*** UPDATED x1 *** Rauner won’t answer bump stock ban questions

Posted in:

* Today

REPORTER: Governor, there’s a bump stock bill that failed yesterday. There’s also a Republican measure that would ban just bump stocks, not modifications. You’re a hunter. Would you support that kind of a measure?

RAUNER: Well, uh, again there are number of regulations and regulatory bills being discussed in the General Assembly. I think, I’m, I encourage the conversation. I look forward to, our team is participating in the conversation. I don’t want to, um, comment prematurely or speculate about legislation, but there’s good conversations going on.

REPORTER: So do you support bump stocks, or do you not support bump stocks?

RAUNER: What I support is a good bipartisan conversation about these issues.

Rauner Dodges on Bump Stocks… Again

Chicago, IL – Bruce Rauner once again dodged questions and refused to take a position on bump stocks, the gun accessory used to take 58 lives earlier this month in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. Just days after the Las Vegas massacre, Rauner was asked about a bump stock ban, and was silent then just as he is now. […]

“In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, Bruce Rauner doesn’t care enough to provide solutions to prevent gun violence and keep Illinoisans safe,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Rauner’s repeated silence is another symptom of his failed leadership and his inability to take any action on pressing issues facing our state.”

*** UPDATE ***  Republican lawmaker uses liberal Democrat’s video to demand GOP governor veto gun-related bill. What a world…

Gov Rauner we need your pledge to #veto infringing the #2A https://t.co/NsRcvPeFur

  1. Can this guy ever give a straight answer?

  2. That facial expression just kills me. He looks lost and so clueless. Mr. deer in the headlights.

    Comment by Flynn's mom Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:34 pm

  3. Rauner “encourages a conversation” that he’s scared to participate in.

He can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, left to his own devices. It’s brutally clear that the Superstars ran the show and propped him up as the front man.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:37 pm

  4. Gee, it isn’t too risky to support a ban on bump stocks, is it?

Comment by Da Big Bad Wolf Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:38 pm

  5. And even though there has been no action in D.C. while everyone just waited for the emotions of the Las Vegas massacre to fade, quite a number of Republicans did say that bump-stocks should be banned. Those who believe they should not are pretty fringe.

But, Rauner doesn’t want to give anyone on the right room to challenge him and another issue to ding him on. In the 2nd week of veto, Dems should lob this one on his desk, sans assault weapons and trigger mods, just to put him on the spot.

Comment by Moe Berg Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:41 pm

  6. Who would want to take part in a conversation with an individual who answers questions like that? It’s no wonder the budget mess took as long as it did to get resolved.

Comment by AC Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:41 pm

  7. If you don’t ask questions in good faith, you don’t get good answers. I support Governor Rauner trying to avoid a sack from the opposing defense here.

Comment by Chris Widger Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:46 pm

  8. The question was simple enough, are you for or against… But Rauner couldn’t respond directly to it. And he’s supposed to be the leader of our state?

  9. ===If you don’t ask questions in good faith, you don’t get good answers. I support Governor Rauner trying to avoid a sack from the opposing defense here.===

LOL… yeah, this is such a gotcha question…

REPORTER: So do you support bump stocks, or do you not support bump stocks?

Every governor and elected official is getting this question. It’s relevant and straight forward. The voters need to know where the governor and elected officials stand.

That’s how serving the people works.

    “Because… questions”

    That’s pathetic - Chris Widger -

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:51 pm

  10. Good conversations are for North Shore cocktail parties. A straight answer on a stance on bump stocks is not that hard given the past weeks. The NRA isn’t going to sing him on that, nor will most of whoever is still Rauner’s base. Grown a backbone.

    Comment by Anon221 Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 1:52 pm

  11. “I think, I’m, I encourage the conversation. I look forward to, our team is participating in the conversation. I don’t want to, um, comment prematurely or speculate…”

Comment by Czechmate Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:06 pm

  15. Nope. “Good faith” means not publishing transcripts with “I think, I’m” and “um.” The battle lines are drawn and people are going to do what they have to do to survive. It’s just incentives.

Comment by Chris Widger Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:10 pm

  16. “Gee, it isn’t too risky to support a ban on bump stocks, is it?” Apparently it was too risky to support the DTA.

