The story behind that Facebook pic of Madigan

Posted in:

* Douglas County resident Isaac Partenheimer posted this photo on his Facebook page last night. He wrote that he was “Sitting next to this crooked son of a [redacted] at alexanders in Springfield”…

* And then

Frankly, I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often. And if you click here and read through the comments, you’ll see why.

* “It was not the most coherent message,” Madigan’s spokesman Steve Brown said of the sleeveless man this morning. As you can see from the second pic, Brown was with Madigan at the restaurant.

Brown said the guy said something like “I never voted for you and I probably never will,” and then said something about how people should “work together.” And after saying that several times, he left. It lasted about 30 seconds, according to Brown. The governor’s name wasn’t mentioned, Brown said, and alcohol may have been involved.

Several years ago, I was walking with Madigan at the Statehouse trying to get him to tell me something when he was accosted by a very angry man. Madigan remained cool and calm and the man said his piece and eventually walked away. It kinda spooked me, but Madigan went on chatting after the dude departed.

  1. Oh he didn’t get in the guy’s face, antagonize him, and call him a “tough guy,” as Chris Christie is known to do? Say what you will about Madigan, he’s very controlled and measured (unlike some people).

  2. While I do not think it is appropriate, Madigan has chosen a life working for the public, and that also means being confronted by the public.

  8. The guy said that he has never voted for Madigan. I would assume that this guy doesn’t live in Madigan’s District so he couldn’t vote for him if he wanted to. I wouldn’t be surprised if the guy doesn’t even realize this. I never cease to be amazed when talking to folks how uninformed they are when it comes to our public officials.

  10. ==You mean Mr. Madigan actually went somewhere else than Saputo’s last night? I am in shock.==

He goes to Alexanders a lot as well. It’s pretty well known that those are two places he often goes often. They both have a pretty regular crowd, who are used to seeing him and give a respectful distance. During weeks like this, though, there are more out of towners than usual.

The Speaker should be commended for shunning a security presence (let’s face it, nobody would get this close to the governor without ending up examining the texture of the ceiling tiles), and for being willing to listen to this guy’s rant. Shame Madigan had to endure it. You can respectfully disagree with someone and still make your point. And there is also a time and place to express your grievances. It wasn’t a public appearance per se, just MJM having dinner like anyone.

  31. I think the record is pretty clear Madigan does not care. He does not care about guy, this state, and certainly not our future.

Unless you somehow could threaten his power today, he does not care. I think he could make more money other ways, and his legacy at this point will burn in infamy because tax and spend is not sustainable. It is a known historical and economical fact. All he is playing for is to be the most powerful man in IL. And he will always be known as the Most powerful Man in IL history not named Lincoln.

  38. It’s rare you see a picture from someone who doesn’t like the person, so I think this is hilarious. Sounds like a couple of buddies who egged each other on to go up to him and they had enough liquid courage to do it. You know these 2 geniuses will be telling some whopper stories as the years go by.

When Rauner decides to go on local handshaking tours, a trooper comes in first and checks the bar/restaurant out and radios back what the scene is. They tell the wait staff that they may have a special visitor and need to be on their “A game”. (I’ve seen this happen myself) Ol Bruce has caught more than an earful on some of his common man tours. I think he catches people off guard by going up to their table, so the haters don’t have time or maybe don’t want to get a picture.

Which is a Facebook centerpiece, ‘I’ and ‘Me’..’Look at me, look what I did”. Madigan knows one day someone may do more than verbally vent, and he’s accepted that all along. Hope it doesn’t happen, but he knows the game and he knows risks/rewards. This guy is hammered by many commenters, but everybody at one time or other wishes they had enough guts (or alcohaol) to really blast some pol to his/her face. Cmon admit it. 😊

Money, sure. But still no class. The sleeveless shirt, by itself, is not worth commenting on. That the meathead in the sleeveless shirt decided that this was a fine time to express his unvarnished opinion of the Speaker of the Illinois House confirms the stereotype.

Put it another way, if he was wearing a decent shirt, he’d still be a jerk. But since he thought it was a good idea to interrupt someone’s dinner to spout poorly articulated political nonsense, AND he was dressed like a redneck, well, I’m sorry, but that’s too much.

Wheat was done a while back. Unless he has a vegetable/fruit business and was harvesting for market (might be considering he lives in Douglas County- makes more money than corn and beans), harvest is a ways off. 79. === Does Madigan cook is own steaks? ===

I hear he goes for the salad bar.

