Harold unveils long list of legislator endorsements

Posted in:

* If you thought the Republicans would find someone else to run for attorney general now that Lisa Madigan won’t run again, you really should think again. All the big names say they’re not interested. And check out this press release from Erika Harold’s campaign…

Republican Attorney General candidate Erika Harold released the following list of endorsements from state legislators:

“I am so humbled by the outpouring of support from legislators across the state,” said Erika Harold. “Republican legislators hear from constituents every day about the problems Illinois families face. They have led the fight in Springfield for reforms to put our state back on the right path. It is an honor to have their support and join with them in the fight for reforms that will put the people ahead of the powerful political class.”

* Some quotes…

“Erika Harold had the courage to enter the race before Lisa Madigan withdrew and that is the type of courage needed to challenge the status quo. I am going to do everything I can to make sure she becomes our next Attorney General.” – House Minority Leader Jim Durkin

“I have known and worked with Erika Harold for many years. She is a sharp lawyer and a great a person. She has dedicated her career to advocating for those who oftentimes could not advocate for themselves. Whether it has been in the courtroom, in the prisons through her work in prison fellowship or in the classrooms with her anti-bullying campaigns, Erika has always been a voice for the voiceless. Illinois will be lucky to have her voice fighting for all Illinoisans in the Attorney General’s office.” – Sen. Jason Barickman

“Erika Harold has already demonstrated the tenacity and courage to stand up for our families. She announced her candidacy knowing she would take on the most powerful political family in Illinois. Illinois’ political corruption is legendary, and for as long as I’ve been alive, too many of our elected officials have lacked the courage and values to hold themselves accountable. As a result, Illinois has become steadily more frustrating to live in, harder to do business in, and more expensive to raise a family in. I can’t think of a better choice to break from this past and help usher in a new generation of leadership than this accomplished attorney and political outsider. If you want to change the state’s trajectory, if you want to see Illinois become a beacon of hope and opportunity in the Midwest, if you want elected leaders we can trust to do what is just, what is fair, and what is right; then join me in supporting Erica Harold.” – Rep. Mark Batinick

“I met Erika several years ago and was impressed by her warmth and sincerity. She is an incredibly determined and intelligent person who wants to use her skills to serve the citizens of Illinois as the State’s Top lawyer. She will work fiercely for consumers, crime victims and very importantly against public corruption.” - Sen. Jil Tracy

“I’m happy to support Erika Harold to be Illinois’ next Attorney General. Erika, is a next generation leader, committed to defending Illinois’ best interests, not the special interests. Her strong, determined and dedicated voice, for every Illinoisan and the rule of law, is exactly what we need in the Attorney General’s office once again. She has my vote!” – Rep. Nick Sauer

“The entrenched corruption of Illinois politics hurts every family in the state. Erika Harold will fight against Speaker Madigan and for the working families of our Great State. I proudly stand with Erika Harold for Attorney General!” – Rep. Allen Skillicorn

“I can’t wait for Erika to take office as Illinois’ Attorney General. Then we will once again have a whole AG– one who tackles public corruption plus the feel good consumer protection issues our current AG prefers.” – Rep. Margo McDermed

“I’m proud to endorse Erika Harold for Illinois Attorney General. Erika is a qualified, confident, and talented attorney who puts the needs of Illinoisans first and who will represent them well.“ - Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst

“The people of Southern Illinois deserve an attorney general who will aggressively prosecute public corruption and defend our constitutional rights. That is exactly what Erika Harold will do at the capitol and why I strongly endorse her to be our next attorney general. I will work every day with Erika to put the people above the political class.” – Rep. Dave Severin

  4. Wow, I was impressed that Durkin endorsed her at City Club yesterday, but wondered if maybe he might change his mind if another candidate jumped in. Apparently not. This list must have been in the works for some time. Good for Team Harold. They have their stuff together.

    Very impressive.

