Why no response to Coulter?

Posted in:

* Mark Brown

Gov. Bruce Rauner took to Fox News Channel on Friday for what was billed as his first national television interview — and it backfired badly.

Leading a parade of bad reviews was right-wing commentator/provocateur Ann Coulter, who told her 1.6 million Twitter followers that Rauner “either is retarded or playing retard.”

“His answer to every Q is, “Our system is broken.” Fascinating!” Coulter tweeted during the governor’s interview with FOX News host Bret Baier.

Notwithstanding her completely inappropriate and offensive slur, Coulter was on point in calling out Rauner for his evasive answers.

* Tribune

The word “retarded,” once ubiquitous as an insult, is now widely considered offensive.

A spokeswoman for Rauner declined comment.

The word is also banned here, so don’t use it.

* My point is the same as what I told subscribers today: Rauner’s mental health director sent out a press release scolding Senate President John Cullerton for saying that he didn’t send SB1 to the governor right away because of Rauner’s “mental state.” So, that earned a rebuke, but Coulter’s slam was allowed to slide.

Odd.

  1. Rauner thinks he’s in the big league, but he doesn’t know how to play ball.

Comment by Dome Gnome Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:43 pm

  2. They actually believed putting him on a National network, where the questions were guaranteed to be centered around Trump, was a good idea? Best Team In America.

Comment by Anonymous Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:46 pm

  3. In skimming the transcript he uttered the word broken at least 9 times.

Comment by Cable Line Beer Gardener Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:47 pm

  4. Shout out to the crack research staff at Fox News for citing an older version of SB31, and highlighting parts that didn’t end up in the final version.

Comment by Anonymous Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:49 pm

  5. I don’t know what BTIA was thinking trotting Rauner out to babble vapid, robotic talking points on national TV, but he can wear the insult from the vile Coulter as a badge of honor.

If Rauner had been dribbling oatmeal out the side of his mouth, Coulter would have praised him if he did it while ripping on Mexicans, Muslims or Jews.

Coulter isn’t a “polemicist” as she says or a “conservative provocateur” as Kass describes her, but a flat-out racist who peddles hate-pornography for money to losers who get off on that sort of thing.

Comment by wordslinger Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:50 pm

  6. That transcript was painful to read.

    Comment by Flynn's mom Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:53 pm

  7. Maybe the administration is weighing the necessity to call out Coulter against calling attention to the embarrassing interview.

Do the right thing, Coulter doesn’t deserve a pass.

    Comment by We'll See Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:54 pm

  8. ===A spokeswoman for Rauner declined comment.===

Brittany Carl? I’ll leave that there as it is.

    To start…

The Best Team in America is Pineapple. The Pineapple talking points used by Rauner are Pineapple to answering the simple questions Bret Baier wanted answer. If the IPI hires Pineappled the Rauner Word Jumble, it would make sense that Rauner would keep repeating “Pineapple”.

I’m sorry for using… radical candor… on this interview. I’m tired of Rauner’s Pineapple promises, about our Pineapple system.

Comment by Oswego Willy Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:57 pm

  9. Coulter’s hateful speech aside, the Governor was a national embarrassment. Brett Baier asked tough questions — some several times pointedly. Our Governor’s response to almost every question was an attempt at a pivot: “Well, I’ll tell ya. (Issue) is broken.” Very shallow. And sad.

Comment by Diogenes in DuPage Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 1:58 pm

  10. What response is needed? Coulter is a clown. All you could do is point people back to that pathetic interview.

Comment by Arsenal Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:00 pm

  11. Rauner reminds me of the old joke about the dog answering ruff, roof, Ruth. I’m still waiting for the part where he responds meaningfully using other words.

  12. Not ready for prime time.
    Rauner, or the BTIA
    both are………broken

  13. –Rauner reminds me of the old joke about the dog answering ruff, roof, Ruth.–

    “What, I should’ve said Dimaggio?”

My kids loved that joke when they were little.

  15. The interview was pathetic. If BTIA set that up and told the Gov to keep repeating his mantra of Illinois is broken, they have been shown up for the amateurs that they are.

What could the BTIA say in response to the call out of Ann Coulter and others who had a field day on Twitter Friday night? Their thinking might be that a response would only direct even more people to the interview.

