Translation: I am too rich to care what anyone else thinks. I have no sense of self-doubt, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that I should.
Comment by Ole' Nelson Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:52 pm
Why would he regret it? He doesn’t want anyone to know he has been crashing and burning IL. He doesn’t want people to know how many people he has hired or what he is doing or how he is doing it.
Comment by Mama Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 2:52 pm
With a slim 3 vote margin, Gov Delusional declares his drubbing as “An Up-Day” and looks forward to more legislation crashing and burning. Now he’s just lining up additional scapegoats to shoulder his continued failed leadership.

360: LOL. The only sincere thing about the man is what a terrible dresser he is. But, who cares about fashion when the only thing that appears to motivate him is the domination of others?
Imagine reaching age 60 and never admitting a mistake. Imagine wanting to support someone with such deficient character.

When Rauner was told he had a one in a million chance of his transparency veto being upheld, he did his best Larry Christmas imitation: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance. Yeah!”
Comment by don the legend Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:14 pm
Well, my grandpa always taught me to bowl 15 frames. It’s like I told you before, we Amish, we do everything half again as hard as you do. Ten frames, ha! That’s for Quakers.

If he said that the defeat made him deeply regret the veto, Rich would write “OK then…” and the comments would be blasting Rauner with a similar tenor. This is a perfect example of how politics is sports and Rauner’s choices don’t particularly matter to anyone here.
Comment by Chris Widger Thursday, Nov 9, 17 @ 3:29 pm
Yeah, he doesn’t look very healthy but photos can often be deceiving. I realize I’m not part of the political wiseguys that populate this page but it grates to see Rauner receive more than his share of the blame for the condition Illinois finds itself in. If this were an accident settlement I have no doubt that there would be shared blame by Rauner and Madigan but that Madigan would be the owner of at least 75% of the blame. I know many will be happy when Rauner is gone but the primary and long term architect of the demise of Illinois will still be around and in control. So good luck to all of us who are still here.

No. Good try. Victimhood becomes you and Rauner.
Me?
I’d be shocked he took ownership, and I’d hope more of the same, in greater hope by taking ownership, Rauner would govern with more of a want to do better.
You have this theme, you’re concerned about Rauner’s victimhood.
The man has put over $100 million of his own dough into this… that’s big-boy money.

Nope. Contrition from a politician is typically viewed positively. Bill Clinton after the ‘94 election comes to mind. It made ‘96 a whole lot easier for him. You don’t defend a fight you lose that badly. You learn from it and you move forward.

• If Rauner behaved otherwise, then
• some people might still dislike Rauner, therefore
• it is illegitimate to dislike Rauner for his behavior?

==You have this theme, you’re concerned about Rauner’s victimhood.==
I think the Governor will be fine, like all politicians will be fine. Certainly, voters have the right to blast him. I just think the veneer of sincerity with which this blog and commentators do such blasting is, well, worth blasting. If there were just a couple of sentences that everyone could copy and paste as each comment–something like “Governor Rauner has positions with which I disagree and has done things I believe are bad for the state, and so I desire for him to lose the election and this particular day’s story does not move the needle either way”–that might save a lot of people a lot of energy.

It’s absolutely legitimate to dislike a politician for her behavior. Let’s just not pretend that Rauner’s choices today mattered or that anyone here is sincerely responding to a story.

The choices of over 2 1/2 years make Rauner who he is.
Is your take… “because popularity”?
Yikes man, governing is about accountability to word, actions, deeds, and choices… no Governor is a passenger…
… except Bruce Rauner. Thus… he gets what he deserves, and in real time.
Keep up.

Seems like governors have been playing with “bills” within departments and agencies for years, without transparency. Rauner views this as a traditional tool for cash management by governor’s, taken away from him by an opponent, and therefore wrong. He must know his veto was politically stupid — so in a perverse way, he has taken an unpopular position of concience.
