Did GOP roll out any candidates for SOS, Comptroller or Treasurer today?
Comment by Fax Machine Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:24 pm
And this was the right and proper thing to say.
Shame he couldn’t bring himself to say it sooner.

My final word on this
I promise. Rauner denounced racism. Old Blue prayed for the idiots that they could let God into their life and accept everyone as an equal. I guess time will tell which method is more effective.
Comment by Blue dog dem Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:26 pm
What is wrong with today’s media?? Rauner finally talks about Trump. Who cares? Fix the problems in Illinois.
Comment by Piece of Work Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:27 pm
===Who cares?===
It isn’t always about you.
Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:30 pm
Why is this like pulling teeth? I wonder what Rauner is like when eating out.
“Sir, would you like soup or salad with your meal?”
“You see, dinner is broken. And Madigans been breaking it for years. My turnaround agenda, supported by many waiters in this restaurant, will fix dinner.”
“So…soup or salad?”
“Focus, Henri, focus.”

“Did GOP roll out any candidates for SOS, Comptroller or Treasurer today?”
Someone should be keeping an eye out for potential contenders glad-handling….
Comment by NIU Grad Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:31 pm
I give him credit for finally answering this in a clear and unequivocal manner. He needs to get a lot better at that regardless of the topic. Endless spinning only turns him into a caricature and makes things much worse. The press seems to finally realize this weakness. It’s up to Rauner to do something about it.
Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:38 pm
So brave.
Comment by Sonny Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:39 pm
You know Trump is bad news in Illinois if Rauner can summon the backbone to say his name.
Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:40 pm
The mere fact that this had to be said, and the amount of time it took him to say it, is a sad statement about the misguided kowtowing to racists some believe is a “base”. Some in the GOP stopped ostracizing groups that deserve to be, and its led to this.

Good on Rauner, this is actually well said.
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:42 pm
Denouncing Trump for his words yesterday should be so common that it isn’t a story.
On a positive note Abe’s statues should be safe as they represent the a man whose ideals every American should strive for…
Comment by Mouthy Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:48 pm
I agree with OW. It was well said.
Comment by Triple fat Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:54 pm
If only America would have been so upset when Obama restarted racism in this nation. Maybe we would not be where we are today. So sad that no one’s looking for a solution. Just winning.
Comment by Whoelse Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:55 pm
No question Trump has blown the opportunity he was given in November. But remarkably in today’s Wall Stree journal a poll is out showing Hillary Clinton with even higher negatives. What is sad is that had Obama not discouraged Biden from running, Biden most likely would be President. How could Obama who everyone believes was brilliant not seen was a debacle Clinton was and would turn out to have destroyed his shot as getting someone to carry out his programs. It’s a mystery and someone needs to ask him why ?
Comment by Sue Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:55 pm
I would like for a dark money group to create an ad with these Rauner comments and play it downstate.
Comment by Real Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 12:58 pm
I saw on twitter that Rodney Davis made a statement on Trump today, too.
Have any other major GOP electeds spoken up?
I know some feel like this is a national issue and not a state matter, but the thing is Trump didn’t just disgrace himself or his office but his party.
Trump is making the party of Lincoln and the party of Eisenhower out to be a party by and for Confederate and Nazi sympathizers and if Republicans don’t want that to be the case they need to speak out at every level of elected office from the precinct committeeman on up.

Yep. Blame the black guy for racism. Bravo. The only thing missing from your comment was a flickering tiki torch. And a white pointed hood.

I don’t get the chance to say to say this often but…. A+ for the governor on his response.
Comment by Seats Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 1:05 pm
I rarely get to say this but Rauners response about his GOP was perfection.
Comment by Seats Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 1:09 pm
Kudos to Rauner for actually answering a question which required him to take a stand. Perhaps this will start a torrent of information, plans and initiatives. Ok, I was kidding. Anything other than “Madigan” or “the system is broken” is a good start.
Comment by Trapped in the 'burbs Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 1:11 pm
Yep play the black card. Race relations with out question went tragically down hill under president Obama. Not because of the color of his skin but for his approach to several incidents where he failed. That’s how we got to where we are today.
Comment by Whoelse Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 1:14 pm
Everyone should check the Chicago Tribune comment section… It’s very harsh there for Rauner after these Trump comments.

Revisionist history much? Forgot about the whole “Slavery, then segregation, then redlining and now overt racism in the form of the resurgence of the KKK and the ‘good people’ of the neo-nazi party (Donald Trumps words”?
Yeah…try to lay it all on Obama. Next.

That might be the most historically ignorant comment ever posted on this blog. It’s also vile, wrong and betrays your agenda.
Embrace it my friend. To paraphrase Dennis Green, you are who we thought you were.

==That’s how we got to where we are today.==
So it’s Obama’s fault that a bunch of racist nazis, that Trump built his base around, rallied to keep a statue of a traitor up, people protested that, and the nazis killed someone. All Obamas fault. Got it.

Sue-
This isn’t about Obama, Biden or Clinton. It’s about the president’s tolerance of white supremacy groups. Nice try at a diversion though.

=Everyone should check the Chicago Tribune comment section… It’s very harsh there for Rauner after these Trump comments.=
Everyone should also remind themselves of the margin that Clinton held over Trump in this state. I wouldn’t necessarily take my cues from the Tribune comment section.
Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 2:53 pm
If he really, truly feels that way, he should tweet it or post it on his own Facebook account.
Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 3:41 pm
So, he finally said something that gets genuine positive feedback and praise. But isn’t it rather sad that expectations have fallen so low that his words aren’t simply taken as a “normal” response.
Comment by Hieronymus Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 3:47 pm
What should the governor’s take away be from this experience? Perhaps, when the message really is a silk purse, then “messaging” is is probably going to be a cake-walk. But when all your other messages are just a bunch of sows’ ears, well then no amount of “messaging” is ever going to convince people that those sows’ ears are actually more silk purses.
Comment by Hieronymus Wednesday, Aug 16, 17 @ 4:02 pm
Who cares? Obama restarted racism?
What the everlovin’ fudge?!? If you were a person in my life, you would be out.
everywhere I went today, people were blown apart by what Trump did yesterday. He’s an enabler at best, a racist at worst. He conflates two different wars, and lacks a basic understanding of the glory of, and preservation of, our union. He fails to differentiate between people who fight for their rights against those would would literally drive some out of our country or support the policies of those who would put certain people in camps. IE, those people should all go away and die or we will do it to you. Nope. Not on my watch. Friday night was horrifying. Blood and Soil. If you don’t think opening up against the President is right, you condone that.