Wish more would said about Coulter’s use of the R word. We educators have worked to get that out of our students’ vocabularies. It is hurtful and so totally wrong. And there it is being used by an adult who should know better.

  16. When you faceplant, you don’t want to call attention to it by keeping the story going.

Apparently in Rauner’s admin. it’s imperative to defend those with mental illness against a non-insult but when an obvious, vile slam is made against those with intellectual disabilities it doesn’t warrant a murmur.

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:19 pm

  18. Or could it be Coulter’s political affiliation?

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:23 pm

  19. No winning a word war with Coulter. At least The Team seems to understand that.

Rauner has been “adjusted.” It will be interesting to see if he moves past his robotic talking points, or is even capable of thinking on his feet. Geez. (eye roll)

Comment by cdog Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:27 pm

  20. Bruce’s nonspecific response to the Charlottesville white supremacists rally was just as weak as Trump’s. Both didn’t condemn white supremacism by name. Both are afraid of alienating part of their bases. Might be why Bruce has no response to Coulter.

Comment by Grandson of Man Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:31 pm

  21. By responding, they are giving COulter what she wants. The best thing to do is to her ignore her.

  22. Republicans ripping into one another.
    Love it.
This is what happens when you hate everything which you disagree. No room for discussion, no room for consideration.

Comment by Glengarry Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:44 pm

  25. Rauner is the football coach who realizes after losing a close game that he never used any of his time outs. No game management skills. Maybe, at the core of all of this, he doesn’t have any clues on how to accomplish any of his stated goals, so he just keeps on his script. He refuses to answer any questions. It’s bizarre. Can a governor go four years without answering a question? I guess we’ll find out.

Comment by Trapped in the 'burbs Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:46 pm

  26. Slide? More like on point. As much as Coulter is about as dreadful as Unfit4Prez.

Raunner apparently has some ‘mental issues’ is as much as he does the same shtick over & over, thinking HE will get different results. For going on 3 years now.

    And this quote seems appropriate:
The true hypocrite is the one who ceases to perceive his deception, the one who lies with sincerity. André Gide

    Comment by sal-says Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:54 pm

  27. Responding to an insult by Coulter is like responding to anything Joe Walsh spits out. The source is so contaminated, there’s really no need to respond.

Comment by Wensicia Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:55 pm

  28. Condemning Trump, Coulter and white supremacists might not help him in his campaign to pit Chicago against the rest of the state.

Comment by Grandson of Man Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 2:57 pm

  29. Madigan controls her???

Comment by Bruce ( no not him) Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 3:00 pm

  30. Dropped ‘g’s,
    ‘Madigan’
    ‘broken’,
I represent everyone (but not Chicago),
..when they send me the bill/budget/proposal,
    I will tell you this…

May I suggest Rauner sign up for private lessons from Second City on how to improvise. He really needs new material.

  31. Rauner’s staffing system is broken and. Needs to be reformed.

Comment by Norseman Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 3:17 pm

  32. How many calls do you think he has made to Z and Goldberg? Something along these lines ” Hey guys I was just kidding , see you at work in the morning “

Comment by Anonymous Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 3:28 pm

  33. The man has avoided saying anything about federal issues like the plague, so they put him on national television? They didn’t see those questions coming?

Comment by Montrose Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 3:41 pm

  34. Where exactly did the Governor get it wrong?

    National immigration system is broken

    Illinois pensions are broken

    Illinois Governement budgets are broken

Our property tax system is broken

Our workers comp system is broken

He sounded like a broken record because Illinois is both broke and broken

Comment by Lucky Pierre Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 3:53 pm

  35. I thought Baier asked good, tough questions. The fired Rauner team didn’t need to backbite- they just need him to go on national tv more often. Jeez, is he bad.

Comment by Anonymous Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 3:58 pm

  36. Baier did get him to say “He Who Shall Not Be Named”. Nowhere near the drinking game count of “broken”, but I think it’s up to two shots now.

    Comment by Anon221 Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 4:00 pm

  37. (Tips cap to - Glengarry -)

“Who is the governor who lives in denial?

    Rauner-SquarePants…?”

    To the interview…

    Karma.