For the love of Pete it’s a direct quote.

    Reporters aren’t the Governor’s flacks.

Get better at talking on your feel, Rauner.

Lemme guess, you’re also the person that says…

    “You’re not quoting him directly”

    Ugh.

  20. Mike Madigan, and the bump stocks he controls…

Comment by Nick Name Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:17 pm

  21. I would rather have the word-for-word response which Rauner gave to this relevant question. It’s his own doing to show hesitation and use words such as “I think, I’m” and “um.” The press merely reported it. Don’t you think that a Governor should be a polished speaker?

Comment by Christopher Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:18 pm

  22. “Nope. “Good faith” means not publishing transcripts with “I think, I’m” and “um.”

  23. I know you are so what am I. Word salad. This is a poor excuse for a leader.

Comment by Red Rider Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:24 pm

  24. The correct answer would have been, “I support banning the sale and manufacture of items whose sole purpose is to turn a semi-automatic firearm into an automatic one, or even a produce a simulated-automatic rate of fire”. That would have been consistent with the NRA’s position, and that of 99% of the public’s. The problem is, that would also necessitate the banning of belt loops on trousers, according to those with more familiarity with firearms than myself.

    Comment by Stuntman Bob's Brother Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:26 pm

  25. CW, you’re taking Raunerbot victim complex to a new level.
Quoting Rauner verbatim is now a grievance.

Maybe politics and governing is a little beyond you super-sensitive types.

  27. OMG if u can’t give simple answer on simple bump stocks, if u can’t even agree with NRA in getting rid of — get off field u embarrassing man.

    Comment by Chris P. Bacon Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:35 pm

  28. He needs to figure out a way to rebuild the bridge he burned between Downstate and his campaign. So he hasn’t yet figured out if supporting bump stocks will cause him more problems with them.

Comment by VanillaMan Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:52 pm

  29. So 1.4% bumped the bump stock question?

Comment by Huh? Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 2:57 pm

  30. THis guy went to Dartmouth? I went to Jr College and then a Chicagoland university and I can answer the question better than that. Strikingly similar non-responses from Rauner and Trump on every issue. Sheesh

Comment by Honeybadger Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 3:13 pm

  31. CW - if Rauner was capable of giving a short, strait answer to a simple question, you wouldn’t find the need to go to such strained lengths to make excuses/accusations for the guy who can’t fill the shoes of governorship. You’re working too hard bailing out an empty vessel.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 3:20 pm

  32. “Rauner’s repeated silence is another symptom of his failed leadership and his inability to take any action on pressing issues facing our state.”

Sounds a lot like Speaker Madigan’s refusal to call the bipartisan pension bill that passed the Senate that would address the #1 problem in Illinois, what the Speaker admits is our unsustainable pension system

Comment by Lucky Pierre Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 3:31 pm

  33. BVR: Listen you mooks, unless I get my anti-union stuff I’m just not going to govern- what don’t you people understand?

  34. Lucky Pierre- how does the string on your Madigan Big Board connect gun control to pensions?

Comment by Morty Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 3:32 pm

  35. - Lucky Pierre -

Are you equating bump stocks and pensions?

    That’s your response.

    “Bump stocks… Pensions… Same… ”

    Yikes.

    Started “early” I guess…

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 3:34 pm

  36. Stuntman Bob- “That would have been consistent with the NRA’s position…” NRA sold out on bump stocks about three days or so after the Las Vegas event, which is consistent with their track record (selling out their members, that is).

Despite the widely held myth within trailer parks across America, NRA, Inc. is not a gun rights org, it is a self-perpetuating fundraising org that is focused on gun rights. They don’t ever want to win, just lose a little bit. That’s why Chris Cox at NRA-ILA HQ pays Todd Vandermyde by 1099 as a contract lobbyist: plausible deniability so they can say they had no idea what he’s doing in Illinois.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 27, 17 @ 3:39 pm

  37. “The correct answer would have been, “I support banning the sale and manufacture of items whose SOLE purpose is to turn a semi-automatic firearm into an automatic one………, that would also necessitate the banning of belt loops on trousers, according to those with more familiarity with firearms than myself.”

You do know the meaning of the word “sole”,don’t you?
