That’s from the far-right World Net Daily website, but it’s the same guy who drew the now infamous CPS/TIF cartoon for the Illinois Policy Institute. Yeah. No issues at all.

Any issues about the intent of that cartoon have been resolved. The other note is that few things say “out of touch” like white people suggesting that “cracker” is an insult. Has anybody used that one since about 1975?
One note about the chart. Jim Ryan went from leading voter getting to losing? Times can change quickly.

Especially when the governor with the same last name is facing federal indictment and it was the first midterm under a Republican president.

Thanks. I blanked on George’s legal problems at that time.
My recollection was more that Blagojevich ran a pretty good campaign painting Ryan as far right due to his role in some DuPage prosecutions.
But yes, absolutely. I had forgotten that doing so was made much easier by George’s problems.

I hasn’t seen this cartoon before. Eric Allie uses a lot of violent imagry in his cartoons. Even before the current fiasco, IPI should have figured out he would be trouble.

You may not have heard about it because the incident, like the whole “voter fraud” chimera, is a double nothingburger.

I believe there were only two Panthers at one polling station but FOX News made it seem like about a 100K across the land. The cartoon fits that narrative…

I think a couple of you completely miss the point. You, and the advisors for Bruce Rauner and Donald Trump. I would advise those of you defending these cartoons to stay away from politics. You wouldn’t help any candidate.

Bush picked up 2 Senate seats and 8 House seats in his first midterm as the 9/11 attacks favored Republicans that year.
I agree wholeheartedly about the link to George Ryan causing major problems and suggest that O’Malley or Wood could have beaten Blago, who was not a strong candidate. Probably not, given the recession and budget situation, but the race would have been much closer.

it’s interesting to note how cannily Rauner played race issues in ‘14, often wrong-footing Quinn. His comms shop is demonstrably worse at this now, and frankly, it started before the Purge.

The point was supposed to be that (I think) Bush wasn’t as big of a drag on Republicans here in Illinois in 2002 (based on my recollection as well as election results elsewhere, sorry if that seemed off topic - I was just trying to offer what I believe as proof). It was pre-Iraq War, so his hatred hadn’t ramped up to the levels we saw in later years. My second paragraph states that George Ryan was the biggest drag by far, followed by the proclaimed $5 billion budget deficit.
I agree with your assessment (from the 12:35 post) that a first midterm is usually difficult for the President’s party. I disagree it had as big of an effect as you reference in your 12:53 post.

The comments on Maze and Charles’ show this morning are super interesting. I know the House stood against the toon, but from what I’ve seen on social media it seems like a lot of people from all different racial backgrounds aren’t really on board w/ the “unambiguously racist” angle that Rahm is pushing, and that a few news stories have more than implied.

Rich, please do not cherry pick what I said. The events SUMMARIZED. I know it can’t be easy for a cartoonist to put Holder in the same frame as the black panthers who he declined to prosecute for voter intimidation if it were real time, but I’d give him some artistic license. Speaking of which, since when do we get to decide to have the government try to shut down speech? Everyone thinks it’s great that Rahm and Mitchell used their office to try to shut down the IPI cartoon. And now they want the Governor to do the same. Odd. I usually don’t see many complaints of cartoons depicting African Americans if it’s a message with which one agrees with. Let’s be real. This is a ginned up crapfest that’s designed to shut down a message. And, yes, Wordsmith. You can try to attack me all you want. The fact is it’s a very short rope from claiming a political cartoon is racist to inciting violence against the messenger. Whether it’s Theo or the martyred satirists at Charlie Hebdo, we should uphold freedom of speech over political correctness. Civic suicide is the alternative.

“Cracker” is outdated? Then my use of “honkey” really dates me!
I read up on “honkey,” and found it interesting that the etymology traces back to “bohunk,” an derogatory term for immigrants from Bohemia, used by other whites.
Language and how it changes is a fascinating thing. Remember that know there is a synonym for “cheap” we no longer use because it simply sounds racist.
(”Cracker” referred in the 1780s to men that Great Britain shipped to the southern penal colonies. Again, it originated as a White to White class oriented pejorative. It acquired additional meanings over time, but I don’t have time for a full language lesson.)
Language is slippery, as politicians have used to their advantage (and salespeople and con artists. After all, if the meaning of “is” can become a debate…

Is someone throwing them in jail? Who’s shutting down their free speech? Calling it out and criticizing it isn’t shutting it down. And it’s also “free speech” to try and shout down a message.

Stop being a victim. These aren’t simply cartoons with African Americans in them. They are cartoons with obvious racial overtones. If you want to defend them that’s fine. But don’t try and sidestep the racism involved with the cartoons. Own up to the message and defend it.

IPI can exercise their freedom of speech by publishing whatever they want. And others can exercise their freedom of speech by calling it racist.
And you’re free to say that there’s a “short rope” (whatever that means; you’re free to say it) between criticizing an IPI cartoon and the slaughter at Charlie Hebdo, and I’m free to say that you’re full of stuff.
See how that works?
