Rauner says “many superintendents and teachers” support his AV, but won’t name names

Posted in:

* Statehouse reporter Dave Dahl pointed out to Gov. Rauner today during a State Fair event that school superintendents “are pretty well organized” in favor of overriding Rauner’s veto of SB1. Why didn’t the governor organize superintendents who were in favor of his idea? The governor’s response

Well, many of them, are, um, supporting us. Many superintendents and teachers, I have teachers here at the fair coming up to me and say, ‘Governor, thank you for your amendatory veto. Thanks for what you’re recommending.’ You know, Speaker Madigan didn’t send me the bill for two months because he wanted to organize opposition and he didn’t want the real truth known. Now the numbers are out, the support of the SB1 originated back when the truth wasn’t known. Now that the numbers are out, more and more folks are coming to support us. […]

We certainly have a lot of support around the state.

And yet, the governor has still not held a single press conference with a group of educators who support his changes. Maybe he could’ve asked one of those teachers who came up to him at the fairgrounds to talk to reporters?

* Instead, we’re seeing lots of stories like this one

Superintendent of Schools John Asplund offered other points of consideration. He said the governor’s numbers make no allowances for inflation and there are concerns about the future of pension funding.

“Pretending there is access to money we cant have and there will be no inflation is scary, but the third thing is more scary,” Asplund said. “There will be no protection against pension cost shift. Eight percent of Teachers’ Retirement Funding would have to be born by districts. Our $23.8 million salary budget, times 8 percent, is a little more than 1.9 million.

“The governor’s proposal appears to be better, but if you dig into the numbers there is concern.”

  3. Rauner would have been a widely admired Hollywood left-winger during the McCarthy Era — he never names names.

  4. I hate to say it because it sounds … well, pretty radical.

    But: Rauner is a liar.

Comment by Macbeth Tuesday, Aug 15, 17 @ 3:36 pm

  5. I know how Rauner feels when asked about educ supporters. I have hundreds pushing for me to get a Nobel in Lit, but they are a little shy.

Willy and I also have the same issue with all the millionaires supporting his campaign for Gov.

    We feel your pain Bruce.

Comment by Norseman Tuesday, Aug 15, 17 @ 3:37 pm

  6. Rauner’s Mad Libs strike again. Are your secret supporters so afraid of Madigan that they have to be in the witness protection program? Fail… just a big, big fail.

  7. ===And yet, the governor has still not held a single press conference with a group of educators who support his changes. Maybe he could’ve asked one of those teachers who came up to him at the fairgrounds to talk to reporters?===

Here’s why this is perfect to the moment.

Rauner has put legislators on stairs, behind him, as he stood behind a podium and microphones on occasion.

These legislators gave him credibility. Rauner knows that.

So, what does Rauner do, when faced with questions of “support”?

“GA Democrats tell me all the time, I’m with you”

No Dem legislators on straits, behind him.

    Same with teachers, unions, mayors…

It’s always people, phantom people, that support, “large support”…

But I only see those Raunerite controlled legislators on those stairs, behind him, with microphones and a podium.

It’s a large phony as a leader can be, a leader saying “look behind me” and no one is following.

Rauner has no clothes, but the costumes he wears to pretend his purposeful misspeaks are true.

  8. He does not hesitate to tell ridiculous, self-serving lies on a regular basis.

    It’s automatic and obvious.

Could a reporter, just once, ask “did that really happen?”

Do that whole “who, what, when, where” thing?

Reporters must know that he’s lying. You’re not supposed to report what you know to be lies without at least challenging them.

So, between us.. - Norseman -…

We… don’t have those dozens and dozens of millionaires?

(Hat tip to - Boat Captain -)

    To the post, further,

In 3 plus years, how many times has Rauner been unable to “find” one… supporter… during these questionings?

How many times has Rauner followed up?

    What has been the ratio?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Aug 15, 17 @ 3:46 pm

  30. Not speaking about superintendents, but the sad truth is that some people I have talked to hear those magic words “Chicago bailout” and say they think the governor is standing up for them.
Explain that many downstate districts eventually would become collateral damage and the light bulb goes on for some. For others, the explanation takes too long.

Comment by Decaf Coffee Party Tuesday, Aug 15, 17 @ 4:58 pm

  31. I am a teacher and know many teachers who do support Rauner on his veto (me not being one of them) due to the Chi bailout messaging.

  32. Honeybadger @4:04 — Thanks for that YouTube link, which seems so appropriate in these days. Proud to say that Mr. Welch, the lawyer standing up to McCarthy, is an alum of my alma mater Grinnell College.

  34. Not 1 supporter from superintendents has stepped forward. Bruce has not paraded anyone up on stage for a press conference.

If support existed you know he would. Bupkis.

    Pants on fire.

  35. =Could a reporter, just once, ask “did that really happen?”=

I think Amanda Vinicky did that somewhat diplomatically last night when he spun his yarn on Madigan’s supposed Drury comment. I don’t think Rauner was prepared for it and had a deer in the headlights look to him.

Comment by Pundent Tuesday, Aug 15, 17 @ 5:46 pm

  36. Everyone needs to play the game back. When Rauner claims many support him, tell him that the vast majority do not. Then provide no support for that statement, just keep doubling down on it.

Comment by thechampaignlife Tuesday, Aug 15, 17 @ 5:54 pm

  37. Not sure who all those superintendents and teachers are at the state fair that spoke to Rauner. Everyone I know is either starting school or preparing for the start of school.

  41. More accurate is that perhaps some school folk are looking at the numbers and not as supportive of SB1 and might want some compromise, but can’t believe any school officials would publicly support the AV- it is full of pitfalls for schools. If there are only two choices: SB1 or the AV, the choice would be 100% SB1 without question.
