Illinois Republicans are split over whether to support Gov. Bruce Rauner after his decision to sign the abortion funding measure, House Bill 40.
Wheaton State Rep. Jeanne Ives has been approached by conservatives to consider opposing Rauner in the March primary, but for now, she is noncommittal.
“I’m not actively pursuing it, I’m letting it kind of boil up and we’ll see what happens,” Ives said. “I’m hoping somebody comes forward to run against him and we take him out as Republicans. Or I’m hoping that he decides on his own, ‘Look my base is eroded beneath me, there’s no chance of me winning because my base is going to stay home.’”

As candidates for legislative positions jump into various races in Southern Illinois and around the state, state Sen. Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon, is still waiting to determine his next move.
McCarter, who is not running for re-election in 2018, has been recommended by Illinois Republican congressional members to be the next ambassador to Kenya. He has interviewed for the position, but the White House has yet to decide who it will nominate. […]
McCarter’s reaction to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s decision to sign House Bill 40 allowing Medicaid to pay for abortions left him and others saying Rauner should not run for re-election.
McCarter added he’s had numerous people ask him to consider a run for the governor’s office.
“My statement that he should not run for re-election has nothing to do with me and what my plans are,” McCarter said. “I believe he has betrayed in the greatest way the people that got him elected.”
Whatever he decides, maybe the Senator should refund the $30,000 that Rauner and his even more decidedly pro-choice wife have given him and his group over the years.

“I was frustrated,” said State Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, who was recently named the party’s Senate leader. “This is a bill that I opposed. I have voted pro-life, I am pro file. I had a number of meetings with the governor, one-on-one, to talk about this.”
Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin Illinois Democrats pushed through the abortion measure with Rauner in office to cause a rift within the Republican party.
Brady added the governor isn’t pushing a social agenda, but he doubts anyone would mount a primary challenge against Rauner next year.
“The governor would be very tough to beat and I think anyone who is thinking about a primary run better have a lot of money and better realize this is a big state and it’s hard just to jump into,” Brady said.
Brady said any challenger would likely need a lot of money and wouldn’t have a lot of time.

Rauner has lost whatever was left of any republican leadership mandate. His platform is now purely non-republican.

When members like a McCarter are thinking they “can’t support” or “feel betrayed”… except during those anxious times of waiting for an EFT from Bruce and Diana Rauner so your re-election guarantees social services and higher education get purposely hurt, I dunno if you get to play the “righteous indignation” card until you return to Bruce… and Diana… to both RaunerS the money you used to win or keep your seat.
At least Rep. Breen said he enabled Bruce Rauner.

I don’t think its reasonable to demand the return of money that was given by Rauner to support Republican positions.
It was Rauner that pivoted, not most of the recipients of his money.
Be loud and proud of using his money for Republican agenda items.

I get a sense that many regulars here aren’t realizing the severity of what Rauner did to his last supporters.
This idea of “give the money back” to show purity isn’t being pushed by those feeling backstabbed, but by those who’ve cheered the backstabbing.
Pro-taxpayer funding of abortions feel vindicated when their despised governor sold pro-life GOP voters out. They are not understanding the depth of this rift.
Additionally, a rift existed before Rauner sold out. This only worsened it.
Rauner finally betrayed the last group of supporters he had after they defended his disasterous term in office for three years. ILGOP support for Rauner was almost completely dependent upon his money and ability to win. These supporters didn’t imagine they would witness a GOP governor do to human life what Rauner so ham-handedly did.
This is real.

With respect to Leader Brady, who I do like very much…
The PersonalPAC questionnaire and Diana Rauner herself made anything but a signature all but impossible.
In reality, Bruce Rauner has signed the most liberal abortion bill in the 50 states, as a Republican. No Democrat could’ve gone farther left that Rauner did, and no signature by any governor is “forced”. A signature is a choice made. A choice only a governor can make and follow through on in their duties.

The rift now exists because Republicans now realize we let a stranger in our house, but if we’re being real honest, we knew who Rauner was, Rauner just decided to remind Republicans who he is.

VMan is 100% correct. The pro-life element along with the populist/Trump/immigration Hawks is a rather large swath of Republican Party.
An opponent in primary would not be welcome news for Gov.He stands a real chance of going down.

It’s not lost that Rauner signed a bill that no other governor in the county signed, Democrat or Republican.

In the words of esteemed coach Dennis Green, the Rauners are who we thought they were.
If Ives, Breen or McCarter feel betrayed it’s only because they didn’t pay attention to Rauner in 2014 or didn’t believe him. The problem is that they were complicit in every other aspect of his agenda. And for me there in lies the hypocrisy. They were perfectly willing to cash his checks and enable the destruction that he wrought for 2.5 years. So spare me this nonsense of how he now needs to be “taken out”.

I’d like to know some more about the emails from Diana Rauner in the days leading up to the HB40 reveal.
I think she wrote that press release, it sure wasn’t the former IPI staff people in the Gov’s office.
The no-social agenda couple that can’t deliver a thing remotely resembling the GOP platform….

I don’t know if I’d say that the Republicans let a stranger in their house. Rather they put their house up for sale, Rauner bought it, and he allowed them to live rent free. It’s his house and his rules. It’s the one thing that he’s been very transparent about.

Senators Duffy and McCarter were the only two Senate Republicans who (publicly) supported Rauner in the 2014 primary. The initial Personal PAC questionnaire was answered after the primary - so I can understand the concept that certain GOP officials were “duped” - but once both questionnaires came out the subterfuge was over.
However - and this is from a purely devil’s advocate stance - did Rauner’s most ardent supporters continue to stand with him and use the reasoning that he would renege on a hypothetical answer to a questionnaire? Could they have imagined that in early 2017 a bill that allowed for Medicaid and state employee health insurance dollars would pass through both chambers? Two to three years ago - before President Trump - did anyone think this was a REAL possibility? Answering a questionnaire is one thing. Actually following through on what you “promised” on a questionnaire is another.
A good example would be candidates or officials responding to anti-gun groups and claiming they would vote to ban guns. But if push came to shove would they really vote in that manner?
Saying one thing via a candidate questionnaire is one thing. Following through is another.
