Another problem for McCann

Posted in:

* Add this to a long and apparently growing list of financial issues for the GOP incumbent, who faces a contested primary next year and may run for governor

State Sen. Sam McCann, R-Plainview, and his wife, Vicki, were subjects of a foreclosure lawsuit filed last summer on a home they purchased in Florida in 2005.

McCann, who owns a construction company, said the property included 20 acres he hoped to develop, but the purchase was followed by the “financial meltdown” of 2008-2009.

According to the lawsuit, filed July 1, 2016, by Bank of America against the McCanns, a bank and two unknown tenants, the McCanns defaulted on the loan and failed to make any payments since April 1, 2015.

The final judgment of foreclosure, dated June 1, listed the total due as $157,573. That included the unpaid principal of $134,081, plus $17,346 in interest, as well as other charges, such as title search, service of process and notice of publication. […]

“Unlike some other legislators, or would-be legislators, I don’t have to read about the problems real Illinoisans face in a textbook,” McCann said. “I have faced and continue to face many of the same problems that so many citizens face every day. I have indeed walked a mile in their footsteps.”

  1. This isn’t going to help Sam … but you have to admit his response about personally knowing Illinois citizens’ problems was a good answer. That may actually help him in some areas of his district.

  2. And his line about working through and slowly paying off his debts instead of taking bankruptcy was pretty good also.

What’s his pitch gonna be? “I’m a deadbeat, vote for me”?

  4. Surprised he didn’t use his campaign account to cover the mortgage payment.

    Probably more like:

I’m an average Joe / small businessman who got in over my head … and I’m doing the honorable thing by paying my debts when I can.

  6. McCann’s wife was taken to court over the summer for a $15,000-$20,000 credit card delinquency. This is on top of Senator McCann’s multiple court filings brought against him by credit card issuers.

Sam has certainly mastered deflecting blame away from himself. He is just choc full of excuses and “explanations”.

Not many people in the 50th Senate District have a second home in Florida.

I can understand one or two problems. But everything is coming down on him and it has all happened within a tight timeframe.

  7. “Unfortunately, I too know what it is like to be amongst the filthy, unwashed masses. I just had to foreclose on my 20 acre summer home! Thank goodness we have Bruce and Proft to cover my debts, I wonder how the little people pay for their second homes?”

  8. So obviously legislators don’t have real world problems? He is a regular person. He is who Trump talks about when saying the forgotten middle class. All over this state folks like Sam went through rough times and still haven’t recovered. Think that message won’t resonate when going after a GOP Gov who signs abortion bill, TRUST Act, transgender rights, enhances things for the AA and Latino community? I’m betting Trump would love an Illinois Gov who says his name?

  9. His answer may resonate, especially if 2018 becomes the year voters finally get fed up with rich “outsiders” coming in and playing politics for a few years, generally with disastrous results.

  10. A lot of reporters feel dirty when someone hands them a manilla envelope filled with oppo research. They feel dirty because using it means they will be doing the bidding of one side of a political battle. They feel dirty because they are basically handing over their objectivity and actually taking part the nastiness of partisan attacks.

Others are happy to have the content and don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Bernie is a shining example of the latter group.

  11. Typical Illinois politician. Spends more than comes in. Sorry to be mean spirited.

  12. Starting to think a run for Governor would be an “up and out” move designed to save more dignity than losing the primary for his own seat would be.

  13. Hey M-

Where does that leave Rich for reposting the dump? Not Bernie’s fault for reporting facts.

  14. I wouldn’t count Sam out yet.

Illinois voters have a proven record of ignoring baggage.

  15. How many companies did Trump take through bankruptcy? The GOP should groom Sam for President.

  16. Was at a public meeting today where Sam spoke and had a Q&A session. Admittedly, it was a mostly friendly audience, but this foreclosure issue didn’t even get brought up.
