* Yeah, this roll-out is going so well…
Powerful Chicago Ald. Ed Burke, 14th, gave the leader of the Cook County Democratic Party a heads-up over the weekend that his daughter was circulating petitions to run for attorney general.
“He told me that his daughter is going to put out petitions for attorney general,” party Chairman Joe Berrios said. Burke was not asking for his support but was letting him know, Berrios added.
Burke has two daughters who are lawyers, and Berrios wasn’t clear which one was contemplating a run. Burke repeatedly said “no comment” Monday when asked about his conversation with Berrios and which daughter was going to circulate petitions.
One daughter, Jennifer, was appointed by Pat Quinn to a spot on the Illinois Pollution Control Board, which cranked up some controversy. The other daughter, Sarah, is listed as a property tax appeals lawyer at Burke’s law firm, although the Trib reports that she might no longer work there. Jennifer is also now at Burke’s firm.
* Meanwhile…
The county Democratic Party had endorsed Attorney General Lisa Madigan for re-election, but will meet again in two to three weeks to make a new endorsement, Berrios said. “We’ve got to see the shakeout, see who’s going to be a candidate,” he added.
* Tanned, rested and ready?…
NEW:Dan Hynes (frmr Comptroller) considering run for #ILAG supporters note "he's been vetted, statewide experience & financial connections"
— Mary Ann Ahern (@MaryAnnAhernNBC) September 19, 2017
I doubt that anyone could clear the field at this point and with so many (white) men running for statewide office this year it could be a tough sell. We’ll see.
*** UPDATE 1 *** I’m kinda thinking that earlier tweet wasn’t authorized by Hynes or anyone close to him…
NEW: Dan Hynes now says "not the right time" and not interested in #ILAG
— Mary Ann Ahern (@MaryAnnAhernNBC) September 19, 2017
From a person close to Hynes…
“Dan is not considering running for Attorney General. He is enjoying his private sector career and spending time with his young family.”
*** UPDATE 2 *** Well, at least now we know which daughter it was…
The City Council’s most powerful alderman said Tuesday that his daughter, considered, but has decided against, running for attorney general to replace Lisa Madigan. […]
Burke, chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee, said he would nevertheless have been supportive of Sarah’s campaign. But, she decided against it because of the demands of her young family, the alderman said.

Maybe both Burke daughters will run. I polled my neighbors last night, and nine of them are running, too. This is the hottest thing since those fidget spinners.

I think we will see paid circulators who will be asking voters to sign for multiple AG candidate sheets at the same time.
Funny that Berrios is mentioned because he is probably a big winner from this. With all the media coverage of the Gov & AG race (and possibly Cook County Prez if Boykin gets in) his race falls further under the radar, meaning less scrutiny.

Lets see Tom Dart now Dan Hynes hummm. Is this coincidental or just those two factions from the 19th ward preparing to do battle?

Please, no Dan Hynes. No Pat Quinn. Let someone else have a shot. We need the refresh button, not the retread button.

You know, Obama has the name ID, he is an attorney, has some governmental experience and a lot of time on his hands.
Just saying.

After discussing with my advisers and surveying the landscape, I’ve decided to launch my campaign for AG today…here…on the blog. Wondering if I can get elected while preserving my CapFax anonymity-ish.

===Obama has the name ID, he is an attorney===
You mean, she is an attorney.

Not a single candidate on the Democratic ticket from the collar counties at this point. Seems like you would want someone from the collars or downstate if possible, although Hynes always did well downstate.
Surprised we haven’t heard from Senator Noland yet. It will be interesting to see what Jack Franks does and whether a candidate arises from Lake County.
Also, no official statement from Jacob Meister yet on his intentions.

I also may get in, there isn’t anyone going after the obese suburban dad vote…
Already have my slogan
OneMan for AG…
You gonna finish that?
Comment by OneMan Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 10:28 am
My sources tell me Jacob Meister, former candidate for US Senate & Cook County Clerk of the Court is looking at it. The time is right for a LGBT statewide candidate.
Comment by Fax Machine Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 10:31 am
Fax Machine - With all due respect to Meister, if he couldn’t even get near Dorothy Brown in the 2016 primary with all of her baggage, there is no way that he can win statewide.

Actually, Dan was a fantastic comptroller. Advocated hard for the first rainy day fund. Great guy who ran a solid office.
Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 11:31 am
I said in comments yesterday that Sarah Burke was the political daughter in the family. Former big firm trial lawyer, assistant state’s attorney and was the state’s attorney’s lobbyist in Springfield.
Comment by Southside Markie Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 11:49 am
Actually Dan Hynes would be a great pick. Good guy, smart guy. Ran a solid office as state comptroller. Would be a hell of a better pick than some mentioned.

As much as I like the Burke and Hynes family and respect their years as political powerhouses, it is time for new, fresh blood to start running for office. Please just retire and/or enjoy time with your families.

I really hope the Democratic party puts forth a great multi-ethnic/racial slate for 2018. One that will appeal to all corners of Illinois.
Comment by HoneyBadger Tuesday, Sep 19, 17 @ 12:32 pm
Rich, just because one daughter has decided not to run doesn’t mean the other one won’t. Every Burke family member is entitled to election to public office.

Dan Hynes would be an excellent choice for AG. Was well respected as an active, knowledgeable, gentleman who didn’t seem to get all radical when it came to politics. An “upstater” who appealed to us downstaters also…