The BTIA ™ just embarrassed the Governor. Congratulations. You fire a Crew to get better press, but in reality they spent more time keeping yourself from total embarrassment, are you suprised when Karma gets you with your first national interview

A Fox interview for an “alleged” Republican” is a slam dunk for a Republican Comms Crew.

Even Bret Baier was stunned at the ignorance of Bruce Rauner, even commenting as such “I’m trying to pin down here”… which was code for “you aren’t saying anything.”

“Bruce Rauner failed”, this time himself, and also Illinois in the reality. That new Crew embarrassed the governor by sending him out there, naked to his “Pineapple” points.

The lone job of a Comm Crew is don’t have the Guv embarrass himself.

None of that interview, now one snippet, came saved for an Ad favorable for Rauner. It was an Pineapple Upside Down Cake of garbage. That’s not how I see a Crew going about their business well.

    #BTIA

Comment by Oswego Willy Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 4:02 pm

  38. If Rauner believes he’s getting good advice from “BTIA” to go on and national television and try out his campaign lines….Coulter is correct.

    LOL

Just like Baier said to Rauner, to paraphrase…

“What have you done about? What will change in your second term?”

    LOL

    You and the governor.

Can’t show how you’d fix it. No successes to run on for a second term.

Thanks for your embarrassing pathetic attempt to point out problems, and showing Rauner isn’t part of the solution.

Lemme guess - Lucky Pierre -…

This was a “up day” interview?

Comment by Oswego Willy Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 4:13 pm

  40. I wonder if the old crew’s IT department built a back door into the robot’s software. After they were fired, Goldberg used it to insert malware into the Governor’s program. Could that be what happened? Was it Goldberg who inserted the Pineapple Program?

Comment by Keyrock Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 4:15 pm

  41. Well LP,
What he “got wrong” was a complete failure to answer any questions. Ann Coulter was pretty blunt in calling him out. The only question left for any reasonable Illinois voter is if his failure to answer questions is because he has no ideas on how to achieve any of his objectives or if he has bad intentions that he has to hide from voters. Congratulations, obviously you’re drinking the Koolaid and think that he’s terrific. His new team of superstars should rethink their strategy of playing to a shrinking base and alienating the moderate voters that swung the election for him last time. How about that?

Comment by Trapped in the 'burbs Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 5:11 pm

  42. Agreed, no point in sparring with Coulter. The proverbial hissing match with a snake. Her fans on the BTIA ™ already must be terribly disappointed.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 5:45 pm

  43. Mr. Rauner forgot one ‘broken’. He himself, is clearly broken.

Comment by Slippin' Jimmy Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 5:52 pm

  44. I too am of the camp that the BTIA did t respond to Ann Coulter because her base is now a real large part of Rauner’s “base” 34%.

    The Superstars understood, “50% + 1″

The BTIA and IPI… ideology, even Ann Coulter ideology needs to be… “respected”

The next step will be trying to mend fences with Coulter…(?)

Comment by Oswego Willy Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 6:03 pm

  45. Just what every state wants! Their elected leader to get on national TV and tell the world their state is a horrible place to live (and do business).

No cheerleading genes in this man. His appearance worked to broadcast that everything is wrong with Illinois and those who live there. He is the only one with a clear vision but no one will buy it.

Ann might be wrong with her words but she got the message loud and clear that there is something wrong with this man. Just what every voter wants, this doomsday “leader”

Comment by Anonymous Sunday, Aug 13, 17 @ 6:09 pm

  46. “Learning Disabled” is the correct term now. And Rauner clearly does have a problem learning the political process.

What we want from leaders are solutions, not telling us what we already know.

  49. I spent the weekend wondering if Rauner would come back at Coulter, nothing. Besides showing some backbone, a Twitter fight with Coulter would offer some distractions as his AV is overridden.

Comment by Swift Monday, Aug 14, 17 @ 9:14 am

  50. “The ____ thing is broken” is not an argument, thats a premise.
Toulmin’s argument model should be on his reading and study lists. The lack thereof has been a fundamental flaw throughout his term.
His negative framing tendency- the thing is broken -versus i have an improvement idea -is another fundamental flaw throughout.
Finally, apparently nobody has any idea how change management processes work (similar to project management skills) and that should be on the reading and study list too.
Coulter response? Naw who cares about Coulter. Shrug.
