Posted in:

* Who?…

Burr Ridge doctor Robert Marshall just announced he's running for gov, 9th candidate. Wants to legalize marijuana and gambling in Chicago. pic.twitter.com/QMiolNBolL

* Marshall was a Burr Ridge trustee from 1989-1993, ran for Congress as a Republican in 1998 and lost to Bill Lipinski in the general, then ran for US Senate as a Democrat in 2010 and got 6 percent of the vote and ran for Congress as a Democrat last year in Peter Roskam’s district but got stomped by Amanda Howland in the primary.

* From his 2016 Daily Herald questionnaire

What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?

Dividing the State of Illinois into extra states, specifically 4 separate independent states. We should do this to increase our political power at the Federal level and in the Electoral College.

Ending the so called “War on Drugs”. Marijuana should be legalized on a nationwide basis. State and local municipalities can choose to opt out of this program if they so choose. Treatment programs should be expanded for drug addicts.

Decrease Medicare age to 62 and also start a dental program for seniors comparable to the Medicare program.

Increase the minimum wage to $15.00, require two weeks of paid leave.

  1. He’ll get more votes than Daiber (assuming both make the ballot).

Among no names, the better name gets more votes & Marshall sounds vetter than Daivlber.

  2. He gets bonus points for being what the other candidates are not: succinct.

  3. Which of the four states does he want to be governor of?

Comment by Montrose Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:19 am

  4. Uh, he’s serious about dividing the state? Is that even legal? Also, what lines does he want to split us up by? Like Cook, Collar counties, Northern Il and Southern IL? I just don’t understand.

Comment by Perrid Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:19 am

  5. Pretty basic Dem platform.

I love everything but the dividing the state thingy.

  6. “I’m running for Governor so I can destroy the State of Illinois as you know it. With your support, I will be the last Governor of Illinois, but there will also be weed”

  7. Is there any chance that Rauner is having some influence in adding candidates to the dem field?

Comment by Saluki Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:27 am

  8. Too bad he’s not a former assistant U.S. attorney.

Comment by Northsider Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:29 am

  9. Wonder if he’s got the time and energy to do this because:

    He’s lost patience. OR
    He’s lost patients?

  10. More evidence that weed really isn’t as harmless as some try to claim.

Comment by just sayin' Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:30 am

  11. Great just what we need.

    Four Statehouses
    Four Govs Mansions
    Four State Fairs

But think of the fun the GOP would have having four Speaker Madigans to bash.

  12. Doc, may want to stick with medicine. Just sayin

  14. Which one is he, the one at the podium or the one sticking his head out of the wall?

Comment by DE Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:40 am

  15. But how would we divide all that pension obligation? Cook County too big to fail?
at least we would have legal weed to lower our anxiety. Crazy, that’s what it is.

Comment by Tequila Mockingbird Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:42 am

  16. Tell me this isn’t the same Dr. Bob Marshall who also ran for governor in ‘90 - I think as a Republican.

Comment by Linus Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:46 am

  17. Break il up! Now that’s divisive rhetoric.

Comment by hexagon Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:51 am

  18. Congress would need to approve breaking the state into four states, as per Article IV of the Constitution. Admitting you want to do it for strictly political reasons is a surefire way to make sure they never ever would.

Comment by Anon Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 11:55 am

  19. Well this is another example of a real deep thinker running for office. When I say deep, I mean like the Mariana trench deep. Way out there, and somehow thinks he has some good ideas. Kind of glad he isn’t my doctor.

Comment by Retired Educator Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 12:02 pm

  20. Where I’d Lar America First Daley when we need him?

Comment by DuPage Saint Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 12:15 pm

  21. ““I’m running for Governor so I can destroy the State of Illinois as you know it.”

I think that platform was already taken by the current occupant.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 12:25 pm

  22. Linus: he is the same.

    Comment by Cromulent M. Biggens Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 12:27 pm

  23. “think of the fun the GOP would have having four Speaker Madigans to bash.”

Not so sure it would work out that way… assuming the split was into four symmetrical quadrants or was Cook-Collars-N IL-S IL, at least two of the new states would likely be “red” states similar to IN, KY or MO and therefore have GOP controlled legislatures….

Comment by Secret Square Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 12:29 pm

  24. How can you be Governor of 5 different states at once?

Comment by Leatherneck Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 12:50 pm

  25. How about another doctor, David Gill for Marshall’s Lt. Gov candidate?

Comment by Leatherneck Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 2:15 pm

  26. There have been several “serious” plans to split states up, usually to benefit a rural, often conservative, population that feels dominated by a big metro area. Eastern Colorado, eastern California, Northern California, etc. And here was me rooting for Puerto Rican statehood to get 2 more Dems.

Comment by Jibba Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 2:17 pm

  27. If you did split IL into 4 states based on mostly equal population, you would have one made mostly of the city of Chicago (2.7 mil), another for the rest of Cook County (2.7 mil), the remaining collars (3 mil), then the rest of the state (about 4 mil). How many Ds and Rs?

On another note, we have 45 counties with populations less than 20k (2012 census), less than a million people in almost half of our counties altogether. Talk about an inability to maintain services like roads or schools without outside help. And I’m a downstater.

Comment by Jibba Friday, Aug 11, 17 @ 2:40 pm

  28. I spy lots of bitter downstaters who don’t want to pay for their own roads and schools when the north of I-80 slop spigot turns off. Just be honest. You know you’d be nothing without Chicagoland.