  6. Rich- I would love to see some discussion of what Rauner can do with pensions and collective bargaining with a republican AG that he could not with LM in that position. It is pretty obvious that this office is important to the Governor.

Probably a topic for another day but I have been wondering about this since the LM announcement and did not see any speculation in any of the comments.

  8. Willy Im seriously dying to know why you believe this is an automatic loss? How can we trust your judgement on this one when last week you told me several times that the GOP would drop Erika and someone else would reveal themselves?

Could it possibly be that all of those who fought with me last week about someone else stepping up are afraid that the GOP has found an outstanding political outsider who will revitalize the office after years of Madigan insider stink?

    but what do I know…

  9. Adorable watching mostly dull, aging men of little accomplishment rushing to wrap themselves in the wholesome goodness of a real star like former Miss America Erika Harold. She’s got a real chance to win - if the deadwood of the IL GOP doesn’t drag her down.

    Comment by Chris P. Bacon Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 9:47 am

  10. That’s quite a list. I bet she holds the Democratic AG candidate to just 56% in the general.

Her political CV is losing the ‘12 Kingsmoot for Davis’ seat and the ‘14 primary for Davis’ seat.

  12. Iggy. A question that answers itself.

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 9:50 am

  13. The reason I ask the “real deal” question Saluki is that I encountered Erika in a non-political setting a couple of months before she announced her run and she didn’t exude the sort of charisma or swagger I was expecting from a former Miss America or aspiring politician. Maybe she is different on the stump though?

Even though our politics differ, if a Republican has to take over I’d rather it be a female and a Downstater to balance things out so good for her that they are not going to railroad her like they did for the sake of Rodney Davis.

  14. No, - Iggy -…

===Could it possibly be that all of those who fought with me last week about someone else stepping up are afraid that the GOP has found an outstanding political outsider who will revitalize the office after years of Madigan insider stink?===

Yeah, where’s the SoS, Treasurer, and Comptroller candidates?

Sometimes, even with a 20+ year window when the GOP closed that idea of taking on Jim Ryan or Birkett and then token candidates… let Harold lose another race. Why fight the Trump and Rauner headwinds, and do it without SoS, Comproller or Treasurer running mates.

Harold isn’t any juggernaut that strikes fear, and even with Rauner backing her, things aren’t looking great for GOP statewide wins right now.

Let Harold take the loss. Then she can be like Oberweis…

  15. ==Willy Im seriously dying to know why you believe this is an automatic loss?==

I wouldn’t call it an “automatic loss”, but it’s an open seat in a state that puts a thump on the scale for Democrats in a midterm with a Republican in the White House. In such a situation, just a Generic D vs. Generic R race is probably pretty good for the former. Her best hope is that the Democrats nominate a real dud, and hey, we might oblige.

Erika Harold checks all the boxes. She has the party’s full support. She’ll have plenty of money. Not to mention the Rauner ground game behind her. Remember that one? The one you told everyone didn’t exist? She currently has no opponent, and is raking up the endorsements left and right.

But because nobody is going to run against Jesse White for the kabillionith time…. that means that Harold is going to lose?

This is not your best work, Willy.

Comment by Jack Kemp Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:00 am

  24. A bit of a no-brainer for endorsing, what do they have to lose be endorsing an African American female for the AG. It’s the whole “I have a black friend” response when being called a racist. If Harold wins great, if she loses they still have the endorsement to point to.

Comment by Swift Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:00 am

  25. -Yeah, where’s the SoS, Treasurer, and Comptroller candidates?-

What purpose do these offices really add minus the patronage positions? A friendly Comptroller would be nice, but isnt necessary. With focusing on two statewide candidates plus house races, ilgop isn’t spreading resources so thin.

  46. Arsenal - you are correct that Tim Johnson quit after the primary. He worked with Congressman Shimkus to clear any serious primary challengers and then dropped out in May 2012. That put the GOP in a tough spot.

