Hey Rich,
Check out this tracker footage of a confused Kennedy speaking to the 40th Ward Democrats in Chicago on Thursday. Kennedy is bumbling trying to talk about taxes, and stumbles his way into saying he wants taxes to go up. Not a good look for the self-proclaimed Democratic “reformer.”
* Kennedy does stumble at one point (bad brain freeze and switches from one tax idea to another), but his overall point is actually in synch with Gov. Bruce Rauner’s own 2014 campaign pledge: A tax on services, including on attorneys…
Man, that guy has real trouble on the stump. Painful.

Raising taxes isn’t inconsistent with reform, though I am usually suspicious of people who advocate “broadening the tax base.”

The streak remains in tact. He’s just proven to be incapable of putting together 2 good days in a row. The stump isn’t his place, and not enough people are seeing him to get used to his awkward style enough to get used to it and forgive it.

I’m totally against narrowing it, which is what the GA does just about every year. Some politically favored group or another (often senior citizens) is always getting another tax exemption. That leaves fewer people to pay for what must be spent.

I would think the ILGOP would be sympathetic to the difficulties of extemporaneous public speaking, given The Boss’s stumblin’ and bumblin’ when he wanders off script.
I mean, this whack-a-doo ramble was just last Friday.

We wouldn’t have to broaden the tax base on the working poor and middle classes, if we just fairly taxed ag property and implemented sales tax on ag supplies. It is no longer mom and pop farms. But deep down i know our two party monopoly political system in Illinois can’t bite the hand that ‘feeds’ them.

BDD. What do you consider a fair tax on at property? The little patch of ground I own pays about 6% of its rent in property taxes. The net rent is taxed as income, now at almost 5%.
Most of the property tax goes for schools, but it takes about 2000 acres to support a family. The number of school kids per section is way down from my youth.
Business expenses are generally not hit by sales taxes. Why treat ag supplies differently?

Last bull moose. The old widget factory, comprised of less than 7 acres, 60×120 pole barn. Paid $17k annually. Didnt support my family exactly 1/2 the years i owned it. Still got that bill. Every year.2000 acres at $150/ acre cash rent it and get out of farming.

Great idea-on a state and federal level. Cut the number of deductions/loopholes and lower the rates. Help put some CPA’s out of business and make it easier to file our taxes..

How many people worked at making widgets? Expect it was more than work the farm. I am trying to match needed services against taxes.

I’m not *against* broadening the tax base, it’s just that most guys who talk about that go on to push some pretty regressive tax ideas.

He is as smooth as sandpaper and way too wonky but Rich, I am starting to wonder if you are losing a bit of objectivity with him here. Does a bad answer filmed on what appears to me a Motorola Razr warrant a banner headline on the most important news outlet in IL politics? I personally don’t think so.

We need progressive taxation. We’re almost assured not to get it because of our terrible state constitution. Would a tax on services be progressive in effect (do rich people buy a greater percentage of services, not just greater total dollar amount of services, than the middle class or poor)? I think it might be but I’d far from certain.

Last Bull Moose. I hate the concept of property tax. But all I ask for is everyone treated the same. Ask a steelworker who makes the raw product for farm equipment if he gets laid off a year, if his property tax bill still comes in the mail. Ask the steel mill that has sat idled a year if the factory still gets a bill. Govt is supposed to treat everyone the same ,I thought.
