Pawar heavily dependent on wealthy benefactor

Posted in:

* If you click the link on this tweet, you’ll see that 77 percent of the money Ameya Pawar raised during the third quarter came from one person: The wealthy father of Pawar’s campaign manager…

A week ahead of deadline:
Ameya Pawar for Governor
09/30/17
Raised: $335,980.33
Spent: $260,625.45
CoH: $304,788.56https://t.co/EFOj0qvm3b

— IL Election Data (@ILElectionData) October 9, 2017

That’s not a ding on his campaign manager at all. Sam Hobert won our 2016 Golden Horseshoe Award for Best campaign staffer - Senate Democrats. It just is what it is.

Pawar reported a ton of small contributions. But, outside of that one $250,00 contribution, he only raised $85,980.

* Meanwhile, Pawar had a couple of awkward moments during the Democratic candidate forum over the weekend…

During police brutality discussion, protester shouts @Ameya_Pawar_IL down, calling him "just another one of Rahm Emanuel's puppets."

* And…

AHERN: As a progressive candidate, why are you not a member of the Progressive Caucus for the Chicago City Council?

PAWAR: Love that question. So, I think I’ve been able to get a lot done on City Council, work on progressive issues. Truthfully, I know what my faults are. I tend to work alone. I don’t always build coalitions. But I think that’s always been able to afford me the ability to actually pass legislation. I think there has been a lot of personality conflicts between me and the Progressive Caucus and I own that. Some of it’s started by me, and some things that are internal. I don’t think that makes sense to air that. I respect them. And I’ll tell you one thing. I worked on the task force to pass $13 minimum wage and I led the effort on paid sick leave but they were also the ones leading out there and organizing around it. So, I think we’ve all played our roles, I’m proud of the work that I’ve done and I’m proud of my record. There have been some personality issues that came up. And I don’t think it makes sense to air that in a public setting, other than to say I respect them. I think they respect me. I’ll leave it at that.

AHERN: How do you work, then, with the state? If you are someone who likes to work alone, how will you expand that role from being a city council member to the head of Illinois?

PAWAR: I mean by working alone is I’ve always been able to cobble together the votes to pass things like an independent budget office or paid sick leave. I got here on my own. I knocked on doors, I knocked on doors with my wife. I have volunteers that help me. I’ve never been a part of any club and no establishment figure has ever helped me. The party’s never given me a dime and I’ve never asked them for a dime. I got here on my own grit and sh – sweat equity – Now I own my weaknesses, I always have. But I’ve been diplomatic. I’ve always worked hard. And I’ve outworked people and that’s how I’ll work as governor.

Whew.

  1. A $250,000 donation. Where is the outrage from the Pawar-bots and 47th Ward Progressives about the influence of big donors in politics?

His answers to Ahearn….kid is not ready for prime time. Also getting called out as a Rahm puppet…ouch!

  2. So if Pres Cullerton decides not to run for re-election, does Pawar run for that State Senate seat instead?

  3. == I tend to work alone. I don’t always build coalitions. ==

Give him points for being honest, but not exactly what we need right now. Particularly given the current governor’s inability to build consensus.

  4. Usually a tipoff that when someone, anyone, says “That’s a great question” or “Love that question” they mean the exact opposite and are stalling to formulate an answer. He kind of dug his own hole there with the “I don’t work well with others” thing and kept right on digging.

  5. What a worthless cornball - he’s reporting sub $150 contributions - which should be just filed under non-itemized - so the big money donors are harder to find because they’re buried between a thousand $20 donors.

    What a joke.

  6. I like Pawar a lot and hope he goes on to do great things, but right now it’s time for him to drop out. $86,000 for a whole quarter shows he is just not a viable candidate.

  7. Truth is…he’s been a pragmatic legislator after learning early on that working with the progressive caucus leads to all hot air and no action. Now he has to pander to that base.

  8. “Heavily dependent on wealthy benefactor”

Doesn’t that also apply to the Guv?

    And the ILGOP?

  9. $21 million dollars self-funded is a fair assessment to what the people are able to afford? Clearly everyone here don’t want things to change.

We have candidates who have no business running for governor other than the money they have in their pockets awarded to them when they were born.

Keep looking at money as a way to vote and you’ll get burned. Unless, of course, you’re bought and paid for, too.

  11. His candidacy was not serious. It was a way to introduce himself to a wider audience. That he accomplished.

  12. I really don’t get how everyone talks about how there’s too much money in politics, and yet ignores the little guy in the race who’s trying to run a positive, issue-based campaign. Pritzker’s pouring his own money into the race and so is Kennedy, though to a lesser degree (remember that $250k self-donation that busted the caps?). And Biss is taking money from the Springfield establishment and his own family. But Pawar get’s one big contribution from a long-time supporter and everyone is quick to call foul. How else is he to stay alive and remain competitive in a race against billionaires and millionaires? Give me a break, Rich. If you’re going to call out Pawar for that donation, you need to do a better job of calling out how the other candidates are doing the same thing.

You must be new here. I do that a lot.

    Also, bite me.

  14. ” And Biss is taking money from the Springfield establishment and his own family. ”

I’ll take a big donation from one wealthy supporter over one from the Madigan Machine any day of the week. Biss was pretty quick to cower to the Schneider & the Israeli lobby; doesn’t bode well for someone claiming they’re ready to take on Madigan.

Right now, they’re all doing a fine job of not getting in Rauner’s way while he beats himself.

Are you saying you think people here think buying office is a good thing?