That “race” in 2012 started slow and then at one point there were 10-15 viable candidates to replace Tim Johnson on the ballot. The process and jockeying was something to behold.

Comment by Curl of the Burl Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:26 am

  47. Willy, are you talking about “head winds” because you’re experiencing them, or because it’s common wisdom heretofore?

It’s petition time, and many PCs are out there. For me; I’m not hearing the Trump stuff, and it’s almost eerie how little I hear about the Governor (his relevance is very much in question in that people aren’t voicing either way on him) I don’t think that’s a great sign at all.

But the Madigan stuff is sticking and pretty dramatic out there. He has no anonymity anymore. I know it’s a cliche around here, but the “because Madigan” theme is pretty strong. Lisa leaving the race heightened that (i.e. Wrong Madigan leaving)

I’m not suggesting a banner year for the GOP, but I’m not picking up this “headwind” theory we always hear about. This one, for me, is shaping up as a big series of localized battles. No one’s in love with either party. It’s about your guy or your gal this time around. That’s what I’m hearing.

    Comment by A guy Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:30 am

  48. I get not running anyone against Mendoza and especially against White. Mendoza has acquitted herself well and White is as unbeatable as anyone I have ever seen. But to not run anyone against Frerichs is nuts. I know the Senate GOP is facing an insanely high amount of members up for reelection but finding someone mid-term - especially if you promise to pony up some $$$ - should be somewhat enticing.

Comment by Curl of the Burl Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:39 am

  49. ==especially if you promise to pony up some $$$==

But therein lies the rub, right? We all like to talk about Rauner like he can throw basically unlimited funds at every race, but he probably won’t. He’s going to need every penny he can spend for his own race, frankly.

Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:51 am

Comment by JoeMaddon Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 10:53 am

  51. Arsenal - and that might be why Erika Harold is THE choice. Rauner may only want to support one other statewide candidate. Who knows. Yes - he will need the lion’s share of whatever he has allocated. My main thing is whether Rauner is going hard after House and Senate races. I have heard that he is not - but who knows. That may change based on who wins the Dem gubernatorial primary.

  53. Either by luck or design, the two areas where Harold showed real weakness in 2014 - fundraising and building an organization - are presumably addressed (via Rauner’s money and a unified GOP behind her). She’s way too conservative for my taste, but especially if you’re a Dem, you’re fooling yourself if you think she doesn’t have a shot here.

That’s what happens when a fluid situation like the multi-term AG decides to not seek re-election, something no one saw coming.

The fluidity of the last 36-54 hours makes things change.

  68. the Munger team had some good hard working people. Some of them were former Rauner folks in 14. some of them were Munger staff members who took a leave of absence to work on her campaign.

However most of the folks who took leaves from the govs office were deployed into the field for house and senate races.

In my personal opinion the ILGOP realized that it would be hard for statewide Republicans to win in a year that Donald Trump was at the top of the ticket. So they kicked Leslie some cash, made sure she was on the airwaves but they did not go balls to the walls for her. I have been a part of balls to the walls campaigning and that did not happen. the fact that Munger lost by so few points in a state where Hilary cleaned up says some very nice good things about the people that helped Munger. One might ask what would have happened had the true man power been dedicated to this race? Could it have been won, or was the top of the ticket just too much of a drag to over come?

  69. ===How can we trust your judgement===

Who trust my judgement. Everyone has an opinion, me as well. Making it about me isn’t making an argument.

To that argument after you wavy it framed on the premise of discrediting me, lol…

===when last week you told me several times that the GOP would drop Erika and someone else would reveal themselves===

I wanted to address this seperate.

Like Dart running… or Hynes running… or any number of speculative thoughts to a true, old school bombshell.

Now, “let Harold lose” makes sense, given that we are still waiting for opponents for Frerichs and Mendoza, and this is an open seat.

  71. Rauner had a higher percentage of his staffers helping out Avery Bourne than anyone else - including Munger.

    Are you politely saying…

“They had people. Grossly inept people, but they had people.”?