To the post, I’ve seen both Madigan and Rauner in public. I have my strong feelings on the both of them, but I did not feel the need to disturb either of them, as they were both on their own personal time and not engaged in state functions.

On a side note, I am extremely concerned about the state of our country, and the vitriolic temperament involved in our public discourse. I am Facebook friends with a former high school classmate of mine. He is a huge Trump supporter and makes degrading statements and personal attacks about “liberals” whenever he gets the chance. When we were in high school together, I really liked this guy and I would probably buy him a beer if I saw him out. We grew up in the same neighborhood, played football together, and have so many other things in common. When it comes to how we engage in political discourse, however, we couldn’t be any more different All I can think about is how could this have happened?

With all of our similarities I imagine that we generally value the same things: good schools for children to attend, a place to work and make enough money to support ourselves and our families, and generally have a safe and enjoyable place to live. Of course we may disagree on how we get there, but what’s important is that we both want the same things. I think that is what is lost on many people in society today. We aren’t against you - we are in it together to achieve the same thing. The sooner people realize this, the sooner we can take a big step forward into fixing the problems we have as a state and a country.

Yes, and most are processed out of state. We have Central Illinois Poultry Processing and Petersburg Poultry Processing that will do custom processing, but you need to schedule way in advance because the turkeys cost more to process and can’t be run at the same time as chickens. Yordy’s in Morton does their own processing under the USDA, but I don’t think they do birds other than their own. Those trucks for of turkeys you see on I-74 heading west are usually headed for a plant in Iowa.

The fair is on, not everybody dresses their best for the heat. That said, jorts are never the right choice.

  88. Maybe when he got back to Douglass County the road in front of his house was undergoing a little maintenance.

  89. Politicians should definitely be interrupted while dining out.

Citizens should definitely take a minute to form a decent criticism before doing so.

Lol. I was going to leave the jorts out of it, but since you mentioned it, the jorts mark him as a Cardinals fan.

  91. ===Lots of folks are going to be disappointed when they look at their ballot and realize Mike Madigan isn’t on it. ===

    Maybe, but Lisa will be.

  92. Rude guy. No excuse for that kind of behavior. Remaining calm is hard, but never forget who behaves at you that way.

  93. The mayor of Pontiac is a big fan of Mr. Jorts.

  94. Anon 12:20, a seed company hat, sleeveless tee, and jean shorts are known around here as a “Redneck 3-Piece.”

Leave the Speaker alone, or Rauner or anyone else, while they’re having a meal unless it’s a quick “Hello, nice to see you,”

If you have a beef, write them a letter. Show a little class. Above all else, keep your encounters off Facebook unless they’re warm handshakes.

  95. He was confused with the “right to bare arms”. Ridiculous behavior, which he is apparently proud of by posting on Facebook.

  96. Although the exchange wasn’t captured I heard on good authority that Madigan was also heard laughing and telling this gentleman of his plans to dispatch Scott Drury from the House.

  97. I spend a lot of time in Douglas Co. No doubt these two were heroes at the local coffee shop this morning.

That’s funny right there, but I digress. Definitely a Cardinals fan.

  99. OW - at least use the whole quote. In most cases even a Union job that takes concessions is better than being unemployed with no prospects now or in the future with the way this State has been run in the past and continues down that crooked path.

    Arock,

And Rauner has the best interest of these guys at heart. Right………

Well the facts speak for themselves that the Madigoons don’t. Debt, under funding education, and keeping a bad business climate to name a few.

Comment by Arock Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 1:45 pm

  101. “And to the people running this guy down because he is wearing a sleeveless shirt and hat, why don’t you turn your nose a bit higher.”

Oh please. The guy wanted to create a public spectacle and he got his wish. He got all puffed up like some exotic bird and acted like a classless lout in a crowded restaurant. Let’s not act like he was at the ol’ seed exchange minding his own business.

Whatever the percentage you think union members are overpaid, I expect you to take that same cut.

We should all suffer, including you, lol

  104. I like beer, it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer, it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (Makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey’s too rough, Champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I like beer…

  108. Classic “More Money than Taste.” I’m guessing we’re not going to see him in the Forbes 500 anytime soon. DSK, I’ll gladly stick my nose up in the air if I don’t have to smell that sleeveless wonder walking down Michigan Avenue.
