Ives is a conservative, which to her means belief in fiscal restraint, limited government, freedom of speech and conscience, rule of law and personal responsibility. She is often called a social conservative, but Ives says she is running for governor as a fiscal conservative.
“It is 100 percent not true that I am all about social issues,” Ives said.
She used taxpayer funding of abortion as an example.
“Taxpayer funding of abortion is a fiscal issue. You don’t start programs when the state is practically bankrupt,” Ives said.
She is also concerned about education funding and was adamantly opposed to the education funding bill that passed.
“We now have made another promise we cannot keep,” Ives said.

“Illinois can do a lot better with the right leadership,” said Ives. “We have a very strong governorship. We happen to have a weak man in office right now.”
Ives’ “grassroots campaign” focuses on what she calls, “Rauner’s lies”. […]
After Ives filed her paperwork Monday, Gov. Rauner called her a “fringe candidate”. She says, he’s the one on the fringe with his policies.
Ives said, “Actually, Rauner’s the fringe governor, quite frankly. He’s the one really extreme. He’s not been moderate on anything.”
Ives also stresses, she’s not a “Chicago politician.” She thinks southern Illinois’ resources provide another key to growing the state’s economy.
“Forty percent of our energy still comes from coal, that’s great,” said Ives. “I’m a proponent of it. We need to invest in our infrastructure to expand our energy resources.”
* She also had an interesting take on Gov. Rauner signing what she calls the “sanctuary state” bill into law…
That’s legislation that the governor signed and he did not have to sign that. So he imposed the agenda of Mike Madigan rather than fighting Mike Madigan.

The Ives attempted tack to social moderate is going to be amazing to watch.
What about all those things you’ve said about gay people? “It’s a fiscal issue! When gays have kids Jesus cries and tanks the S&P 500″.

She wasn’t being dishonest as much as being slyly incomplete. “I’m against abortion because it kills innocent unborn”, is what she also believes but didn’t say it.

Please, some reporter somewhere bring up her views on social issues next time she’s interviewed. She should own up to it. Her comments on the LGBT community especially are repugnant.

Maybe she should read HB40?

So, it will cost $0.10 per person(minus all of the GRF funding). Yeah, that’s some fine fiscal conservatism there.
For reference, that’s about 1/10th what the state spends on the State Fair…
I look forward to Jeanne announcing to downstate residents she wants to cancel the state fair.
She is going to be hilarious to watch circle the drain.

The southern Illinois tour is a great move on her part. If she can win the hearts and minds of the voting population south of 72 she will have a good chance in the primary. The abortion answer was very clever.

She may make the Guv look reasonable, but Ives is also going to make him look weak. I think the negatives from being portrayed as weak (especially with republicans) will outweigh any positives he gets from being viewed as a reasonable moderate.

Every two years we do. Let’s not write off a candidate on their launch day.

Rauner’s GOP base could be in northeast IL, Chicago and the suburbs especially, at least judging from his primary support in ‘14. Dillard and Brady won most of downstate and it still wasn’t enough. How does Ives resonate in the suburbs?

“What’s the difference”. There is a difference, but it’s so trifling, I concede to you description. She should go full bore what she is/believes. She will be mocked. despised, etc., but her small chance at hurting Rauner will be totally erased if she goes equivocal.

Yup. The danger has always been that she makes it a personality contest. Then, it doesn’t matter if he’s putatively more moderate than her.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Rep
Ives in relationship to the Evidence Based Model for funding public education when she says: “We now have made another promise we cannot keep.” The level of cynicism among both Republicans and Democrats in relationship to the hold harmless provisions of the law, and improved staffing ratios, without sufficient tax revenue to support it over the next 10 years is simply stunning. By the way its not just Senator Manar, it was pervasive.
But Rep Ives has no viable approach for k-12 funding either, unless its based on privatization schemes.

You need to get out more.
69% of women oppose taxpayer-funded abortions.
- Marist poll January 2016.
I bet you can locate a few of those female voters if you try.
Even if that figure seems high - how off is it? 20%? Even if it was off that much, it still leaves half the female voting population in opposition.
Don’t claim that the only woman running for governor won’t attract woman voters because she favors life and opposes taxpayer funding of electable abortions. That’s nutty.

I think it’s actually less than that. I believe there really isn’t any cost due to “offset savings” that were overlooked the first time. Odds are this bill actually saves us money in the long run. I’d like to see her explain that.

VMan, I don’t understand how pointing out Ives obviously dishonest claim that she opposes abortion for fiscal reasons is engaging in stereotyping. A stereotype of what?
She was opposed to abortion way before HB40.
And I don’t believe that “moderating” her image will help her in the GOP primary. Quite the contrary. It ain’t 1992 anymore, and it ain’t Jim Edgar’s Illinois GOP.
As I’ve been pointing out a lot lately, Trump and Cruz combined for one million GOP primary votes last year, 70% of the total.

I’m starting to think Ives has a shot if Rauner continues to spoon-feed her killer lines for attack ads. The question is probably whether she has the funds to get those ads running anywhere.
Money aside, it seems that Rauner’s proposed main advantage is that Ives is too socially extreme to be viable. I think ILGOP primary voters probably by and large would prefer a less socially extreme candidate, but I’m less sure that social issues are sufficient to make them pick a candidate they otherwise see as weak, ineffective, and unable to stand up to Madigan. If Ives can make that case effectively, she may have a narrow road to the nomination.
It will be interesting to see what matters more, provided Ives isn’t simply swamped by Rauner’s superior funding.

If taxpayer funded abortions are a fiscal issue, any other procedures Medicaid pays for are also fiscal issues. HB 40 doesn’t provide for specific funds for abortions, rather permits the costs of abortions to be covered by Medicaid just as the costs for nursing home care, broken bones, and any other covered cost. I’m not sure the nuance of this will be realized by the far right, but we should all be cautious when politicians speak of healthcare as a fiscal issue.
This goes for those claiming the abortions will save the state money in the long run, the same could be said for Medicaid covering antibiotics, or appendectomies, we’d save a lot of money on future medical costs if we just let those on Medicaid die of childhood illnesses or curable conditions. It is sad sign of the times when we elevate being fiscally conservative over morality.

The proposal would allow the state to pay for abortions for women who cannot afford them. If those women have children, they are likely to be covered under Medicade or CHIP. They are also likely to fall under WIC. They will need subsidized child care or they will be unemployed or underemployed if they cannot access child care. After that, they will be in subsidized preschool and then K-12. If this is truly a fiscal issue for Ives, allowing low income women to have access to an abortion is the fiscally responsible way to go.

Jeanne Ives doesn’t oppose taxpayer-funded abortions. She only opposes them when the state is practically bankrupt. She told me herself.
But I expect she going to change her position once the economics are explained to her as Pot and others have done above. Supporting HB40 is actually sound fiscal policy.

Good to know. Hopefully some helpful reporter will ask some questions to drill down and find out why Ives now supports legal abortion in cases where Government is not paying for the procedure since she seemed to be pro life until now. /s
