An “unblemished” record of “decency, civility, and candor”

Posted in:

* From the “think tank”…

.@capitolfax tell Steve Brown aka wordslinger that if he cared about the democratic process he’d get his boss to change his House rules

— Illinois Policy (@illinoispolicy) July 13, 2017

It should go without saying that Wordslinger is a frequent critic of the House Democrats’ messaging. He ain’t Steve Brown.

Sheesh.

* The poor darlings were apparently stung by this Wordslinger comment on a story yesterday aimed at them

If I could be radically candid, don’t tell me your problems, tell me your solutions that you can accomplish through the democratic processes as set forth by the Constitution and statute.

You’re in an action position now, not a coffee klatch. The taxpayers are compensating you very well. Get to work.

So, apparently Speaker Madigan is to blame because they couldn’t get their own budget plan passed. Yep. All on him and those darned rules.

  1. How petty, to go after a random comment. Isn’t there something better they can do?

  2. oh no you didn’t!!!!! messing with someone who comments here, and someone as respected as Wordslinger, is not just mean, petty, and ridiculous, it will now mean more scrutiny than ever.

  3. Congratulations Word!
Getting called out by the IPI should be considered an honor.
The national equivalent of getting called out by Dick Cheney on DOD issues.

  4. IPI taking the Trump civilized approach at tweeting and running the government I see. Off to a great start

Comment by Baloneymous Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:08 am

  5. What part of the “democratic process”, pray tell, does IPI want changed? The House rules, and the way Madigan uses them, are not popular with liberals. But would a change in rules allow Rauner’s ideas to flourish? Which ones? Who would be for them?

The fault lies not in the stars, IPI.

You act like you have no place in government.

  6. So THAT’S why there was no word on the the flooding. It was obviously wordslinger’s fault.

Comment by Cheesy Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:21 am

  15. Wordslinger demonstrates on a very regular basis that he has limited knowledge of people and process. Steve Brown knows people and process better than almost anyone. The only similarity between the tow is that they are both spend their days spouting Madigan talking points.

  16. Don’t they mean “Pate Philip’s rules” ?? /s

Comment by Smitty Irving Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:21 am

  17. It’s well known around these parts that - Wordslinger - repeatedly goes after the Democratic lack of messaging and especially the HDems 1970s stylings that never keep up with Raunerism messaging.

    - Wordslinger - is the gold standard here, calling out any and every one failing the state and the politics within the governing, be it for praise or criticism.

The IPI might use their own time better figuring out how to tamp down the rhetoric on their Facebook page instead of falsely and purposely “guessing” who - Wordslinger - is to push a narrative.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:22 am

  18. That was kind of pathetic of IPI to tweet something like like, compounded since it’s wrong. I assumed they thought more highly of themselves not to act like that, even if they were the only ones.

Yes, but not in electronic form, the ilga.gov website debuted with the 90th General Assembly. Speaker Lee Daniels’ House rules for the 89th General Assembly should be available in book form at the State Library.

  25. I think Word can defend himself. No worries there.

Back on the message though, steering away from all this messenger drama…

“change his House rules,” is a very obvious problem in the Illinois House. This is part of Drury’s appeal; he went against this undemocratic nonsense.

Anybody want to defend Madigan on his domination of the State via his House rules?

Comment by Mongo Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:35 am

  32. PB, I know enough about people and process that Rauner could have put a brick on the tax increase bill for 60 days and then spent his millions pounding GOP legislators to keep them in line before an override vote.

Instead, he asked them to stay in town to act on his veto immediately.

From your knowledge of people and process, what was his true objective then?

Funny, I don’t remember those criticizing Madigan’s rules criticizing Pate Philip, who created that version of the rules.

Comment by Smitty Irving Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:42 am

  37. I was tired of Obama saying he inherited a mess 6 years in. You were elected because we believed your plan to fix the mess was better.

We elected Rauner because he sold his plan to fix it better than Quinn. I suspect had he disclosed part of his plan was to get Mike Madigan to not be Mike Madigan Quinn would still be Governor.

This is very important. The only relevant question for the current candidates is, “what is your plan to deal with Madigan.” work with him, around him, without him…maybe, but change him. Right next to my plan to get the Mississippi to flow South to North.

  39. ” Doesn’t excuse them at all, but he adopted the rules of his GOP predecessor”

What was that line from last week…? “Persuasion” or “intellectual persuasion,” is what Madigan practices to maintain complete control.

Regardless, it’s not right. Of course it’s among the many not right things on both sides, and has most likely been a root cause of great damage to Illinois over the decades.

GOP should keep banging that drum, day in/day out.

  41. I know this has been mentioned before, but IPI and the governor’s office it controls, continues to operate on the mistaken belief that if somehow Madigan was gone, they would easily get to 60-30 and pass all the legislation they want. As long as they stay in the dream world, they will fail.

    Comment by G'Kar Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 11:45 am

  42. For the feckless privileged intellectuals of IPI, the thought of actually being held accountable for real production is terrifying.
It’s so easy to criticize. Wordslinger put one right between the running lights; Hit their hidden fear of impotence. They don’t know how to do the doable because they don’t live in the real world. They live in their own fantasies.
Fire all state employees? Not the real world. Fantasy
A budget of all cuts? Not the real world. Fantasy
Unblemished record of decency and civility?
    Not the real world. fantasy.

IPI you are about to get radical reality
You gonna learn the hard way about
    Doing the doable

  54. Actually I believe the rules originated with Pate in 2002 and Lee Daniels adopted them in the house in 2004.

Comment by Captain Ed Smith Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 12:32 pm

  55. Actually, the rules started in 1983 under former Speaker George Ryan. Prior to that, especially in the House, things were more haphazard and messy. It wasn’t unusual for the DOT Appropriations bill to have more than 100 amendments filed, and each amendment was heard and voted on during Second Reading. Sometimes it took more than a day to move a single agency appropriation bill. While Speaker Ryan’s rules changes did tighten the grip of leadership over the legislative agenda, it also brought more order and structure to the House. As Senate President Pate Philip followed suit in the 1990s as did Speaker Daniels.

Speaker Madigan hasn’t made that many significant changes, but where there is a dramatic difference is that individual members really don’t know the Rules as well as they should. There are ways to use the Rules to one’s advantage, but one needs to really study and practice them.

  63. Attacking commentators doesn’t change the fundamental problem that Rauner has. He has never proposed a real budget nor has he ever proposed any way to achieve his list of goals. Perhaps if Dunkin and Drury (I’m a former federal prosecutor) had voted to override Rauner’s first veto, Rauner would have realized that he needed to work in a bipartisan fashion since he lacks the votes to go at it alone. Certainly, being the minority party should be a clue that attacking the majority endlessly might not lead to success in government. Off to a great start; missing the flooding and attacking commentators on a blog. Inspiring.

Comment by Trapped in the 'burbs Friday, Jul 14, 17 @ 2:56 pm

  64. The two wrongs make a right justifications for Madigan’s rules are a glorious example of exactly why the Democrats massively failed when they had complete control for 12 years. The Democrats have become such a cult they won’t even hold their own leadership accountable.
