn’t have a social agenda? Other than the destruction of our social services, that is.
Comment by Anon E. Moose Wednesday, Jul 5, 17 @ 3:02 pm
Diana Rauner looked us all in the eyes and told us repeatedly that “Bruce had no social agenda.” The result, the state’s social services system has been decimated by the Governor.
So don’t tell me its sexist to assume that Diana would support her husband on his veto. She’s been willing in the past and has sat silently as her husband has made a mockery of her statement to us when he was a candidate.

Rauner used his wife’s political views as a Democrat in his 2014 bid for Governor to make himself seem more moderate and palatable for a section of moderate suburban voters. He made her political views fair game; not anyone else.
And honestly, it doesn’t matter to me what gender the Governor and First Spouse are. You just don’t expect a spouse to so publicly go against at such a critical time.

=Diana Rauner just last October put her own name to $9 million to be used to defeat Democrats.=
So since she used money to defeat her husband’s political opponents, she therefore must go along with him on every political issue. Hmm makes sense.

Don’t argue like a child. This is the biggest moment of the governor’s entire term in office and her group just turned on him. This ain’t some little dustup. Did you not read what he said today? He’s in a fight for what he believes is the very soul of the state and the Ounce wants him overridden.
Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Jul 5, 17 @ 3:11 pm
Not only did Michael Madigan defeat him in the political arena — now, his very wife has betrayed him. These must be dark, lonely nights indeed for our state’s chief executive.
Comment by Snucka Wednesday, Jul 5, 17 @ 3:15 pm
Don’t know why we’re responding to a member of the Gov’s press shop incognito, but…
Diana vouched for her husband and convinced a lot of Democrats that he would be a reasonable alternative who would fix the state. She has given him cover and in return the gov has favored her group. Now the group she heads is challenging him at the most moment of his tenure as Governor. Pretty straight forward and not the slightest bit sexist. Nice try.

With respect, it is arguably professional malpractice if the Ounce fails to advocate for an override. Obviously awkward to have to take a polar opposite position from your spouse in such a public forum, but Mrs. Rauner owes it to the Ounce to make her best effort to get funded.

Does anyone besides me think that Rauner wants the overide so he can, as usual, blame the “32% percent tax increase” on Madigan while maintaining his purity on the issue. I don’t think those Senate Republicans, many from districts with universities, bucked the guv without his blessing. He really doesn’t want the albatross of catatrophically failed state and Governor Junk tied around his neck going into the 2018 election. It’s all theatre, albeit Grand Guignol. Our local Repubs are being hailed as heroes for their heroic vote. You just can’t make this crap up.
Comment by Scholar Athlete Wednesday, Jul 5, 17 @ 7:05 pm
Scholar Athlete - A number of people have advanced this idea. The governor knows that he needs a budget and can’t get nearly enough “reforms” in return to justify the carnage. That’s why he keeps moving the goalposts and won’t accept solutions that give him 90% of what he wants. A “Madigan” tax increase gives him some needed breathing room. But it’s not an accomplishment to run on and governors need accomplishments.
Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Jul 5, 17 @ 7:53 pm
Yes, Scholar Athlete. Yes we do.

I’d be okay with Diana R switching party affiliation from Dem to Repub and primarying her spouse if she wants to make this more interesting. Heck, I’d even be willing to chip in a few bucks to cover bumper stickers: “Diana, the Responsible Rauner.” This would leave their dog with an awful dilemma, however…
Comment by Anonymous88 Thursday, Jul 6, 17 @ 5:42 am
This seems pretty simple to. Governor vetoes the budge and not raising taxes, Mrs Governor says to override the veto which would mean increasing the taxes. Who the voters going to blame for the increased taxes..the legislators and not the Governor. Great running platform for 2018…He’s not responsible for raising your taxes.

I’ve always been fascinated by couples who SAY they can put politics aside from their personal lives (e.g. James Carville and Mary Matalin). I wonder if they have a “no politics at the dinner table” rule or something, because it seems like it would be difficult for either one of them to be married to someone who is so obviously wrong all the time.