Left handed compliments are better than this, lol

===In my personal opinion the ILGOP realized that it would be hard for statewide Republicans to win in a year that Donald Trump was at the top of the ticket. So they kicked Leslie some cash, made sure she was on the airwaves but they did not go balls to the walls for her.===

    Adorbs. Let’s break this down.

    “In my personal opinion”

    Oh boy….

“the ILGOP realized that it would be hard for statewide Republicans to win in a year that Donald Trump was at the top of the ticket.”

Trump will be at his midterm. Same.

Harold will have Rauner running too. Running right now at 63% disapproval. What’s different?

===So they kicked Leslie some cash…===

Some cash? They outspent Mendoza by millions.

    Millions.

    Some cash. That’s cute.

===made sure she was on the airwaves but they did not go balls to the walls for her.===

So they conceded to Mendoza? Holy Guacamole. You outspend, you have an incumbent, you have all these superstars…

and Harold will get the “Top” players or “Munger” players… Trump is in the midterm, Rauner running too…

Let Harold run, throw her some money, the top people will be running statehouse or Rauner’s campaign…

    LOL

    This…

===I have been a part of balls to the walls campaigning and that did not happen. the fact that Munger lost by so few points in a state where Hilary cleaned up says some very nice good things about the people that helped Munger===

“Of all the losing canpaigns, this one list too”.

    Yikes.

=== Could it have been won, or was the top of the ticket just too much of a drag to over come?===

Harold should be asking herself this everyday, given now now one wants to run against her and ALL this support?

    ‘Tween us…

I appreciate your position, I even appreciate being called out and having to defend a thought or an opinion. That’s what makes this place great. No place like it in Illinois.

What gets me is trying to make an argument counter that may seem like a shill thing off what that commenter could believe is my alleged credibility is now to be discredited to gin up some other credibility.

    That’s all.

    With respect, bud.

  75. sorry to hear willy, although I did enjoy your use of the word churching, gave me a chuckle as I will be “Synagoging” this evening.

Anyways fantastic retort to the previous post. Honestly it was a little long for my liking. So ill try to shoot for more brevity in the future so you don’t need to exhaust us with your analysis.

  77. ==- A Guy -

    1) Lisa wasn’t afraid of Harold.

    2) Even with “because Madigan”, Rauner is polling 63% disapproval.==

    1) Never said or even implied she was. Apparently Harold isn’t afraid of Lisa either?

    2) Because Madigan is polling even higher. I’d hazzard to guess…a lot higher.

To my friend Walk, we respectfully disagree on input with petitions. Dems aren’t nearly as critical of the “home team” as GOPers are. Believe me, I don’t consider that a strength. Also, depending on the candidate, if you’re not anticipating a primary or a very serious one; it’s wise to go to “less” partisan households for signatures. It takes more time, but it’s a heck of a lot more helpful to ask for a vote as early as possible and get an impression on them early. Otherwise, your observation is very valid. The “choir” doesn’t teach you much.

  78. ===Apparently Harold isn’t afraid of Lisa either?===

It was a political strategic gamble to work with Rauner to indeed bring the name “Madigan” into the the statewide races, and where both Rauner and Harold could benefit.

That’s gone now. They’re stuck with each other.

===Because Madigan is polling even higher. I’d hazzard to guess…a lot higher.===

    Hmm.

Last public polling had Rauner’s negatives a mere 2-3 points behind Madigan’s negatives… and Rauner is running statewide while Madigan is not… and Lisa isn’t running either.

A 63% disapproval with a below 40% approval isn’t the best for an incumbent, lol

  80. ==Just a thought: You’re likely not targeting “D” households for R petition signatures. We’re hearing a lot about Trump and Rauner as the problems, in our canvassing.

This “field” knowledge during petition gathering means next to nothing.==

This. My experiences canvassing this fall are almost the exact opposite of Guy’s.
